There are several existing works which present such systems by using different approaches. Using alternative solutions to provide a service or requirement is one of the most important approaches among existing works. In this paper an alternative-based approach for adding self-adaptive capabilities to software systems is proposed. In this approach a group of autonomic elements will be constructed based on different design or implementations that could be considered for a specific service or requirement. By using this approach, a highly adaptive software system could be built based on autonomic elements, so that it needs much less memory and processing resources in comparison to similar existing works.","PeriodicalId":196497,"journal":{"name":"2010 Seventh IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114245234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"A State Machine-Based Approach for Reliable Adaptive Distributed Systems","authors":"L. Mostarda, Daniel Sykes, Naranker Dulay","doi":"10.1109/EASE.2010.19","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/EASE.2010.19","url":null,"abstract":"Adaptive systems are often composed of distributed components that co-operate in order to achieve a global behaviour, and yet many approaches for adaptive systems are centralised or make strong assumptions about the distributed aspects of the problem. However, if insufficient attention is paid to the problem of decentralisation, especially in the difficult and unpredictable environments in which adaptive systems are commonly deployed, it can introduce inefficiencies, and even cause catastrophic failure. An adaptive system is either required to implement subtle synchronisation and consensus protocols or accept certain types of failure from which the system cannot recover. A major goal of our research is to facilitate the development of adaptive, reliable and distributed applications. We provide a framework in which a state machine language is used to define logically centralised behaviour. This is automatically translated into a reliable and efficient distributed implementation that enforces the correct co-ordination in the presence of unpredictable failures.","PeriodicalId":196497,"journal":{"name":"2010 Seventh IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114324718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pervasive Networks by nature consist of devices that are computationally simple, typically utilize wireless comms and are not tethered to wired power sources. As such they would highly benefit from cooperative self-management to make the most of their limited resources while at the same time this autonomicity in-its-self needs to be lightweight. Promising work in the area is highlighted, that once combined, generalized and standardized should provide the promise of an Autonomic Pervasive Networks.","PeriodicalId":196497,"journal":{"name":"2010 Seventh IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115730494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems need a reconfiguration mechanism that provides recovery from individual component failures as well as the ability to dynamically adapt to evolving mission goals. One way to provide this functionality is to define a model of alternative system configurations and allow the system to choose the current configuration based on its current state, including environmental parameters and goals. The primary difficulties with this approach are (1) the state space of configurations can grow very large, which can make explicit enumeration infeasible, and (2) the component failures and evolving system goals must be somehow encoded in the system configuration model. This paper describes an online reconfiguration method based on model-based design-space exploration. We symbolically encode the set of valid system configurations and assert the current system state and goals as symbolic constraints. Our initial work indicates that this method scales and is capable of providing effective online dynamic reconfiguration.","PeriodicalId":196497,"journal":{"name":"2010 Seventh IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117283496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system management aims to optimize the provider's defined objectives, while satisfying the given system and customers constraints. On one hand, the increasing economical, technological, social and environmental changes in our world make the management of urban services to be a great challenge. On the other hand, new technologies provide efficient tools in order to obtain accurate information from various sensors or captors leading to targeted service delivery based on localized factors. Within this paper, we propose a descriptive model to deal with land-use development, based on a three level system in which the environment is an active level interacting with users and services. The three levels are represented in a form of a network of networks consisting of active nodes in dynamic system context. This descriptive model helps in isolating the decision making in a distributed autonomous fashion. Bio-inspired Swarm Intelligence techniques are utilized to realise this objective. The integration between environment sensing, services information handling and planning is a key and difficult part within this research.","PeriodicalId":196497,"journal":{"name":"2010 Seventh IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131283647","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sophistication of robots is increasing while their cost is decreasing in comparison to human controllers. Because of this, not only are robots and spacecraft being given more autonomy, but concepts for multiple robots and spacecraft to work together to perform exploration are being developed. Autonomy alone though, absent autonomicity, will leave spacecraft and other systems vulnerable to the harsh environment in which they work and most likely performance will degrade, the system destroyed or it will not be able to recover from faults. We are working on the development of collaborative autonomic intelligent associates to support the needs of manned and unmanned systems for exploration and other applications. Associate systems are useful in domains with large volumes of data, complex array of actions, critical response times, and limited number of experts available, all of which apply to space exploration missions. This paper describes a high level collaborative associate architecture and gives an overview of the use of concept graphs for modeling, plan goal graphs for planning, and context situated scripts for execution of collaborative associates.","PeriodicalId":196497,"journal":{"name":"2010 Seventh IEEE International Conference and Workshops on Engineering of Autonomic and Autonomous Systems","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131996630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
