{"title":"Efficacy of an Oral Ageratum Conyzoides Formulation on Increasing Hair Growth and Decreasing Hair Loss in Males and Females: A Randomised Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Study","authors":"P. We previously demonstrated the safety and efficacy of a topical Ageratum conyzoides (A. conyzoides) formulation in improving hair growth and decreasing hair loss. Objective A follow-up 12-week double-blind, randomised clinical trial investigating the efficacy and safety of A. conyzoides extract in an oral formulation, in males and females over 18-years of age. Methods 250 mg of A. conyzoides or a placebo was supplemented daily over a 12-week period to 84 healthy males or females with hair loss. The primary outcome was hair growth assessed by measuring hair density using HairCheck®, and hairline recession. Hair loss was measured by the mean number of hairs lost in a one-minute combing test and hair/tug pull test. Other assessments included Norwood/Hamilton and Ludwig-Savin scales evaluating male and female pattern baldness, respectively. Biochemical and haematological parameters were also assessed, as change from baseline for each group. Results Twelve (12)-week daily supplementation of A. conyzoides resulted in a significant reduction in hairline recession compared to the placebo group. A trend towards significance was observed for hair density between groups, where hair density increased in the A. conyzoides group and decreased in placebo group from their respective baseline values. No significant differences were found in hair loss measures or the Norwood/Hamilton and Ludwig-Savin scales. A significant difference was found in the change from baseline for total prostaglandins between groups at week 12, with a decrease from baseline in the active group and an increase in the placebo group. In males, a significant difference in the change from baseline was seen for type-2 5a-reductase, with a decrease from baseline in the active group and increase in the placebo group. While a broad range of medical and dressing treatments exist for HS, surgery is often considered the only curative approach. The aim of this study is to comprehensively review existing and emerging surgical options available for the treatment of HS. Methods Using the key phrase “Hidradenitis Suppuravita” and the MeSH terms “surgery or surgical” and “treatment or procedure”, a search of the Ovid Medline and Pubmed databases was conducted 2012 to 2022. Forty-eight studies meeting criteria were identified and included in the literature review. Results Many methods exist for the treatment of HS and there have been promising small scale series and reports that highlight positive disease and quality-of-life (QoL) outcomes associated with some surgical treatment modalities. Most methods are centred around excision of all diseased tissue followed by varying methods of reconstruction. Some novel methods, such as laser ablation, are also used. Each method has its own strengths and weaknesses. Selection of method is currently made based on a case-by-case basis such as disease severity, disease location and surgeon preference. Conclusion Further randomised control trials with larger patient populations are needed to quantify the efficacy and safety of the various surgical methods available. Botulinum toxin (BoNT) is produced by clostridium botulinum which is an anaerobic, spore forming, rod shaped bacteria. The botulinum toxin complex contains a 150 KD neurotoxin together with a complex additional protein. The neurotoxin is cleaved by the clostridial proteases into heavy and light chain. Whether food has an effect on appearance has not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this prospective, single-armed study was to evaluate the impact of consuming two nutrient-dense functional foods, which are low in salt, sugar, and saturated fats, on hair, skin, and fingernail health. Methods Both subjective (self-reported questionnaires and photographs) and objective (i.e., salivary pH and skin hydration) tests were used to evaluate appearance. Weekly compliance with nutrient-dense foods, body weight, and quality of life assessment were also recorded. Results Participants(n=28) consumed most of the nutrient-dense foods and remained weight stable, which was the goal of the study to exclude the effect of changes in body weight on appearance. Neither objective measurement of appearance showed significant improvements. Subjective measurements using questionnaires specific to hair, skin, and fingernails improved significantly over the 8-week study. Rating of photographs that the participants took of themselves improved significantly over the 8-weeks. These included reduced redness, decreased pore size, and better skin color. Using an acne-rating scale, a significant improvement was observed at week 8 compared to baseline. The quality of life parameters improved significantly including feeling of well-being, feeling full, having more energy, sleeping better, having less stress, and being more focused. Conclusion Inclusion of two nutrient-rich, functional foods in the diet improved the appearance of hair, skin, and fingernails. ATE can occur in people of any age and ethnicity and is considered to be a quite common condition in either sex even if women are more likely to have a lowered quality of life and restricted social contacts as compared to men as a result of hair loss. Brittle nail syndrome (BNS) is a common condition affecting up to 20% of the population, especially women over 50 years of age. Nails affected by BNS appear ragged, thin, and dull. The clinical features of BNS include horizontal splits within the nail plate (onychoschizia) and increased longitudinal ridging or splitting (onychorrhexis). In BNS oral supplementation, trace elements and amino acids (especially L-Cystine) have been reported to be useful to ameliorate the nail plate condition. Objective We hypothesized