Proven coal reserves are sufficient for the next 113 years, while natural gas reserve could last up to 55 years. However, given the finite life of these resources and the need to reduce emissions alternative energy resources such as solar, biomass, hydro and wind are suggested as they are clean, abundant and effectively infinite. Solar PV is best known as a method for generating electric power by using solar cells to convert energy from the sun into a flow of electrons. This study was aimed at investigating and establishing the potential of solar PV energy application across South Africa.in different provinces. Moreover, it aimed at assessing the impact of PV efficiency and degradation over number of years. An `Optioneering' approach was used to determine the potential of solar. It is a structured evaluation of the options in support of decision-making. The options (in this case the provinces) were modelled in 3 scenarios with different weights assigned to different key parameters. The Northern Cape Province has the highest solar PV potential for scenarios 1 and 2, followed by the Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal Provinces. Nevertheless, Gauteng Province was found to have the highest solar PV potential for scenario 3. The attributes/parameters and their weighting are therefore significant in deciding the location where solar PV plants are to be established. The PV module efficiency is critical in quantifying the potential power output over a certain period of time. The PV efficiency has shown a tendency of declining over time. It has been established that PV degradation occurs at a faster rate than anticipated. This would have dire consequences for the solar PV investment in South Africa.","PeriodicalId":190533,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Renewable Energy Congress (IREC)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127082974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Grain aeration provides a powerful non-chemical stored grain insect management. Currently, aeration is a suitable and economical device to overcome this problem. Moisture management is vital to prevent spoilage in stored grain. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of using low relative humidity aeration on the wheat moisture content. Results shows that dehumidification of blown air had greater potential for decreasing relative humidity of interstitial air and wheat moisture at 30°C temperature and relative humidity of 40%, 50% and 60%.","PeriodicalId":190533,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Renewable Energy Congress (IREC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127868956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A steady-state simulation model is developed and validated using the flow-sheeting software Aspen-Plus. First an appropriate thermodynamic property model from the software library for the ammonia/water system is tested. The interaction parameters of this model are determined by fitting the equation of state (eos) to VLE data. It is found that the Boston-Mathias modified Peng-Robinson eos with fitted parameters predicts accurately the VLE for the temperature and pressure ranges encountered in commercial chillers. A simulation model of the machine is then developed. The simulation results are found to be in good agreement with data from literature for 35°C cooling air temperature.","PeriodicalId":190533,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Renewable Energy Congress (IREC)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125343964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study monthly variations of solar radiation of M'sila (a province of Algeria) were examined based on data measured during twenty years (1984-2003). In this paper, a determination of the number of years sufficient to estimate monthly global solar radiation among twenty years was done. Likewise, Weibull, Gamma, Normal, logistic, lognormal and loglogistic functions were used to estimate M'sila monthly solar radiation. In addition these functions were compared with the measured data. The performance of the cited functions were studied using statistical parameters such as correlation coefficient R2, root mean square error (RMSE), mean bias error (MBE) and mean absolute bias error (MABE). According to the results found, we can limit our study concerning the treatment of global solar radiation data, in M'sila region, to fifteen (15) years (from 1984 to 1998) instead of twenty (20) years (from 1984 to 2003). Lognormal distribution is the least favorable one to estimate monthly solar radiation on horizontal surface in M'sila region. In contrast, Weibull distribution is the best one.","PeriodicalId":190533,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Renewable Energy Congress (IREC)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124727304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, the electric vehicle is based on the proton exchange membrane fuel cell. The energy optimization problem is explored and inspected using a two-stage controller. In first stage, a predictive controller is designed based on the equivalent consumption minimization strategy. The second stage is an efficient tracking system. The system is tested with a standard driving cycle UDDS. It is simulated in Matlab/Simulink environment. The achieved results show that the two-stage controller utilization ensures the energy consumption minimization. Furthermore, it protects the fuel cell and the battery life.","PeriodicalId":190533,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Renewable Energy Congress (IREC)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121442580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The traditional design of these technologies is the parallel plate membrane based heat exchanger. In this paper, a novel geometric design of the membrane based heat exchanger is proposed. A metal blocks along the channels are inserted, in which their effects on the temperature and humidity ratio distributions are investigated. A two-dimensional numerical model including the momentum, heat and mass transport equations in both fresh and exhaust air streams are established. Therefore, this study provides a solution to improve the heat and mass transfer mechanisms and enhance the membrane based heat exchanger efficiency.","PeriodicalId":190533,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Renewable Energy Congress (IREC)","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132063314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The construction industry constitutes a major part of the world's total energy consumption. As a result, building designers have constantly been urged to pay attention to the energy economics of buildings. Green building practices like passive solar building design, advanced construction, and building operation practices have been evolved over the years. Passive solar architecture basically refers the usage of structural and non-structural elements of the building for the comfort conditions with no additional operational costs. It makes the best possible use of the local geographic and climatic conditions. Such measures help in decreasing the operational costs of a building and increasing the thermal comfort of its occupants often leading to enhanced productivity. These energy efficiency measures also improve building marketability as the cost of operation is reduced. The temperature inside a building is one of the factors to identify the comfort level up to a great extent. Hence, it necessary to predict the internal air temperatures of any building. With this study, an attempt has been made at developing mathematical models that could predict the air temperature inside any building. The works attempts the development of a neural network regression tool which can predict the temperature inside a simple construction when fed with various building specifications as input. The results of this Artificial Neural Network were found to be in close agreement with the actual on-site recorded data. This is the first time that ANN is being used for such application. For the purpose of validation and testing, the data recorded for four rooms varying in architectural aspects over the past year have been taken. These recordings were taken on an hourly basis.","PeriodicalId":190533,"journal":{"name":"2016 7th International Renewable Energy Congress (IREC)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127288574","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
