A strong peak was detected around 80 degrees C for E=100 kV/cm, and approximately at 100 degrees C for E=10 kV/cm. It was interpreted to be due to stored space charge thermally released, since the peak always disappeared in a second measurement. However, it was always present when consecutive measurements were carried out accompanied by an inversion of the applied field. It is suggested that the released charge was not swept away but remained trapped at surface traps. These include sensors for the detection of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), road detectors, cable wrapping, etc. The versatility of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) films has also been used in the manufacture of very small and sensitive detectors or detector arrays in such diversified fields as ultrasound sensors for nondestructive testing or medical imaging, infrared array sensors for movement and heat sensing, and force of acceleration detectors. Bimorphs have gained increasing interest recently since the publication of a description of a flat display panel (a giant television screen) using mono-oriented piezoelectric films. Dielectric PVDF films are now also used in Europe; several with qualities that can be used in the capacitor industry are available. The insulating materials have been subjected to alternating voltage (50 Hz) under inhomogeneous field conditions (rod-plate electrode system). Experimental investigations of the effect of specimen thickness on leakage current and flashover voltage have been carried out under bare electrode conditions as well as under coated electrode conditions. It consists of up to 200 special badges, each containing a charged electret film, and a microprocessor-controlled reader unit which calculates the cumulative radiation dose by measuring the surface potential of the electret noninvasively. Equivalent surface voltages, charge centroids, total charges per unit area, and TSC (thermally stimulated current) of samples were determined under different charging temperatures and charging times. From their relationships the authors found several interesting results. For example, under elevated temperatures there are limitations to the depth of charge centroids and maximum of total charge per unit area. The success of these microphones is attributed to their excellent acoustic properties, low cost, mechanical simplicity, and above all the stability of the charge in Teflon even under extreme environmental conditions. The author discusses the No-Voltage Velotron, the application of thick wax electret microphones in Japanese field equipment during World War II, and the development and application of thin piezo- or pyroelectric polymer electrets. Since the commercial success of electroacoustic transducers in the audio frequency range, microphones using thin polymer electrets have been proposed that extend the frequency range from 10/sup -3/ Hz to more than 2*10/sup 8/ Hz for use in solids, liquids, and gases. Most of these electrons are deeply trapped in the polymer; the remaining electrons are excited from shallow traps into conduction levels and are swept out of the polymer. At short times, when most of these shallow-trapped electrons are excited into the conduction levels, the current approaches the space-charge limit: hence a value for electron mobility is obtained. At long times (from about five seconds to thousands of seconds) the conduction process is dominated by the rate of excitation from deeper-lying trapping levels; the excitation of electrons from these traps can be analyzed in terms of a time-dependent demarcation energy that is related to elapsed time. Ohlendorf","doi":"10.1109/ISE.1988.38575","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ISE.1988.38575","url":null,"abstract":"In combination with the fabrication technique and the driving electronics, material parameters determine the static and dynamic director configuration and, therefore, the electrooptical behavior of the surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) display (SSFLC), a promising technique for applications which require video frame rate and high spatial resolution, such as TV and computer monitors. The authors describe another important parameter, which is the type of texture that is induced by the application of AC electric fields. It is shown that the smectic layer structure of the display and thus its texture are irreversibly changed by exceeding a critical AC field amplitude that depends on the frequency, the temperature, and some material properties. When the grid voltage, V/sub g/, which controls the surface potential of the film, is -3 kV, the surface potential profile of the charged sheet is nonuniform. The profile is very uniform when V/sub g/ is only 1 -kV. The average surface potential of the charge sheet is roughly -500 V in both cases if charging time is long enough (e.g. more than 30 min).