that a nutritional approach, with nutrients of which the composition is close to the human keratin, could be effective to decrease hair loss during telogen effluvium and to improve brittle nails condition. At this purpose, a clinical study was designed to investigate the efficacy of a natural keratin hydrolysate obtained from a non-human source (feathers) on both aTE and BNS. Methods The in vivo effects of a natural keratin hydrolysate, Kera-Diet® (KD) upon human hair and nails condition was tested in a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, benchmark (BE) and placebo (PL) controlled study involving 60 women during 90 days. In all subjects, Anagen/Telogen hair, hair volume and density, pull test, global photography, hair and nails brightness, and nail plate growth were measured at baseline and after 45 and 90 days of products use. A self-assessment test was carried out at the end of the study. Results With the KD treatment group, hair density, percentage of hair in anagen phase, hair and nails brightness, and nails growth were significantly increased compared to PL treatment group. Interestingly, with this same group, the diagnosis of aTE by pull testing was negative from 45 days. The efficacy of KD was equal to or greater than PL treatment group. Conclusion In this study, we demonstrated that daily oral administration of 1000 mg during 3 months of a natural extensively keratin hydrolysate, Kera-Diet®, associated to trace elements and specific vitamins was effective to improve both hair and nails condition. Dermoscopic findings in LN has been documented in very few cases in literature. We present a case of ALN with koebnerization, characteristic histology and dermoscopic features. Dermoscopy revealed round, bluish white streaks in “fern leaf ” pattern in the background of brownish reticular network. As a response of the physical activity, the concentration of several hormones is altered, as the cortisol. Different specimens are used to determination of concentration of the cortisol, like saliva, urine, blood samples and hair. The aim of this narrative review is to present scientific information about the use of the hair to evaluate the concentration of cortisol in individuals that have performed physical activity. Materials and Methods Publications were accessed in the database PubMed September 12th, 2018 using the keywords hair and “physical activity” and cortisol. Results In general, it was found that the hair can be used to determine the concentration of cortisol in different populations. Conclusions In conclusion, all the considerations of this review, it is possible to conclude that the hair can be used successfully, as a specimen, to determine the concentration of the cortisol in the body. The innovative composition of absorbable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)/caprolactone (PCL) threads enriched with hyaluronic acid (HA) has triggered the interest of aesthetic practitioners. Objective To compare the aesthetic outcomes of armouring procedures with absorbable PLLA/PCL threads versus the same procedure performed with PLLA/PCL/HA threads (APTOS, Tbilisi, Georgia threads). Materials and Methods Eight patients underwent thread insertion in the face (PLLA/PCL threads on one side and PLLA/PCL/HA threads on the other). Aesthetic outcome was determined subjectively by the patient after 7 days using a 5-point rating questionnaire. Wrinkles were evaluated objectively using 3D photosystem software after 7, 30, and 90 days. Results Seven days after treatment there was significantly less pain, less swelling, less burning and a faster reduction of skin irregularities on the side treated with HA-enriched threads (all p<0.05). The side of the face treated with HA-enriched threads also demonstrated faster and more obvious improvement of wrinkles. Conclusion Absorbable PLLA/PCL threads have a reliable reputation for oval correction of the face and long-lasting biostimulation. {"title":"Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment for Vaginal Rejuvenation in Post-Menopausal Indian Women","authors":"R. Pillai, S. It has also been proposed for the woman with urge and stress urinary incontinence. CO2 stimulates collagen/elastin contraction, neocollagenesis, and neovascularization. Aim To study the efficacy of CO2 laser in the improvement of VVA, stress urinary incontinence, urge incontinence and sexual functioning. Materials and Methods Twenty-six patients who were in the menopausal transition to post-menopausal age group who presented with any one of the above-mentioned complaints were enrolled in our study. Prior to the treatment, a vaginal examination was performed to ensure patients’ eligibility for the treatment and to determine the vaginal health index score (VHIS), subjective evaluation of VVA symptoms was provided using the visual analog scale (VAS) and the vaginal tightening and patients’ satisfaction were assessed. They also took a questionnaire regarding their sexual functioning. They underwent 3 sessions of CO2 laser with a 1-month interval. Results Significant improvement in VVA was noted after 12-weeks which was observed in vaginal elasticity, fluid volume, epithelial integrity, and patients noted the reduced intensity of vaginal symptoms, such as vaginal burning, dryness, itching, and dyspareunia which was confirmed by improvement in VHIS and VAS. There was a subjective improvement in some patients for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and user interface (UI) as per patient feedback. Patients also noted a significant improvement in quality of life (QoL) and sexual functioning as there were improvement in female sexual function index (FSFI) and domain scores (i.e., desire, arousal, lubrication, pain, orgasm, satisfaction). Conclusion Fractional CO2 laser treatment definitely improved symptoms associated with VVA, stress and urge urinary incontinence, sexual functioning and overall QoL.
