Cloud-networked infrastructures are being setup by the media companies to aggregate news feeds from affiliates, and to meet the elastic demands of Internet-scale users accessing news feeds. However, cyber attacks could compromise these just-in-time news feed services and hackers could particularly launch data integrity as well as denial-of-service attacks that: (a) tarnish the reputation of media companies and (b) impact the service availability for users. In this paper, we describe data integrity and availability checking techniques to protect just-in-time news feed services against cyber attacks in use cases such as: (a) “Data-in-Motion” - when obtaining just-in-time news feeds (e.g., RSS feeds) from affiliates and (b) “Data-at-Rest” - when compiled news feeds reside within cloud-networked infrastructure for real-time premium subscriber access. Using concepts of distributed trust and anomaly detection and a realistic testbed environment in the DeterLab infrastructure, we show the impact of the different cyber attacks and propose solutions to defend against them.","PeriodicalId":188772,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 4th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129615015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since mobile network operators support the last-mile Internet access to users, they have advantages over other cloud providers by providing users with better mobile connectivity and required quality of service (QoS). Compared to other third-party cloud (TPC) providers such as Amazon and Google, however, MTC providers usually have a much smaller scale of computing resources. This paper presents an approach for MTC providers to take advantage of both MTC and TPC so that they can offer better and cheaper cloud services to their customers. The opportunity comes from the discounts that TPC normally offers to group buyers as well as the better QoS that MTC can support. Our solution is to allow MTC providers to act as a brokerage, called MTC brokerage, to broker TPC cloud resources and integrate the resources reserved from TPC with those of their own MTC. We address the technical challenges of optimally allocating users' cloud requests to MTC and TPC data centres to meet users' QoS requirement with minimum cost. We also study the price range that can be profitable to a MTC brokerage. We then investigate the resource reservation problem with dynamic request changes. We evaluate our solution using real Google traces collected over a 29-day period from a Google cluster. The results show that our solution results in cost savings for both MTC providers and their customers.","PeriodicalId":188772,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 4th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121539379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Attention has focused on greening the data centers. Energy efficient virtual network embedding (EE-VNE) has been studied to save energy consumption in data centers, which has been proved to be NP-hard. Especially, when considering multiple data centers with evolving virtual network resources requirements, it becomes much more challenging to approach an optimal solution in a reasonable amount of time. We propose an Ant Colony Optimization based Energy Efficient Virtual Network Embedding and scheduling (ACO-EE-VNE) to minimize energy usage in multiple data centers for both computing and network resources by modeling the EE-VNE as a construction graph. In addition, we reduce the space complexity of ACO-EE-VNE by developing a novel way to track and update the pheromone. Our extensive evaluation results show that our ACO-EE-VNE could reduce energy consumption up to 52% and double the acceptance ratio compared with existing virtual network embedding algorithms.","PeriodicalId":188772,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 4th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130281431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, mobile devices are ill-suited to execute most these applications due to their hardware limitations. Computational offloading offers a way to augment mobile computation power, but it introduces a communication latency, potentially weakening or negating its advantages. To meet the user demand for high performance, we propose a new service architecture called Acceleration as a Service (AXaaS). We formulate AXaaS based on the observation that most resource-intensive applications, such as real-time face-recognition and augmented reality, have similar resource-demand characteristics: a vast majority of the program execution time is spent on a limited set of library calls, such as Generalized Matrix-Multiply operations (GEMM), or FFT. Our AXaaS model suggests accelerating only these operations by the Telecom Service Providers (TSP). We envision the TSP offering this service through a monthly computational service charge, much like their existing monthly bandwidth charge. We demonstrate the technological and business feasibility of AXaaS on a proof-of-concept real-time face recognition application.","PeriodicalId":188772,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 4th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132482138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we compare the performance of compute-intensive applications on CPUs and GPUs offered by Amazon's cloud and show that not all applications exhibit speedups when executed on the GPU. Even for applications that exhibit speedup on the GPU, the overall application performance may be bottlenecked by network delay. For such cases, the high cost of GPU instances is inefficient since it does not improve application performance. We also show that the network performance of different instances can vary significantly overtime and public clouds may throttle network bandwidth for applications that generate significant network traffic.","PeriodicalId":188772,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 4th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126854059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We model various physical relationships in the data center as a network, including heat movements caused by airflow and heat generation by servers. Since changes in temperature distribution depend on physical properties of the data center such as equipment locations and server types, model parameters (connection weights in the network) that characterize relationship of nodes are determined by a machine learning technique using actual data center operation data. The proposed method provides prediction results in a shorter time than traditional methods such as model based on computational fluid dynamics and potential flow model, while maintaining prediction accuracy. We evaluate the performance of the proposed model through comparison with actual data from our experimental data center. The evaluation indicates that the proposed model can predict 10-minute future temperature distributions in 60 places in 3.3 ms, with a root mean square error of 0.49 degrees.","PeriodicalId":188772,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 4th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132290300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a scheme to monitor the energy level and communication quality as a part of a mobile user context information. We subsequently developed a resource allocation and scheduling scheme to adapt to the context for the benefit of both the cloud user and the cloud provider. The objective is to reduce the execution cost of the jobs while meeting the jobs deadline set by the users. A Deadline-Based Simulated Annealing algorithm was used for resource allocation and scheduling of resources. Simulation shows advantages to the context aware cloud system over the context free cloud system in terms of execution cost and resource utilization.","PeriodicalId":188772,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 4th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134437261","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Automatic load balancing and failure recovery services are commonly offered by IaaS and PaaS providers to help achieve these goals. In this paper, we present Phantom: a failure simulation, monitoring, and profiling framework whose main goal is to ensure adequate dependability and availability of cloud subsystems. Phantom utilizes failure simulation to “perturb” the cloud during normal operating times, while monitoring and profiling service availability as perceived by the end user. Unlike traditional cloud monitoring systems, Phantom is an “active meta-monitor” that can detect degradation of the cloud's own failure detector and recovery systems. We describe Phantom's main contributions, i.e., (1) Havoc, an extensible cloud failure simulator, and (2) a meta-monitor and analytic method for continuously profiling failure detector and recovery service quality. We demonstrate Phantom's sensitivity to service degradation through a variety of experiments conducted on an open cloud platform.","PeriodicalId":188772,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 4th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115895120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Auto-scaling enables existing tenants to modify their services or service availability, for example, to meet market demand fluctuations or to prepare for high-traffic events and scheduled load changes. Cloud operators, in response, need to accommodate such requests by provisioning additional resources or reconfiguring current ones. This manuscript shows that such a decision problem, in addition to being combinatorially complex, is not intuitive, highlighting several tradeoffs between disruption times due to service migration and resource redundancy to achieve higher service availability. We present RAS, an availability-aware auto-scaling scheme for managing Virtual Network (VN) scaling requests. RAS provides a robust adaptive approach for managing requests change over time while maintaining their availability requirement. Our numerical results prove that our suggested approach harnesses the benefits of migration and redundancy to achieve an adaptive scaling technique that outperforms migration or redundancy oblivious techniques.","PeriodicalId":188772,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 4th International Conference on Cloud Networking (CloudNet)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115477486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
