In the present study, the extension of the simplified method of progressive collapse analysis based on Smith's method is attempted to the case of combined loading condition. Firstly, progressive collapse tests are carried out on 1/13-scale three-hold hull girder models referring to a Post-Panamax container ship. The models are fixed to the rigid wall at the aft end and a couple of forces are applied to the fore end so as to generate torsional and vertical bending moment simultaneously. The progressive collapse tests are conducted for the case of the various combinations of torsional and bending moment. The nonlinear finite element analyses by LS-DYNA are executed in accordance with the test conditions. From the test and calculation results, the progressive collapse behavior and the ultimate strength of hull girder models under combined loading are examined. The results will be a basis for the verification of a new simplified analysis method which will be presented in the forthcoming reports.","PeriodicalId":192323,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127011792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations as goals to be achieved by 2030 include \"take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts\" and \"conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development\", and countries around the world are beginning to work on it. The ocean, which occupies about 70% of the earth's surface, has a great influence on the global climate change, and it is extremely important to understand the ocean environment correctly. Recently, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are playing an active role in oceanographic surveys and seafloor exploration. Especially, autonomous underwater gliders that can be operated for a long period of time are attracting attention for global marine environment surveys. The underwater glider with independently controllable main wings developed at Osaka Prefecture University realises high kinetic performance by controlling the left and right main wings independently. In this research, the authors attempted to develop an autonomous control system and verify it by automatic navigation simulation aiming at the establishment of a control system to be implemented on a testbed vehicle of the underwater glider with independently controllable main wings, \"SOARER\".","PeriodicalId":192323,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers","volume":"138 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121790627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional control methods require the dynamic model of the WEC. Modeling errors of the dynamic model, however, make energy absorption smaller and cause incorrect control. The proposed method, which is a model- free control method learns the optimal damping and stiffness coefficients based on experiences. In the proposed control method, damping and stiffness coefficients are able to vary in time-domain depending on the incident waves by deep reinforcement learning. The performance of the proposed control method is investigated through numerical simulation in both regular and irregular waves. Compared with the conventional control method, averaged output power increased, and the power fluctuation decreased without the dynamic model. It is understood that the proposed method is more effective than the conventional control method.","PeriodicalId":192323,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers","volume":"62 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114040047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is one of the promising means for this purpose. In Japan, CCS operators who inject and store CO2 into sub-seabed geological formations are legally required to monitor CO2 leakage in seawater, even though such probability is extremely low; if unusually high CO2 concentration is detected, specifying the position and flux of the associated CO2 seepage is necessary for social responsibility. In this study, we adopted the adjoint marginal sensitivity method to estimate the position and flux of the CO2 naturally seeping on the hillside of a sea knoll on the east of Wakamiko Caldera in Kagoshima Bay, using the pH data observed by an AUV. The tidal currents were time-forwardly simulated and stored to use negatively in the time-backward calculation of the adjoint marginal sensitivity. The result indicated a seepage position on the east hillside of the knoll and a plausible seepage flux. Another observation of the vertical pH distribution implied that there could be two seepage positions at short distances on the same hillside, and the estimated one was in the middle of them. It is then inferred that this method can be applied for the source detection of various marine pollutants and resources.","PeriodicalId":192323,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123685507","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The response and optimum control force on a PA-WEC in regular waves achiving a maximum electric power generation has been already developed taking into account the energy loss in the electric circuit in frequency domain and in regular waves. On the other hand, in irregular waves, to obtain the best control force in timely has been difficult, because the control force act on the instantaneous power generation rate and the whole later heaving response of the PA-WEC. This means that whether the decided control force is the best or not is difficult to judge. Actually, in the previous researches, the researchers applied a lot of way to decide the control force. But the generated electric power in irregular waves ratio to the expected generated power obtained from the wave spectrum is up to almost from 0.3 to 0.7. This paper presents an analytical solution of the control force parameter for maximizing the generated electric power in irregular waves on a PA-WEC in time domain. Then, numerical studies are carried based on the proposed method. From these results, it is shown that the proposed method achieves the generated electric power to the expected generated power obtained from the wave spectrum","PeriodicalId":192323,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121562962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
