This dual location raises many questions as to how the nuclear and chi genes which code chl-specific ribonucleic acids and proteins are regulated and coordinated to produce a functioning organelle. Though much remains to be answered, the overall pattern of expression of genes coding chi proteins is becoming clear. This review considers the expression of the genes coding two chi proteins, i.e. the light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b protein which is coded in the nucleus, and the enzyme ribulose-1,5- bisphosphate carboxylase which is composed of two subunits, one of which is coded in the nucleus and the other in the chloroplast. All levels of expression of these genes are considered from their structure and transcription to the final assembly and integration of their functional protein products into the appropriate compartment o...","PeriodicalId":196860,"journal":{"name":"Israel journal of botany","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129799119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under these conditions only 10% of the total chlorophyll was formed compared to cells under continuous light, whereas chlorophyll b remained at the initial trace level. All chlorophyll-protein complexes of the light-harvesting complex were missing, while those related to PSII reaction centers increased. The capacities of PSI and PSII per chlorophyll were higher in cells partially greened under intermittent light than in those under continuous light. Transformation of cells from intermittent to continuous light caused a drastic increase in chlorophylls a and b above the normal level, establishing a chlorophyll a/b ratio and the light-harvesting complex pattern found in wild-type cells.","PeriodicalId":196860,"journal":{"name":"Israel journal of botany","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117052910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The inability to germinate at high temperatures (25 to 40°C) resulted principally from a seed-coat imposed dormancy, whereas poor germination at temperatures below 25 °C was mainly due to an embryo dormancy. Dry storage greatly improved germination at temperatures ranging from 5 to 40°C, by eliminating both the seed-coat imposed and the embryo dormancy. A too high temperature (45°C) always completely inhibited germination and rapidly induced a secondary dormancy which was broken by redrying and dry storage of the seeds. The depth of embryo dormancy varied during the development of the seeds. It was low in very immature embryos, but increased and then decreased during desiccation of the seeds on the mother plants. Ethylene and its immediate precursor (1-aminocyclopropane-l-car- boxylic acid) strongly stimulated germination of primary dormant seeds. On the contrary, inhibitors of e...","PeriodicalId":196860,"journal":{"name":"Israel journal of botany","volume":"332 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120837797","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ethylene production in water-stressed leaves increased significantly reaching a peak 4 h after termination of the stress treatment and decreased rapidly to control level thereafter. The enhancement in ethylene production was the result of an increase both in the synthesis of 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid (ACC) and in the activity of ethylene-forming enzyme (EFE). The increase in ACC level peaked 2 h after termination of the stress treatment, whereas EFE activity increased gradually with time. Pretreatment with abscisic acid (ABA) had no effect on ethylene production in whole detached leaves subjected to water stress. In water-stressed leaf discs, ABA pretreatment stimulated ethylene production. Norbornadiene, a competitive inhibitor of ethylene, enhanced the ethylene production rate in water-stressed leaves and del...","PeriodicalId":196860,"journal":{"name":"Israel journal of botany","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124567645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under field conditions secondary dormancy is part of cyclic changes in the level of dormancy that often follow a seasonal pattern. It develops when germination is inhibited, e.g. by burial in soil. Temperature, absence of light or oxygen, presence of volatile or allelopathic inhibitors and moisture conditions are among the factors which may contribute to inhibition of germination and thus to development of dormancy. Decreasing light sensitivity is part of the development of secondary dormancy. It is partly attributed to photo- or dark-reversion of the far-red absorbing form of phytochrome (Pfr), pre-existing in the seeds or newly formed, to Pr. Changing levels of Pfr at its primary site of action, possibly being a membrane, are also held responsible for the decreasing light-sensitivity. Secondary dormancy is not related to a deterioration of the seeds. A specific relationship with any particular metabol...","PeriodicalId":196860,"journal":{"name":"Israel journal of botany","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121394262","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They attract hymenopteran males who attempt to copulate with the labellum searching for females. During this “pseudocopulation,” the insects perform pollination. As this relation is highly specific, the pollinators serve as prepollinating isolation factors. This is illustrated by many examples. We consider it evident that specific pollinators have a strong selective effect on Ophrys flowers. By comparing the characters of the Ophrys flowers and of their pollinators, we try to bring an indirect proof of this hypothesis1. As a pollinator usually acts as a prepollinating isolation mechanism, speciation in Ophrys is always a consequence of a change in pollinator. We discuss some ideas about how speciation in Ophrys might have occurred and how the attraction and pollination modality of pseudocopulation developed during evolution.","PeriodicalId":196860,"journal":{"name":"Israel journal of botany","volume":"26 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122566323","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The delivery rate of distillation is extremely important to plants. A range of soil temperatures of 10° with a 0–3 cm soil maximum of 36–40° is essential to provide the energy for distillation and condensation of significant quantities of water. All three species appear to be able to absorb water into the parenchyma of their leaves after rain or on exposure to high humidity, but dew and conditions of high aerial moisture are rare in this desert. It is difficult to establish whether aerial water is actually usable by plants. The transpiration rate does appear to increase during the periods of highest moisture content and active growth (March-early June), Larrea leaves had consi...","PeriodicalId":196860,"journal":{"name":"Israel journal of botany","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132617792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
