Autonomy researchers argue that only the agent’s own experience can model their behavior. In this regard, the Constitutive Autonomy through Self-programming Hypothesis (CASH) is an effective approach to implement this model. In this paper, we contribute to the discussion of CASH within dynamic and continuous environments by developing mechanisms of memory decay, contradiction penalty, and relative valence. Such improvements aim to see how the agent might continuously reevaluate their learned schemas. The results show that our agents were able to develop autonomously into performing plausible behaviors, despite the changing environment.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129964115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The interaction with the applications stimulates the patient to exercise the impaired limb while enjoying the experience. This work takes the real-time tracking data generated from optical and wearable motion capture devices and uses it to feed machine learning algorithms. The data processing makes the movements with different durations consistent and enables the convergence of the models. Also, the data format is independent of the camera position and user. One of the experiments presented recognizes eight movements being executed in the system.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125420649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work aims to obtain evidence of theoretical and technological aspects of iL from the Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality (SVR) publications. A Systematic Literature Mapping protocol was developed and executed in order to select the primary studies to perform the analysis and data extraction. 76 primary studies helped to answer the research questions. A large part of the contributions by the SVR community are virtual environments that support education in the health area. In addition, some gaps and research opportunities were identified: virtual environments that serve audiences with special needs; development frameworks that consider pedagogical aspects and the use of biometric measures to support the validation of improved learning outcomes.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123405554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These applications provide the benefits of traditional rehabilitation without becoming tiresome. Furthermore, the way the users interact with these applications makes it possible to retrieve and analyze the data generated by their movements during treatment. However, it is hard to find datasets of body movements, and those available do not include specific movements in the rehabilitation context. We present a development framework for virtual and augmented reality applications to support neuromotor rehabilitation.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125741333","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dexterity training, fine movement control and focus may be exploited through a VR simulation, aiming at creating an attractive environment. Such environments may capture the user attention, keeping him/her motivated. With those goals set, a virtual environment was designed which, through playful activities, aims at contributing with the rehabilitation process. In order to provide proprioception and neuroplasticity, the system uses a Phantom Omni (aka Geomagic Touch) and Oculus Rift, to provide immersion and touch feedback. The system uses that setup to enable patients to exercise limbs that were damaged, to acquire full rehabilitation. We perform a usability test, which allow a comparison of an immersive and non-immersive setup.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114987571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Medical applications are particularly strategical, due to the nature of related therapy and training. This work introduces a serious game aimed at exploring some characteristics of the human sight, exploiting them in VR headsets to improve the user lazy eye. Such exploitation is carried out through adjustments made in the luminance of some visual elements of the scene, as presented to each eye. This setup forces the lazy eye to act upon imagery which gains reduced quality in the normal eye. The goal is to force the lazy eye to work, while also exercising binocular image fusion. In order to achieve such goal, we define and apply a multilevel dynamic calibration. That is the major contribution of this work, namely a novel adjustment method that renders graphic elements shown to each eye, to force the lazy eye to work more intensely than the user normal eye. The game’s goal is to provide a tool that can be used by ophthalmologists that need to catch the attention of young kids, while in the age in which they need to exercise a lazy eye, in order to revert its lazy status. The game has been evaluated by related professional, being considered useful.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127550085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three categories of stimuli have been modeled and implemented: (1) Foveal, in which all the virtual environment targets, one by one, are areas of interest of the patient's point of view; (2) Retinal, in which the entire user's visual field is stimulated, without a particular target; and (3) Visuo-vestibular Integration, where several stimuli are available to the patient during the navigation (followed by head movements) and exploratory view through the virtual environments wearing HMD glasses, while standing up on a USB balance scale which was built with a custom hardware solution. Moreover, functional and usability testing with specialists were done to validate in pilot studies the platform effectiveness in balance disorders diagnosis and therapies for vestibular rehabilitation.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114535704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their operating principles have elements that could be used in the development of numerous autonomous technologies, with applications in education and industry. This class of robots usually represent the first contact students have with educational robotics, being used to develop students' logic thinking and programming skills. The cost of robotic platforms is still prohibitive in low-budget schools and universities, which makes almost impossible having a platform for each small group of students in a classroom, harming the learning process. This work proposes a 3D web-based open-source simulator for Pololu's 3Pi line-following robots, making such technology more accessible and available even for distance learning courses. The developed software simulates the robot's physical structure, behavior, and operations – as being able to read surfaces –, enabling the user to observe the robot following the line as the code commands. The simulator was validated based on experiments that included motion analysis and time measurements of pre-stablished tasks so that its execution could be more coherently based on what happens in reality.","PeriodicalId":193769,"journal":{"name":"Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Reality","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115755762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
