The focus of this work is to merge 3D medical images coming from several modalities (CT, PET, MRI, etc.), organized as series of 2D image slices, while preserving the salient information. The algorithm aims also at enhancing the visualization of fused images by applying a color to source images. A pre-processing stage using rescaling and resampling filters makes the spatial resolution and the image slice number of the input series equal. Images are i) decomposed by 3D RDWT, ii) combined through appropriate fusion rules based on average, variance and energy, and iii) reconstructed by 3D IRDWT. Experimental results validate the superiority of the proposed 3D technique over other existing algorithms on the basis of subjective and objective criteria.","PeriodicalId":188447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th IEEE International Conference on Information Technology and Applications in Biomedicine","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126771755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although it is caused by the improper flow of urine, the nephron destruction can be magnified by various molecular processes. In the current work, we aim to study 725 antibodies spotted on antibody arrays for a set of 20 pediatric subjects divided into four groups according to ON status: control, children with mild obstruction and two groups of children with severe obstruction. To this end, Gene ARMADA, an integrated platform for microarray data analysis, was employed to identify 43 differentially expressed antibodies in urine along the four subject groups and cluster these into groups of similarly expressed proteins. The differentially expressed proteins were then related to Gene Ontology terms (GOTs) and over-presented GOTs were identified.","PeriodicalId":188447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th IEEE International Conference on Information Technology and Applications in Biomedicine","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114458057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Respiration and blood volume pulse signals were recorded in the rest and auditory stimulation periods from fifty participants. Respiration rate, heart rate and beat-to-beat interval values were extracted as features. Results indicated that patients had higher respiration and heart rate than controls in all the periods. Although CTM evoked a much more increase in respiration rate in controls, no significant respiration rate differences were found between stimulation periods in the schizophrenia patients. While accelerated heart rate values obtained during stimulation periods in the control group, a deceleration was found in the patients. In conclusion, our study has shown that respiration and heart rate responses to CTM might be used as discriminating features to compare autonomic differences between schizophrenics and controls.","PeriodicalId":188447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th IEEE International Conference on Information Technology and Applications in Biomedicine","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116721583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The platform will incorporate different reconstruction algorithms that have been developed for DTS and a number of filters that can be used before or after the reconstruction of the image in order to remove the noise. The platform was exploited to compare the quality of images reconstructed with different algorithms. For this purpose, a limited number simulated projection data of a tissue-equivalent breast phantom was generated using an in-house developed XRayImagingSimulator. The quality evaluation of reconstructed breast images shows an advantage for filtered algorithms. The platform will allow the comparison of results and optimization and further development of reconstruction and noise removal algorithms.","PeriodicalId":188447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th IEEE International Conference on Information Technology and Applications in Biomedicine","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129713017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, robot-assisted intracardiac surgeries on the beating heart are still in their infancy due to the challenges associated with the dynamic environment of operation. An approach to address those challenges is the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for preoperative planning as well as for real-time intraoperative guidance. The objective of this paper is to propose a novel cyber-physical system for planning and performing robot-assisted MRI guided interventions in the beating heart with particular focus on aortic valve implantations. Our ongoing research focuses on developing a computational core for MRI-based preoperative planning and generation of dynamic robot maneuvering trajectories, real-time tissue tracking, and a novel MR-compatible robotic manipulator for transapical access to the beating heart.","PeriodicalId":188447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th IEEE International Conference on Information Technology and Applications in Biomedicine","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129773790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we advocate the exploitation of existing biological knowledge in order to guide the cluster analysis of gene expression data. To this end we present a biologically inspired probabilistic model and a modified Expectation-Maximization algorithm for the estimation of its parameters. Finally we perform some initial evaluation of the clustering results of the proposed model.","PeriodicalId":188447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th IEEE International Conference on Information Technology and Applications in Biomedicine","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124611022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have evaluated the practical performance of splay tree alternates in comparison with the original version of splay trees. In this investigation, we utilize plain splay trees, a log log n-competitive variation, and a randomized version of splay trees. It is experimentally observed that the compression achieved in the case of the log log n-competitive technique is, as expected, more efficient than the one of the plain splay trees.","PeriodicalId":188447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th IEEE International Conference on Information Technology and Applications in Biomedicine","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130623309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present work, we explore fractal analysis to parameterize the temporal and spectral variability of normal and abnormal VAG signals. The power spectrum analysis method was used with the 1/f model to derive estimates of the fractal dimension. Classification accuracy of up to Az = 0.74 was obtained, in terms of the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve, with a database of 89 VAG signals. The result compares well with the performance of other features derived in previous related works and could help in the detection and monitoring of knee-joint pathology.","PeriodicalId":188447,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 10th IEEE International Conference on Information Technology and Applications in Biomedicine","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121685626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
