It will provide charged hadron identification over a 2–20 GeV/c momentum range, given a 9.5 m flight distance from the LHC interaction point. To achieve this level of performance, a 15 ps timing resolution per track is required. A TORCH prototype module having a 1250×660×10 mm3 fused-silica radiator plate and equipped with two MCP-PMTs has been tested in a 8 GeV/c CERN test-beam. Single-photon time resolutions of between 70–100 ps have been achieved, dependent on the beam position in the radiator. This property is exploited in muon radiography, also known as muography, a technique which allows to highlight the presence of discontinuities of the mass density in the subsoil such as cavities, tunnels or rock masses. A detector of cylindrical geometry, optimized for borehole studies and with a diameter of 24 cm, was developed and tested . The scintillation light is read out by 384 Silicon Photomultipliers, directly coupled to the bars. The front-end and acquisition electronics, entirely housed inside the detector, are based on the EASIROC chip and are characterized by limited energy consumption (about 30 W for the entire detector). The detector has been designed in such a way as to simplify its construction as much as possible for its eventual mass production. The aim is to create a bubble chamber-like high-granularity stack of hundreds of very thin monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS) glued together. In this paper, the R&D to develop the first prototypes with ALPIDE sensors, designed for the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC, will be presented. Tracking and vertexing algorithms were developed to reconstruct tracks and vertices inside Pixel Chamber. They were tested on Monte Carlo simulations which show that it is possible to obtain a high efficiency for the reconstruction of hadronic tracks, and for the primary and secondary vertices inside the detector. The tracking algorithm has been tested on test beam data to reconstruct long tracks produced in a single ALPIDE sensor parallel to a beam. Results show that it is possible to obtain very good performances in long track reconstruction on a single ALPIDE. Among the possible applications, Pixel Chamber used as an active target, has the potential to allow precision measurements of charm and beauty production. Even more interesting are possible medical and astrophysical applications.
