While Bluetooth is first and foremost a replacement for local communication wiring, it also enables many new applications. The Bluetooth technology is quite complex because it is mainly based on the IEEE 802.11 standard and uses the ad-hoc mode. We propose a general simplification to the Bluetooth Protocol and Bluetooth radio devices with a tradeoff between complexity and functionality. First, a separation between master and slave device is proposed. In the standard Bluetooth specification, there is no difference between Bluetooth radio units; that is, all units are identical and any unit can become a master of a piconet. But, it is not necessary for many devices such as headsets to be masters, which can only increase the cost and complexity. Second, the number of packet types can be reduced. The Bluetooth system uses packet-based transmission and defines sixteen different payload types and three types of packet lengths. These can be reduced. Third, the security elements can be eliminated in some Bluetooth devices. There are many services such as advertisement release, which do not need security. Fourth, an active mode and one sleep mode are enough for power management. In the standard there are active mode, idle mode, PARK mode and SNIFF mode, which increase the complexity of the design. Fifth, the capability of communications in the scatternet is not necessary in many Bluetooth devices and can be eliminated. Lastly, many sophisticated options can be replaced by simple mechanisms. For instance, intelligent scheduling algorithms in the master can be approximated by first-come-first-serve (FIFO) queues; link-adaptive packet length can be replaced by constant packet length, etc.","PeriodicalId":196700,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2002 IEEE 4th International Workshop on Networked Appliances (Cat. Guruprasad","doi":"10.1109/IWNA.2001.980848","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/IWNA.2001.980848","url":null,"abstract":"The article presents an operating system for the Internet (OSIx) incorporating notions that appears to be simpler, faster, more scalable and flexible, and provides an infinite effective address (EA), potentially avoiding migration issues, essentially due to a strict principle of localisation. The name space is obtained by linking local directories in a hierarchy using TCP and RTSP (RFC2326) and is made into a global autonomous EA space by interpreting name strings in a filesystem-like fashion, going both up and down the tree. Performance stems from limiting non-leaf lookups to relatively small route tables at each hop and reaching leaves in at most O(log n) hops, closely resembling the interpretation of addresses in IP routing, so that register, reference and discard cycles can be executed at subsecond speeds. A prototype, implemented as a Spring'01 MS project, demonstrated interoperability with IP and DNS by supporting (secure) inbound TCP (talk) and ICMP (ping) using the loopback address range for IP VA.","PeriodicalId":196700,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings 2002 IEEE 4th International Workshop on Networked Appliances (Cat. In the future we would expect this to include smart appliances, digital TV, Web tablets, etc. The configuration requirements become increasingly complex as broadband home network users start to appreciate the power of their connectivity and want to configure additional services such as remote corporate network access (VPN), personal Web server hosting, MP3-file sharing, and multi-player (on-line) gaming. The Bluetooth/sup TM/ wireless technology was designed to be a cable replacement, but is being pushed to be much more. The Bluetooth /sup TM/ wireless technology consists of two base documents and numerous others, including at least one on testing. The primary is the core specification. The secondary is the profile specification. The core specification can be broken down into three major parts. The first is the part that contains the lower layer protocols. These lower layer protocols provide the wireless interface, the data link functions, and networking. The higher layer protocols provide the application specific items. The host controller interface (HCI) provides a defined interface for linking these other two major parts. In the context of home networks, we identify. two management tasks that we consider critical: (a) fault management; and (b) maintenance management. Fault management involves the task of detecting, isolating and rectifying faults in the network. These faults could either occur in the communicating medium such as an IEEE 1394b cable or in any of the devices or their components. Maintenance management involves tasks such as the collection,. monitoring and analysis of performance and other data pertaining to the devices and other network elements.
