A field survey is conducted covering 39 farms, including all crops. A random stratified sampling method is used to collect the data. The results showed that farmer pays for groundwater between 0.13 to 0.41 SR/M3. The study concluded that lifting the governmental subsidies on diesel will stop the cultivation of wheat and Rhodes and will affect the cultivation of Alfalfa. However, vegetable and date crops will be less affected due to their high profit.","PeriodicalId":195574,"journal":{"name":"journal of King Abdulaziz University - Meteorology, Environment and Arid Land Agriculture Sciences","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132476597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Quality attributes, antioxidant compounds, free radical scavenging capacity (FRSC, DPPH IC50 value) and enzymes activities of ‘Grand Nain’bananas were investigated during shelf life at 20±2oC and 60-70% RH for 7 days. Weight loss, peel color and browning indices increased while, pulp firmness, titratable acidity (TA), pH and membrane stability index (MSI) decreased during shelf life. Total soluble solid (TSS) concentration increased up to day five then remained stable whereas, vitamin C increased ranged from 5.8 to 8.2 mg 100g-1 fresh weight (FW) during the first two days and then decreased. Total phenols concentration in both peel and pulp increased ranged from 0.19 to 1.64 gkg-1 and 0.17 to 0.59 gkg-1 FW, respectively during shelf life. Total flavonoids firstly increased, remained stable until day five then, decreased in both peel and pulp. It ranged from 0.05 to 0.21 gkg-1 FW and 0.03 to 0.19 gkg-1 FW in peel and pulp, respectively. Both total phenols and flavonoids concentrations were higher in peel than pulp. FRSC in peel remained stable until day five then, sharply decreased (higher DPPH IC50 values) and ranged from 3.83 to 19.43 IC50 values. While, in pulp it decreased (higher DPPH IC50 values) during shelf life and ranged from 4.1 to 13.3 IC50 values. Polyphenoloxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), polygalacturornase (PG), xylanase and ?-amylase activities in peel and pulp greatly varied during shelf life.","PeriodicalId":195574,"journal":{"name":"journal of King Abdulaziz University - Meteorology, Environment and Arid Land Agriculture Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133067222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Alshallash","doi":"10.4197/met.28-1.3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4197/met.28-1.3","url":null,"abstract":"In four glasshouse experiments, the effectiveness of the adult green dock beetle Gastrophysa viridula (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), at the effective number of applied individuals, for use as a biological control agent of curled dock, Rumex crispus (Polygonaceae) were studied. The feeding of the beetle was investigated at four different numbers of beetle (0, 1, 2, 3) and at four seedling growth stages of the plant, defined by the average of leaf area per plant (1-1.22 , 2-4.45, 3-11.56, and 4-71.52 cm2/plant). Grazing by one, two or three dock beetles did not result in a significant reduction in dock dry weight or shoot numbers at the youngest growth stage. However, both at later seedling growth stages were significantly affected (P ? 0.0001), at any beetles number. The increase of beetle numbers caused nonsignificant increased effect, in some trials, confirming the impact of a single beetle. Three months after beetle grazing, dock seedlings of first, second and third growth stages were not able to regrow, however, some plants at the 4th growth stage, re-emerged. This suggested that the highest effect of beetle's feeding occurs on the early seedling stages. Statistical analysis showed a positive correlation (0.77) between dry weight and shoot number at all the four seedling growth stages, thus confirming the impact of the beetle on both the dry weight and shoot numbers. Combining beetle grazing with other control methods at older dock seedling stages could, therefore, provide better suppression","PeriodicalId":195574,"journal":{"name":"journal of King Abdulaziz University - Meteorology, Environment and Arid Land Agriculture Sciences","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133575687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Investigations of begomviruses in four vegetable crops namely cucumber, squash, tomato, and watermelon were conducted by visual symptoms and molecular analysis using PCR with universal primers for begomoviruses. Obtained sequencing results of the core Coat Protein confirmed the presence of three already reported begomoviral species. TYLCV was detected on tomato samples exhibiting leaf curling and yellowing. Squash and greenhouse-grown cucumber plants were infected with the Oman strain TYLCV-OM. Watermelon chlorotic stunt virus (WmCSV) isolates were detected in watermelon and greenhouse cucumbers. The begomoviral species ToLCPMV shared 99% identity with the Iranian isolates that are known to be very destructive. Integrated pest management should be implemented against whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) to prevent the spread of begomoviruses on vegetable crops.","PeriodicalId":195574,"journal":{"name":"journal of King Abdulaziz University - Meteorology, Environment and Arid Land Agriculture Sciences","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132747085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
