Sexual selection is unlikely to account for protandry because females do not mate soon after emergence, and sometimes mate multiply. North-south differences in both emergence order and relatedness of workers to brood fit the hypothesis that protandry is the result of worker conflict with the queen over the sex ratio. Protandry allows the queen to determine the sex ratio. Protogyny could be the result of greater male than female mortality prior to mating. It could also be the result of a variable and unpredictable number of days for brood production, if females can become either workers or reproductives until late in their development. In this case protogyny would allow the decision to produce reproductives rather than workers to be delayed for a few more weeks. Texas populations of P. metricus Say, P. bellicosus Cresson, P. dorsalis (Fabr.) and P. exclamam Vierek all produce ma...","PeriodicalId":19014,"journal":{"name":"Monitore Zoologico Italiano-Italian Journal of Zoology","volume":"25 1","pages":"87-100"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85332434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(black, cinnabar, vestigial) was estimated in two lines selected for short wing (C and CF) and in a cross between them (F1). The recombination rate in the selected lines was different from that in the Canton strain from which they were derived; moreover, the two selected lines differed between themselves, while the recombination rate in the F1 population was similar to that observed in the parental line C. These results suggest that the action of the factors which modify the recombination in the C line are «dominant» over those in the CF line. The results obtained have relevance in the study of population dynamics: it is argued that selection and recombination are part of an auto-regulating complex; it is also suggested that the «dominance» effect of the factors involved in recombination control may provide a «dynamic barrier» which causes the gene pools of the two populations to behave differ...","PeriodicalId":19014,"journal":{"name":"Monitore Zoologico Italiano-Italian Journal of Zoology","volume":"41 1","pages":"231-237"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89850858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are two types of secretory tubules which differ chiefly in the staining properties of both the secretory cells and the secretion within the tubular lumina. Both tubules have in their walls two additional layers besides the secretory layer: one of smooth muscle cells and one of periluminal epithelial cells. The muscle layer, located upon the secretory cells, occupies an unusual position and probably aids in the rapid discharge of the secretion accumulated in the tubular lumen. The role of the periluminal epithelium, whose structure varies in different zones of the gland, may change according to its localization. A comparison between the histology of the finger-like gland of Vaginula and that of the multifid glands of Helix reported in the literature, reveals clear differences between these sex organs which are regarded as analo...","PeriodicalId":19014,"journal":{"name":"Monitore Zoologico Italiano-Italian Journal of Zoology","volume":"13 1","pages":"345-358"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73494447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pseudocassina ocellata Ahl, 1924 and P. rugosa Ahl, 1924 are synonyms of Leptopelis gramineus (Boulenger, 1898). Five of the six species are known only from Ethiopia; an unusually high proportion of endemics which is explained by the fact that four (L. gramineus, L. ragazzii, L. yaldeni and L. susanae) are montane forms having their lower limits of distribution at about 2000 m or above, and there is a marked tendency for different species to be associated with different massifs. The remaining endemic is L. vannutellii, a species of lowland forest in southwestern Ethiopia. Leptopelis bocagei (Gunther, 1864) appears to be a more widely distributed form, although the application of this name to Ethiopian specimens is provisional since their relationship with typical bocagei from further south remains to be clarified. It is used by the females to handle the egg at the moment of oviposition, it becomes the substratum and a protection for the young larva, it serves as a dish for the larval food and the place where reserves of liquid food for the colony are stored. In some species of Parischnogaster the substance is very probably the same as that used to construct the ant guards, sticky barriers against cursorial predators, with the possible addition of different secretions from the mouth.","PeriodicalId":19014,"journal":{"name":"Monitore Zoologico Italiano-Italian Journal of Zoology","volume":"28 1","pages":"91-99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75602098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
