The examination was conducted at a macroscopic, histological and ultrastructural levels, with observations at the scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The pharyngobranchial organ consists of a denticular antero-lateral filtering portion and a gustative postero-medial one. The entire organ is supported by a complex skeletal system moved by an intrinsic muscle system. The filtering and gustatory functions are closely integrated in this organ so as to justify the particular alimentary habits of Mugilidae.","PeriodicalId":19014,"journal":{"name":"Monitore Zoologico Italiano-Italian Journal of Zoology","volume":"18 1","pages":"29-46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78124379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Survival after submersion was better at the colder temperature (20°C) than at the warmer temperature (35°C). During post-submersion (recovery) at all temperatures an initial overshoot in oxygen uptake was noted. Oxygen debt repayment after different durations of submersion periods did not show any consistency, but it was generally seen that when the duration of the submersion period was increased the percentage of oxygen debt repaid was decreased in relation to temperature and size.","PeriodicalId":19014,"journal":{"name":"Monitore Zoologico Italiano-Italian Journal of Zoology","volume":"129 1","pages":"11-18"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78182798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(WHO/IN/Musca domestical/1) at pH 4.8 and at 38°C. p-nitrophenylphosphate (NPP) was used as substrate. The course of the enzymatic reaction in function with the time and in function with the different substrate concentrations was examined. The activity of these enzymes in the course of the adult life of the two sexes was analyzed: this decreases with time being greater in the females up until the 9th day. After this, the males present a greater activity which reaches its maximum point on the 15th day. The decrease in activity for both sexes is greatest within the first 9 days of adult life.","PeriodicalId":19014,"journal":{"name":"Monitore Zoologico Italiano-Italian Journal of Zoology","volume":"39 1","pages":"105-115"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80594059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main topics investigated were morphometric characters, squamation morphogenesis, distribution of cutaneous sensory organs and modified scales. Morpho-functional problems are discussed, with special reference to hydrodynamic aspects. The little sleeper, S. rostratus, has a typical squaloid morphology. In all ontogenetic stages, a peculiar short keel occurs in the caudal peduncle, above the ventral hypochordal lobe. The function of the keel could be to improve turning ability and/or to act as a stabilizer. The caudal morphology belongs to the squaloid type (THOMSON & SIMANEK, 1977) and differs from that of the strictly benthic species. On this basis we therefore believe that S. rostratus is a benthopelagi...","PeriodicalId":19014,"journal":{"name":"Monitore Zoologico Italiano-Italian Journal of Zoology","volume":"27 1","pages":"27-70"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73154430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, it was possible to demonstrate a clear-cut preference for these waters compared to waters where other fishes have been kept. If some elvers or juvenile eels have been kept for few hours in the water (three individuals per litre for 24 hr), the effect persists, but it is less marked. The behaviour seems to depend on species-specific substances present in the mucus or in the catabolic products. Effect of social facilitation occurred in the experiments, as suggested by shorter reaction times at higher concentrations of animals (20 instead of 10). Behavioural differences among elvers and juvenile eels indicate a higher rheotactic response by the former.","PeriodicalId":19014,"journal":{"name":"Monitore Zoologico Italiano-Italian Journal of Zoology","volume":"82 1","pages":"183-191"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76045342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mucoserous cells show a neutral mucosubstance, sialic acid and protein radicals. Seromucous cells of Duvernoy's gland show a neutral mucosub- stance and protein radicals.
