The devastating 2023 wildfire season exposes the magnitude of the challenge facing North America, including eastern regions. Post-fire reforestation needs can far exceed current capacity, which relies almost exclusively on manual tree planting. Our review addresses urgent needs to increase reforestation capacity to restore vast burned landscapes that are experiencing regeneration failures. We first provide an overview of current challenges and promising reforestation methods for tree planting and direct seeding. Challenges include addressing regeneration failure risks and limited road access, and strengthening reforestation value chains amid workforce shortages. We discuss the suitability of traditional and innovative reforestation methods, considering these challenges, to situate them within a broader restoration strategy. We show that using multiple methods expands reforestation capacity by providing more options for reforesting sites with a wider range of biophysical conditions. However, robust evidence on method-specific outcomes across different timescales is still needed to understand their effectiveness for post-fire restoration. Future research should further assess the cost-benefits of these methods and improve our ability to predict and mitigate regeneration failures across varying forest landscapes to support efficient restoration efforts. Our work provides a foundation for transferring current knowledge into strategic reforestation planning and execution. It is relevant to communities, scientists, governments and managers seeking to adapt regeneration silviculture to changing fire regimes.
","PeriodicalId":19228,"journal":{"name":"New Forests","volume":"57 5","pages":"53"},"PeriodicalIF":1.5,"publicationDate":"2026-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC13415500/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148619944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, boreal ecosystems face substantial threats from climate change, leading to increased disturbances such as wildfires, insect outbreaks, and disease. In response, reforestation emerges as a vital strategy for maintaining and restoring forest cover. In this perspective paper, we summarize some recent research on plantation establishment in boreal ecosystems of eastern North America and Scandinavia, emphasizing the effectiveness of mechanical site preparation (MSP), species-specific responses, and soil nutrient dynamics. We suggest key areas for future research, including the long-term sustainability of MSP, the development of adaptive strategies to climate variability, species-specific optimization of planting techniques, and integration of technological advances. Addressing these research needs will support the development of adaptive silviculture practices that enhance boreal stands resilience and productivity, helping to meet reforestation objectives and mitigate the impacts of climate change. We aim to stimulate regional, national, and international research initiatives, contributing to the resilience and sustainability of boreal ecosystems.
","PeriodicalId":19228,"journal":{"name":"New Forests","volume":"56 1","pages":"16"},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11618171/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142795049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

BSP) regeneration on wet sites invaded by speckled alder (Alnus incana subsp. rugosa (du roi) R.T. Clausen) following harvest. In 2019, four treatments were established: scalping, mulching, soil inversion, and an untreated control. Black spruce seedlings were planted in 2020. Measurements taken in 2021, at the end of the second growing season, revealed that the treatments doubled the growth and size of seedlings compared to the control group. While differences were small, seedlings in mulched plots showed significantly greater height growth and annual shoot elongation compared to those in inverted plots. The treatments also reduced competing species cover, while promoting the presence of grasses. Environmental conditions and soil properties did not vary significantly between treatments and the control group, except for pH and potassium in some cases. These results suggest that all three site preparation treatments tested are effective in establishing black spruce regeneration on wet sites invaded by speckled alder. Long-term monitoring is needed to assess the economic impact of treatments and better understand the role of alder in nitrogen availability on treated sites.
","PeriodicalId":19228,"journal":{"name":"New Forests","volume":"56 6","pages":"74"},"PeriodicalIF":1.7,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC12627194/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145564867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
