We analyze essential differences between the coordination support needed by these sessions when compared with the conventional coordination activity within workflow systems. Then we propose a flexible support model, which is more adequate for group-oriented collaborative work tasks developed in the context of a more complex workgroup activity. The support is concerned with a set of adaptable mechanisms as well as system base components and services provided by an integrated, open and extensible support platform. These components implement a set of facilities for coordination and awareness control in the context of collaboration sessions.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. This paper first analyses the factors necessary to stimulate industrial competitiveness through electronic commerce, and then discusses interoperability with a view towards open, transparent and competitive solutions. It presents a reference model for open electronic commerce and discusses attempts to define the necessary building blocks from both technical and business perspective. Finally, it proposes a methodology (Industrial Sectoral Interoperability Methodology-ISIM) which is based upon consensus-building standardized solutions developed in a collaborative manner and open to competition, and elements of which are being implemented in Europe giving some promising results for future developments.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. To support these activities we propose to integrate machine learning and workflow management. This enables an inductive approach to workflow acquisition and adaptation by processing traces of manually enacted workflows. We present a machine learning component that combines two different machine learning algorithms. In this paper we focus mainly on the first one, which induces the structure of the workflow, based on the induction of hidden markov models. The second algorithm, a standard decision rule induction algorithm, induces transition conditions. The main concepts have been implemented in a prototype, which we have validated using artificial process traces. The induced workflow models can be imported by the business process management system ADONIS.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. The system and its method of tagging and disambiguation is briefly described as well. Further, we deal with the tagset used in the annotation of DESAM and explain the way in which the tagset is structured to cope with a highly inflectional language such as Czech. We mention the tools used for its management, particularly a corpus query processor CQP. The main attention is paid to the examination of the relations between the size of the DESAM tagset and measures of ambiguity observed for particular tags. Also the reliability of tagging with regard to the inventory of tags is explored. Some considerations based on statistical techniques of disambiguation are presented.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. Calculus queries specify what the user wishes to ask, but do not tell the system how to compute this. In contrast, the relational algebra specifies a query, together with an operational way of executing the query. Queries expressed in the declarative calculus are executed by converting the query to an algebraic query, and then optimized. The article covers two types of database-databases of multimedia objects, and databases of (possibly interactive) multimedia presentations. It shows how, for each of these types of database, we may: (i) build a query calculus, (ii) build a query algebra, and (iii) link up the two through equivalence results that may be used for optimizing queries.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. We then seek to identify areas in which VV&I solutions for database technology can be beneficial to the expert systems community, and vice versa. In general the areas prove to be disjoint. However, we do identify a role for AI in integrity maintenance for large inscrutable objects, e.g., media objects, and for querying incomplete and uncertain information. We conclude that there is also a role for expert systems to support non-expert database designers and users.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. This is mainly due to the fact that mobile code has matured enough to provide Internet users with high quality applications that can be executed remotely. When a user downloads and executes code from various Internet sources, security issues arise. We address the latter and we present a comparative evaluation of the methods used by Java, Safe-Tcl and ActiveX in order to confront these issues, based on current security functions and implementations as well as on future adjustments and extensions.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. For some applications, it is necessary to bound the proportion of misclassified objects. This is clearly an integrity problem. We describe a new integrity constraint for database systems with embedded neural networks, with which Database Administrator can enforce a bound on the proportion of misclassifications in a class. The approach is based upon mapping probabilities generated by a probablistic neural network to the likely percentage of misclassifications.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat. Current research efforts are focused on inventing efficient ways of discovering these rules from large databases. As databases grow, the discovered rules need to be verified and new rules need to be added to the knowledge base. Since mining afresh every time the database grows is inefficient, algorithms for incremental mining are being investigated. Their primary aim is to avoid or minimize scans of the older database by using the intermediate data constructed during the earlier mining. We present one such algorithm. We make use of large and candidate itemsets and their counts in the older database, and scan the increment to find which rules continue to prevail and which ones fail in the merged database. We are also able to find new rules for the incremental and updated database. The algorithm is adaptive in nature, as it infers the nature of the increment and avoids altogether if possible, multiple scans of the incremental database. Another salient feature is that it does not need multiple scans of the older database. We also indicate some results on its performance against synthetic data.","PeriodicalId":194923,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Ninth International Workshop on Database and Expert Systems Applications (Cat.
