In particular, we propose the use of pulse-shaped multicarrier modulation to convert the doubly dispersive channel into an inter-carrier interference (ICI) channel with small ICI spread. We then propose a novel joint ICI-estimation/data-detection strategy which performs near optimally yet at low complexity, due to the use of an efficient tree search algorithm and the ability to leverage sparseness in the delay-power profile. The delay-power profile, which itself varies in time, can be readily tracked via pilots. Numerical simulations show that our technique gives performance close to genie-aided bounds over highly spread channels.","PeriodicalId":191370,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"12 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123659825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The high transmit power of acoustic transceivers makes the medium access protocol a primary focus point for reducing energy consumption in energy limited underwater devices. Scheduled protocols use very little power by eliminating collisions, but cannot adapt to changing traffic conditions in the same way as random protocols. We attempt to bridge these two ideas by dividing time into scheduled and unscheduled access periods in order to yield the benefits of each protocol. We show that this technique increases the bits delivered per energy unit in many cases of interest. Additionally, the hybrid technique provides low latency for a wider range of traffic rates than either of the two protocols when considered individually. We also investigate some of the design tradeoffs to consider when using a hybrid protocol.","PeriodicalId":191370,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127912273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this regime, Shannon capacity results, which presume long channel codes and an infinitely long information bitstream, are not directly applicable. Further, for scientific data collection, distortion and errors are tolerable at the semantic layer. For this regime, we formulate the problem of sending k successive source symbols using n successive modulation intervals, where n > k. We introduce \"folding\" as a technique to map a k-dimensional source manifold into the n-dimensional modulation space, in order to minimize the average energy consumption per source symbol. We use an Archimedes' spiral, ahelix, and Fermat's spiral, as good foldings for low-dimensional mappings, and compute the energy consumption per source symbol under each.","PeriodicalId":191370,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"216 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134189031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose Dive'N'Rise(DNR) Positioning, the novel idea of using DNR beacons for localization. These beacons get their coordinates from GPS while floating above the water, then they dive into water. While sinking and rising, they broadcast their positions. Sensor nodes are localized by passively listening to DNR beacon messages which reduces the communication cost and the energy consumption. Power consumption is an additional constraint for underwater networks. Network layer schemes for that minimize both transmission time and power consumption are thus of interest. Conventional routing schemes have limitations in both power consumption and delay performance. Application of network coding schemes in rateless fashion results in better delay performance; however, power consumption is greater than for most routing schemes when the network is lightly loaded. This paper proposes a new method for network coding that relies on implicit acknowledgements to improve power consumption performance. Numerical results demonstrate superior performance of the scheme proposed. The method is also applicable to other wireless channels.","PeriodicalId":191370,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133744777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, we are developing a system of networked underwater ocean explorers that drift freely with the currents. However, effective interpretation of collected sensor data hinges on knowing the positions of these drifters while submerged. Due to their uncontrollable motion, positions have to be tracked in time. Unlike in static networks, position estimation therefore represents a recurring cost, which should be minimized for reasons of limited on-board energy supplies. In this paper, we present a low-overhead scheme that is able to trade accuracy for energy savings by cleverly selecting the specific links that are required for the self-localization algorithm. Our technique is also agile enough to quickly adapt to on-demand changes in accuracy requirements, and cuts the position estimation costs by 40% or more under various ocean current dynamics.","PeriodicalId":191370,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131260963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Temporal focusing (pulse compression) mitigates intersymbol interference (ISI) while spatial focusing enables a straightforward extension to multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) communications. Furthermore, the time reversal process can be combined with adaptive channel equalization to remove the residual ISI and compensate for the channel variations, providing nearly optimal performance. The propagation med-ium of underwater acoustic channel exhibits distinct characteristics when contrasted with other common propagation media such as copper, fiber, and radio. In particular there are the extremely slow propagation speed of sound in water, high signal attenuation due to absorption, significant delay spreads and intersymbol interference, and range-dependent transmission bandwidth. These features make the delay-reliability tradeoff for underwater acoustic channels fundamentally different from other channels. The approach is based on error-exponents which enable a physical-layer comparison of multihopping versus no hops while considering the overall throughput. The analysis shows that for typical network parameters, increasing the number of hops dramatically improves both the achievable information rate and the achievable reliability function, which quantitatively captures the decay rate of the decoding error probability as the coding block length increases asymptotically. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the analysis.","PeriodicalId":191370,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2nd Workshop on Underwater Networks","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128272755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
