It highlights key factors that contributed to the researcher’s success, including mentorship, persistence, and willingness to learn from failure. The article also explores the challenges faced by the researcher, such as lack of resources. The article concludes with recommendations for aspiring young and mid-career researchers to follow in the footsteps of the author. The present article is organised chronologically and spans the period from childhood research curiosity to the current position as a researcher in the field of psychiatry and mental health. The article is divided into 12 main sections: fundamental research curiosities, interest in mental health research, learning from literature, the status of mental health research in Iraq, why should it matter that we invest in mental health research in Iraq, first publication, making connections to help, challenges, rewards, strategies for success, advice for researchers, and future directions. The hope is that this personal journey inspires and informs others with a similar enthusiasm for research and studies in mental health.","PeriodicalId":192360,"journal":{"name":"GLOBAL PSYCHIATRY ARCHIVES","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127238937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although hypersexual behaviour is not an uncommon phenomenon, only few and controversial treatment options are known so far. To our best knowledge, this is the first report which describes the successful treatment of hypersexual behaviour with methylphenidate in an adult diagnosed with ADHD. Methods: We report the case of a 22-year-old woman diagnosed with ADHD accompanied by recurrent depressive episodes with pronounced hypersexual behaviour. At first admission in our day clinic, the patient reported core symptoms of sustained tension, pronounced impulsivity as well as an uncontrollable sexual urge. The latter was experienced as stressful and unpleasant. As we suspected the diagnosis of ADHD in adulthood, we started a pharmacotherapy with methylphenidate. After the intake, we initially observed a reduction of restlessness and an improvement of concentration which was stable until her discharge. In a follow-up after 15 weeks the patient additionally reported a reduction of her sexual impulses and a significant decrease of her sexual urge since the administration of methylphenidate. This improvement was substantiated by a significantly decreased score on the Hypersexual Behaviour Inventory scale. Conclusion: Administration of methylphenidate might be an alternative pharmacological approach for the treatment of patients suffering from uncontrollable sexual urges and hypersexual behaviour. However, further research is needed to assess the broader efficacy of methylphenidate in the treatment of hypersexual behaviour in patients with and without ADHD.","PeriodicalId":192360,"journal":{"name":"GLOBAL PSYCHIATRY ARCHIVES","volume":"142 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132710971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: 45,803 deceased residents (mean age 87.49ys ± 7.14ys, 67.6% female, no dementia (N=18,993), mild-to-moderate dementia (N=14,687), and severe dementia (N=12,123)) from 357 nursing homes across Switzerland were included in this retrospective cohort study. Activities of daily living (ADL) scores of the Resident Assessment Instrument – Minimum Dataset (RAI-MDS) were used to assess functional health. Multi-phase growth models spanning 24 months prior to death were calculated as a function of dementia status and severity. Results: The functional health trajectories follow a nonlinear pattern with a long period of mild decline with a mean ADL score change of -0.118 points per months (95% CI -0.122 to -0.114) for the no dementia group, followed by a significant terminal drop (mean ADL change of -1.528, 95% CI -1.594 to -1.462) two to three months before death (transition point at -2.221, 95% CI -2.306 to -2.136). Residents with dementia had a steeper preterminal decline (-0.026, 95% CI -0.32 to -0.20 for mild-to-moderate dementia, - 0.056, 95% CI -0.062 to -0.051 for severe dementia) and less terminal decline (0.274, CI 0.211 to 0.337 for mild dementia, -0.230 to 0.336 for severe dementia). However, the transition point and the pattern of decline were similar across the dementia groups, though proceeding at different levels. Conclusion: The dynamics of terminal functional health decline in nursing home residents with and without dementia are similar.","PeriodicalId":192360,"journal":{"name":"GLOBAL PSYCHIATRY ARCHIVES","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131232919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Yazidis have been persecuted for centuries. They have most recently been, targeted by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) when they experienced violence, genocide, enslavement, and forced migration – all of which have had a significant impact on their mental health. Aim: The purpose of this systematic review is to examine mental and psychological health problems among Yazidi children and adolescents following the ISIS invasion of Iraq and Syria in 2014. Methods: The PRISMA protocol was used to conduct a systematic review of the literature. Using related keywords, 182 publications were identified on PubMed and Google Scholar. Finally, 5 full articles were included for data extraction. Inclusion criteria were English papers that studied Yazidi mental and psychiatric disorders in Yazidi children and adolescents, regardless of date or gender. However, research on Yazidi adult mental health and general physical health was excluded. Results: The initial search result found 182 articles; 83 were evaluated for eligibility, with 5 studies meeting full eligibility criteria and being included in the current systematic review. According to the results, Yazidi children and adolescents have suffered from a variety of mental and psychological disorders as a result of the recent traumatic events, which mostly occurred after the ISIS invasion in 2014. The most prevalent are posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression, anxiety, and other mental and psychiatric problems.
