The systems may experience failure due to problems associated with the services such as communication problems and faults within the services themselves. In this paper, we emphasize the importance of fault tolerance mindset during the design of service-based systems and propose a UML profile for fault tolerance patterns which can be used to build a design model for any fault tolerant service-based system. The profile covers fault tolerance patterns at the architecture level and the patterns for error detection and recovery. We present how to use the UML profile to design a fault tolerant version of the supply chain management application, a sample application of the Web Services Interoperability Organization. The paper also reports the impact of fault tolerance design on a number of service quality attributes of this case study application.","PeriodicalId":199516,"journal":{"name":"The 2013 10th International Joint Conference on Computer Science and Software Engineering (JCSSE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130654476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We examined Facebook activities of 98 students, consisting of the groups of class of 4/1, 4/3 and 5/1 of Sa school located in Nan province, Thailand, during the first semester of 2011. We applied both statistics and data mining techniques for data analysis to determine the effects of Facebook usages for education on students' learning skills. Statistics was used to evaluate the correlation between students' Facebook usage and grade point averages, and a data mining technique was used to learn association rules from data. This project has helped us learn the effects of using social media web applications (i.e., Facebook applications) for education on student-learning performance. We found that examining the ratio of number of Facebook posts and comments for educational purposes to the one for non-educational purposes could help us draw a conclusion that Facebook usage does have an impact on students' learning performances. Specifically, we found that students who spent more time on education-related posting and commenting earned better grades than the ones who did the opposite. Furthermore, as we have to group data to change numerical data to nominal data, we found that data grouping play an important role on the number of rules and their associated confidence values. Too loose and too tight data grouping might be the reason the Association Rule algorithm derives few rules with high confidence values. We hope the results can help learners and teachers realize the advantages, disadvantages and effects of using social media web application for education.","PeriodicalId":199516,"journal":{"name":"The 2013 10th International Joint Conference on Computer Science and Software Engineering (JCSSE)","volume":"23 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132737157","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the image larger than the percentage of error correction, embedded in the QR code, could not be read. This research try to increase the size of the embedding image by investigating the change of encoding the pad characters and the adjustment of intensity of light. The largest image size that can be embedded and read through general QR code reader, with different errors correction levels, is found. The results are compared with other research on embedding an image in except the finder patternof QR code and our embedding images size are larger in all the correction levels.","PeriodicalId":199516,"journal":{"name":"The 2013 10th International Joint Conference on Computer Science and Software Engineering (JCSSE)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114686196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, some noises may occur in a scanned image such as marginal noises. The marginal noises usually appear as dark regions around the margin of the scanned documents. In this paper, we propose a method for removing marginal noise by analyzing image histogram or projection profile of the document image. The method consists of the following main steps: Creating image profile; Smoothing the profile by using moving average technique; Dividing the projection profile of the document image into three regions: left, middle, and right; Detecting marginal noises by finding the highest peaks of the projection profile in the corresponding regions; Removing the detected marginal noises by replacing the regions of marginal noises with white pixels. We had performed experiments on 50 input digital document images. The proposed method can detect and remove the marginal noises with a high average accuracy rate of 93.8% which is significantly higher than that of the tradition method, 77.5%, using the original projection profile.","PeriodicalId":199516,"journal":{"name":"The 2013 10th International Joint Conference on Computer Science and Software Engineering (JCSSE)","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124878394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its representation is similar to the radix number system together with two bases, usually be two and three. DBNS preserves the two important properties: redundancy and sparseness. The redundancy is the property accommodating with the parallelism. In this research, we are interested in parallel addition algorithm on DBNS. Our theoretical result shows that parallel addition in DBNS can be performed. An addition algorithm together with the proof of correctness is described in this paper. In generally, we study the generalization form of DBNS addition algorithms in any sizes.","PeriodicalId":199516,"journal":{"name":"The 2013 10th International Joint Conference on Computer Science and Software Engineering (JCSSE)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129951437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In many cases, it is difficult to discern signs of breast cancer because mammograms are low contrast and very noisy. This paper proposes improved contrast enhancement method in mammograms using denoising in wavelet coefficients. First, mammograms are decomposed by wavelet transform. Second, the ratio between approximate subband and detail subband as signal-to-noise ratio is computed. Finally, detail subbands which have the ratio lower than the criteria are boosted to improve mammograms contrast while detail subbands having the ratio higher than the criteria are set to zero for noise suppression in the same time. Contrast measure and peak-signalto-noise ratio are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results show higher contrast 17.05% than the conventional method while a bit different in peak-signal-to-noise ratio.","PeriodicalId":199516,"journal":{"name":"The 2013 10th International Joint Conference on Computer Science and Software Engineering (JCSSE)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121599475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
