Cheraskin","doi":"10.1097/00006534-198211000-00093","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1097/00006534-198211000-00093","url":null,"abstract":"Clinical studies provide evidence that wound healing in subjects judged not deficient in vitamin C can be significantly accelerated with supplements of this nutrient above the recommended daily allowance (RDA). The authors administered daily dosages of 500 to 3,000 mg., which is roughly 8 to 50 times the RDA of 60 mg., to subjects recovering from surgery, other injuries, decubital ulcers, and leg ulcers induced by hemolytic anemia. Genetic impairment of collagen synthesis has also been observed to be responsive to ascorbic acid supplementation in an 8-year-old boy with Type VI Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Four grams of ascorbic acid daily produced a significant improvement in the quality of newly synthesized collagen but did not alter that formed prior to the supplementation of C. The importance of this syndrome is the development of intestinal polyposis which become malignant. The most common location was the gingiva and alveolar mucosa, followed by the buccal mucosa. Histologically, the amalgam was present in the tissues as discrete, fine, dark granules and as irregular solid fragments. The dark granules were arranged mainly along collagen bundles and around blood vessels. They were also associated with the walls of blood vessels, nerve sheaths, elastic fibers, basement membranes of mucosal epithelium, striated muscle fibers, and acini of minor salivary glands. Dark granules were also present intracellularly within macrophages, multinucleated giant cells, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts. Although in 45% of the cases there was no tissue reaction to the amalgam, in 17% there was a macrophagic reaction and in 38% there was a chronic inflammatory response, usually in the form of a foreign body granuloma, with multinucleated giant cells of the foreign body and Langhans types. A battery of tests, including word memory, Seguin form board, digit symbol, digit span, block design, and reaction time, was administered at set intervals to both drug and nondrug subjects. The diazepam group demonstrated both psychomotor and anterograde memory deficits which persisted throughout the 150-minute evaluation; but relative to the control group, the diazepam group had enhanced retrograde memory. The average age of the patients at the time of treatment was 55 years; all four patients were women. Three of the lesions originated in the mandible, and one in the maxilla. Follow-up studies revealed no recurrences.
