This is the \"cluster validity problem\". In this paper, we define G as a measure of the quality of clustering which is based on the mini-max filter concept and fuzzy theory. It measures the overall average compactness and separation of a fuzzy c-partition and explore the properties of G, and we define I/sub G/ as a more suitable measure to compare the clustering result of one fuzzy c/sub 1/-partition with another c/sub 2/-partition of a data set. Concept formation is defined as a machine learning task that captures concepts through categorizing the observation of objects and also uses them in classifying future experiences. A reasonable computational model of concept formation must reflect the characteristics of human concept learning and categorization. In this paper, the design and implementation of a fuzzy-set based concept formation system (FUZZ) is presented. The main feature of the FUZZ is that the concept hierarchy is non-disjoint, in which an instance may belong to two categories in different memberships. An information-theoretic evaluation measure called category binding to direct searches in the FUZZ is proposed. The learning and classification algorithms of the FUZZ are also given. For each fuzzy rule \"If x is A/spl tilde/ then y is B/spl tilde/\", the proposed inference method produces an output fuzzy subset B/spl tilde/' according to the spatial relationship of input fuzzy subset A/spl tilde/' and the antecedent A/spl tilde/. The membership function of the output fuzzy subset B/spl tilde/' is of the same shape as that of the input fuzzy subset A/spl tilde/'. Moreover, the spatial relationship of B/spl tilde/ and B/spl tilde/' is consistent with that of A and A/spl tilde/'. Experiments on a truck backer-parking controller are performed to compare our proposed inference method with E.H. Mamdani's (1981) method. There are many diseases which can be cured much more efficiently with Chinese medicine or combination of Chinese medicine and western medicine than using pure western medicine. However, it takes time to decoct Chinese drugs and, time is money. In modern society, therefore automatic Chinese drugs decocting machines are invented. The machines now available use a censor to predetermine the amount of drugs and do not take the features and water absorbability of raw herbs material into consideration. The accuracy of the amount of the decocted drugs and its efficiency is somewhat limited. Therefore, those automatic drugs decocting machines can only be called as \"fixed amount of drugs boilers\". To improve the efficiency of traditional Chinese herb medicine prepared with auto-machine, a \"Fuzzy Chinese Drugs Decocting Machine\" is presented in this paper. It considers not only the features of raw material but can also control the temperature of decocting and the amount of drugs.
