The highly negatively charged PEMAc increased the sparse negative charge density on untreated fibers, enhancing PAE adsorption. The adsorption isotherm analysis provided estimates of adsorbed PAE on exterior fiber surfaces, Γ<sub>ex</sub>, as well as the ideality index, <i>IX</i>, a new measure of isotherm ideality. <i>IX</i> increases when grafting lowers the access of adsorbing polymer to interior surfaces, whereas <i>IX</i> decreases when grafting enhances the adsorption capacity of interior surfaces. A library of 18 adsorption isotherms compares PAE and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) adsorption on unmodified pulps, grafted pulps, and TEMPO-oxidized pulps. The grafted pulps include PEMAc polymers modified with pendent short alkyl or poly(ethylene glycol) chains. A grafted PEMAc content of 4.1 mg PEMAc per g of dry fiber tripled the amount of adsorbed PAE on exterior fiber surfaces. About two anionic PEMAc carboxylic acid groups were required for every adsorbed PAE cationic charge. Modification of the PEMAc with pendent chains had little effect. TEMPO oxidation, at the same total fiber charge content, had no positive impact on PAE adsorption.</p>","PeriodicalId":19315,"journal":{"name":"Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal","volume":"41 1","pages":"139-150"},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2025-10-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12912036/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"146220660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, we present a mycelium-based paper developed via alkaline deacetylation of fungal mycelial fibers to chitosan, followed by vacuum filtration, and reinforcement with long plant fibers to enhance mechanical performance. The resulting mycelium–paper composite exhibits a highly dense structure, with very low air permeability (0.42 mL/min), tensile strength of approximately 14 MPa, and tear resistance up to 1,384 mN. In filtration tests, a single pass of 30 mg/L Cu 2+ solution yielded a removal efficiency of 98 %, corresponding to an adsorption capacity of 8.75 mg/g; for methylene blue dye, the adsorption capacity was 7.42 mg/g. Compared to conventional cellulose-based powder adsorbents, which often suffer from material loss and require post-treatment, the mycelial paper can be formed directly into membrane-like filters, simplifying handling. Furthermore, this mycelial membrane displayed strong adsorption across various heavy metal ions and dyes, underscoring its significant potential for sustainable water purification.","PeriodicalId":19315,"journal":{"name":"Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal","volume":"40 4","pages":"713-725"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-09-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147881479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, different from direct addition with poor combination concerning the negative charge in recycled pulp fibers, bamboo fibers were firstly modified with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC) to get cationic bamboo fibers, the characterizations by FTIR and N contents (maximum 1.05 %) classified that the hydroxyl groups in bamboo fibers were etherified effectively with greater zeta potentials (maximum −13.2 mV) in mixed pulps. The cationic modification of bamboo fibers resulted in a significant increase in the tensile and burst index of the secondary pulp, by 49.75 % and 61.54 % with only 10 %addition, respectively, as compared to the unmodified bamboo fibers, which was contributed to the mutual attraction between positively charged modified bamboo fibers and negatively charged secondary fibers, besides the original hydrogen bonding inside fibers, which leads to the enhancements for secondary fibers strength. These findings provide valuable insights into the effective applications of bamboo fibers for reinforcing recycled paper and offer promising solutions for the sustainable development of the paper industry.","PeriodicalId":19315,"journal":{"name":"Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal","volume":"40 4","pages":"657-665"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-08-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147892736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At present, it is recognized that deacidification is an effective means to solve the problem. In this work, aiming at the problems of the traditional single deacidification agent, such as uncontrollable alkali strength, insufficient alkaline reserve, uneven deacidification effect, and high local alkalinity, MgO/CaCO 3 nanocomposites were prepared as a new paper deacidification agent. The composites combined the immediate and efficient deacidification of MgO and the long-term mild deacidification of CaCO 3 . The morphologies and structures of MgO/CaCO 3 nanocomposites were characterized by TEM and XRD. When applied to the deacidification of paper documents, the MgO/CaCO 3 nanocomposites showed excellent deacidification performances and high alkaline reserve. The alkali strength of the MgO/CaCO 3 nanocomposites can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of MgO to CaCO 3 so that the pH value and alkaline reserve of the paper after deacidification are within a reasonable range.","PeriodicalId":19315,"journal":{"name":"Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal","volume":"40 3","pages":"551-557"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147892013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we aimed to enhance lignin’s compatibility with PBAT for polymerization. Epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) was introduced as an interfacial modifier to improve lignin-PBAT interactions. A lignin/ESO/PBAT composite film was fabricated via a solvent-free one-pot method using torque rheometry. ESO formed dynamic covalent bonds between lignin and PBAT, promoting lignin dispersion. When 5 wt% ESO was added to PBAT/lignin composites (1 % lignin), tensile strength increased to 24.57 MPa (from 24.37 MPa) and strain to 956.12 % (from 922.41 %). Antibacterial assays and food freshness tests confirmed the composite’s suitability for food packaging. The effect of EGDE on CSGA/HKUST-1 and the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) was investigated: the composite aerogel (CSGA) was produced by the ring-opening reaction of the epoxy group of EGDE in alkaline solution. The chemical structure of CSGA/HKUST-1 composite aerogel was characterized by FT-IR, XRD and XPS.49.33 % mass loading of CSGA1/HKUST-1 was achieved and N 2 adsorption and desorption experiment showed the BET specific surface area reached 694.514 m 2 g −1 . SEM observed the CSGA/HKUST-1 composite aerogel pores were filled with a large number of octahedral HKUST-1 crystal particles. CSGA/HKUST-1 composite aerogel has excellent tetracycline adsorption capacity (285.7 mg g −1 ), and the removal efficiency remained at 92.7 % after five cycles of adsorption–desorption. