To indicate the relevance of the arguments portrayed through this reading of the novels, it draws on a range of critical works written by Mapuche and Chilean intellectuals. As demonstrated, their work is concerned with the place, or lack thereof, of the Mapuche people and culture in the period contemporary to when Valdivieso and Frías are writing.","PeriodicalId":196128,"journal":{"name":"Colonial Legacies and Contemporary Identities in Chile","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132182290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is argued that by creating such narratives, the authors construct what Homi K. Bhabha denotes as a ‘third space’ which facilitates hybridity, destablising fixed notions of identities that the patriarchal and colonial hierarchies seek to perpetuate. This is complemented by a discussion of the power dynamics in the colonial society that are simultaneously undermined and reinforced through the use and perceived prestige of languages.","PeriodicalId":196128,"journal":{"name":"Colonial Legacies and Contemporary Identities in Chile","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130181229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It brings the discussion forward to the time in which this book is written, seventeen years after the publication of the most recent novel studied here. It demonstrates where and how some of the discussions started at the turn of the twenty-first century are still relevant and suggests new avenues for further research in this area.","PeriodicalId":196128,"journal":{"name":"Colonial Legacies and Contemporary Identities in Chile","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116073231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
