According to the recent DARPA BAA - defense against cyber attacks on MANETS (A.K. Ghosh 2004), \"one of the most severe cyber threats is expected to be worms with arbitrary payload that can infect and saturate MANET-based networks on the order of seconds\". Critical to the design of effective worm counter measures in MANET environments is an understanding of the propagation mechanisms and the performance of the mitigation technologies. This work aims to advance the security of these critical systems through increased knowledge of propagation mechanisms, performance and the effect of mitigation technologies. We present both analytic and simulation analysis of mitigation effectiveness. The ultimate goal of these studies is to develop an accurate set of performance requirements on mitigation techniques to minimize worm propagation in tactical, battlefield MANETS.","PeriodicalId":193147,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation (PADS'05)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124442963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For many models the interest patterns are complicated or highly dynamic and are not suitable for expression in this way. Top-down expression also forces the model to contain data about the network communication which should strictly be encapsulated by the infrastructure. We propose a system, based on a distributed shared variable abstraction, capable of automatically deriving interest expressions at the infrastructure level in a 'bottom-up' manner. We demonstrate through a simulated testbed that for certain access patterns this dramatically improves the precision of the IM system without sacrificing transparency from a modeller perspective.","PeriodicalId":193147,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation (PADS'05)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131084667","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One way of speeding up these simulations is to distribute the model over a number of connected workstations. However, this introduces inefficiencies caused by the need for synchronization and message passing between machines. In distributed network simulation, one of the factors affecting message passing overhead is the amount of cross-traffic between machines. We perform an independent benchmark of the parallel/distributed network simulator (PDNS) based on experimental results processed at the Australian centre for advanced computing and communications (ACS) supercomputing cluster. We measure the effect of cross-traffic on wall-clock time needed to complete a simulation for a set of basic network topologies by comparing the result with the wall-clock time needed on a single processor. Our results show that although efficiency is reduced with large amounts of cross-traffic, speedup can still be achieved with PDNS. With these results, we developed a performance model that can be used as a guideline for designing future simulations.","PeriodicalId":193147,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation (PADS'05)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123890169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, partly due to the lack of understanding of the resiliency and efficiency a malnet can have, countering malnets has been ineffective. This paper begins to address this deficiency. Through calculation and simulation for three representative malnets-random, small-world, and Gnutella-like-we show that extremely resilient malnets can be formed to deliver attack code quickly. In particular, we show that disconnecting malnets is possible, but extremely naive approaches such as randomly disinfecting malnodes will not suffice, and effective defenses must either happen very quickly during a second-wave attack, or take effect prior to it.","PeriodicalId":193147,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation (PADS'05)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123827122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two techniques are linked, with one strategy employing the other as an indicator of worm infection. A group defense mechanism shares such indicators among neighboring networks, and when enough corroboration occurs, the network engages in traffic filtering to halt infection attempts. We present an SSFnet-based microscopic simulation of the containment strategy against random scan worms, and explore various performance characteristics of the group defense mechanism. The simulation results help to characterize the conditions and degree to which the integrated quarantine strategy can both slow worm propagation and prevent the worm from reaching its full saturation potential.","PeriodicalId":193147,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation (PADS'05)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128902348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scanning speed of each infected host depends on its resources and the defenses at work in its network. Aggressive worms further interact with the underlying Internet topology - the dynamics of the spread is constrained by the limited bandwidth of network links, and high-volume scan traffic leads to BGP router failure thus affecting global routing. Worm traffic also interacts with legitimate background traffic competing for (and often winning) the limited bandwidth resources. To faithfully simulate worm spread and other Internet-wide events such as DDoS, flash crowds and spam we need a detailed Internet model, a packet-level simulation of relevant event features, and a realistic model of background traffic on the whole Internet. The memory and CPU requirements of such simulation exceed a single machine's resources, creating a need for distributed simulation. We propose a design and present implementation of a distributed worm simulator, called PAWS. PAWS runs on Emulab testbed, which facilitates its use by other researchers. We validate PAWS in a variety of scenarios, and evaluate costs and benefits of distributed worm simulation.","PeriodicalId":193147,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation (PADS'05)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125077278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the increase in the scale and complexity of simulations, large amounts of computational resources are required, and provisioning of the services is becoming increasingly difficult. The grid provides a platform for coordinated resource sharing and application development and execution. In this paper, we focus on extending the high level architecture (HLA) to the grid. More specifically, we propose a distributed simulation framework, called HLAGrid. The framework uses a Federate-Proxy-RTI architecture, which allows resources on the grid to be utilized on demand by using grid services. The architecture also supports federation discovery, security of the simulator logic, and flexible federation construction, such as hierarchical federations. The architecture hides the heterogeneity of the simulators, simulators' execution platforms, and how the simulators communicate with the RTI. All interfaces used in the framework comply with the standard HLA interface specification, which provides reusability to simulators. A prototype of the framework is implemented using DMSO's RTI 1.3NG version 6 and the grid system runs the Globus toolkit.","PeriodicalId":193147,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation (PADS'05)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121605018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sequential discrete event simulation systems usually employ a central event list to manage future events. This is a priority queue ordered by event timestamps. Many different priority queue algorithms have been developed with the aim of improving simulator performance. Researchers developing asynchronous conservative parallel discrete event simulations have reported exceptional performance for their systems running sequentially in certain cases. This paper compares the performance of simulations using a selection of high performance central event list implementations to that achieved using techniques borrowed from the parallel simulation community. Theoretical and empirical analysis of the algorithms is presented demonstrating the range of performance that can be achieved, and the benefits of employing parallel simulation techniques in a sequential execution environment.","PeriodicalId":193147,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation (PADS'05)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127369817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to traditional time-stepped execution methods, we describe an approach using optimistic parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) and reverse computation techniques. We show that reverse computation-based optimistic parallel execution can significantly reduce the execution time of a plasma simulation without requiring a significant amount of additional memory compared to conservative execution techniques. We describe an application-level reverse computation technique that is efficient and suitable for complex scientific simulations involving floating point operations.","PeriodicalId":193147,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation (PADS'05)","volume":"352 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133216681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