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model adsorption mechanism was successfully concluded. If these properties could be forecasted, operations could be adjusted to optimize boiler performance. Here, we compare the performances of classic time series models and two state-of-the-art time series neural networks for forecasting as-fired liquor heating value, viscosity, and boiling point rise at a Canadian mill. Additionally, we show that, like classic time series models, autoregressive neural networks can be regarded as functions of unknown disturbances, which is useful in comparing model complexities. Our results show that classic time series models can accurately forecast as-fired liquor properties and that classic time series models perform comparably to state-of-the-art time series neural networks. We suspect this is due to the high autocorrelation of mill data that results from frequent measurements relative to long residence times. This autocorrelation is suspected to attenuate the cross-correlations between upstream disturbances and as-fired liquor properties. As a result, neural networks, which are useful for accommodating non-linear cross-correlations and dynamics, struggle to outperform classic time series models and may not always be appropriate for forecasting chemical process parameters.</p>","PeriodicalId":19315,"journal":{"name":"Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal","volume":"40 1","pages":"33-45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.9,"publicationDate":"2024-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11867605/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"143542808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results revealed that carbon electrodes prepared with sodium lignosulfonate (CM-S) exhibited superior specific surface area (SSA) (1,593.5 m 2 g −1 ) and pore volume (PV) (1.03 cm 3 g −1 ) due to the largest relative molecular mass (Mn = 4,539, Mw = 7,290), which is greater than that prepared with alkali lignin (CM-A) and kraft lignin (CM-K), and displayed a well-developed micro-mesoporous macropore hierarchy which was feasible for the efficiency of electron mobility. The electrochemical properties of materials were evaluated, and CM-S showed a mass-specific capacitance of 201 F g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 current density, along with an impressive capacitance retention rate of 54.7 % at 10 A g −1 current density, which is more potential than CM-A and CM-K (specific capacitances: 100 F g −1 and 75 F g −1 respectively). Additionally, maximum energy and power density of CM-S were measured to be 6.98 W h kg −1 and 2306 W kg −1 with excellent retention rate of 95.5 % after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles at a current density of 5 A g −1 . Comparatively, sodium lignosulfonate, compared with alkali lignin and kraft lignin, emerges as a more ideal precursor material for porous carbon electrode.","PeriodicalId":19315,"journal":{"name":"Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal","volume":"39 4","pages":"719-730"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147914078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Part 1 of this investigation deals with the effects of HC and LC refining on fibre properties development. LC refining reduced curl and increased tensile index in a manner similar to hot disintegration whereas HC refining increased curl slightly. In this second part, the correlation between fibre curl and handsheet properties of thermomechanical pulp, subjected to low consistency (LC) refining and hot/cold disintegration is examined. Fibre curl decreased by laboratory disintegration and LC refining and showed a linear correlation with increased tensile index and tensile stiffness. Evaluation of fibre property distributions gave a more detailed description of the development of fibre properties. These revealed that disintegration and LC refining gave different fibre curl versus fibre length distributions, even when their average values were similar. These results confirm that analysing fibre property distributions contributes to a more detailed knowledge of the development of pulp quality. Hot disintegration before laboratory testing exaggerated pulp quality and increase internal fibrillation and can therefore be questioned. When hot disintegration is performed before pulp analyses, the impact of LC refining on paper properties may be misjudged.","PeriodicalId":19315,"journal":{"name":"Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal","volume":"187 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2024-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142252645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, previous studies have mostly focused on the macromechanical properties of paper but lack micro theory based on paper fiber networks. We present a comprehensive experimental and computational study on the mechanical properties of fibers and fiber networks under the influence of microstructure. A beam-spring model was established based on a beam-fiber network to simulate the behavior of fiber networks. Simulations were performed to demonstrate the influence of fiber microstructural parameters such as fiber bond strength, stiffness, failure strength, size, and network density on mechanical features. Mechanical experiments verified that the fiber bond strength had a greater influence on the paper properties than did the fiber strength. This result is highly consistent with that of the model. All the simulations were validated by experimental measurements. Finally, we provided computational insights into the interfiber bond damage pattern with respect to different fiber microlevels and demonstrated that the proposed beam-spring model can be used to predict the response of fiber networks of paper materials. The above research can be used to optimize the formulation, process, and treatment of paper to meet specific application needs.","PeriodicalId":19315,"journal":{"name":"Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal","volume":"2 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.2,"publicationDate":"2024-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142179931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
