Their tasks are considerably more challenging than those of civil pilots due to additional mission tasks, which include control of sensors, weapons, and other systems, under consideration of constraints and uncertainties. In addition, the pilots coordinate with manned and, as envisioned in fighter development programs (e.g., FCAS), unmanned platforms. This adds coordination with manned-unmanned teams to the pilots’ responsibilities (Lindner et al., 2022). In this multitasking environment, efficient management of attention is crucial to pilot performance (Olivier Lefrancois et al., 2016). Attention-related problems in human-automation interaction are well known and often described as a possible cause of aviation accidents (Jones & Endsley, 1996; Kelly & Efthymiou, 2019; Shorrock, 2007). There are different problems described in literature, such as attentional tunneling (Wickens, 2005), inattentional blindness or deafness (Dehais et al., 2019), vigilance performance decrement (Thomson et al., 2015) or complacency (Parasuraman & Manzey, 2010). The consequence of all these phenomena is a loss of situation awareness (SA) in specific situational aspects when the pilot fails to attend relevant information in the cockpit (Jones & Endsley, 1996). Effective training in monitoring and automation operation is crucial to improve pilot attention management, but nevertheless, the interaction between pilots and cockpit remains ‘hierarchical’ in the sense, that the cockpit cannot be aware of the pilot’s errors. In this context, the idea of developing user-aware systems has been proposed to enable error-reducing adaption of a workplace (Brand & Schulte, 2018; Fortmann & Mengeringhausen, 2014; Peysakhovich et al., 2018).","PeriodicalId":188089,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Cognitive Aircraft Systems","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115048025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ćosić, Siniša Popović, Marko Šarlija, Ivan Kesedžić, Mate Gambiraza","doi":"10.5220/0011963800003622","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5220/0011963800003622","url":null,"abstract":"INTRODUCTION It is well known that human factors are associated with a substantial number of military aviation accidents (de Hoyos, 2019). To avoid such catastrophic events, continuous enhancement of pilot selection processes using state-of-the-art scientific research results is needed since traditionally used self-report paper-and-pencil personality measures are highly prone to self-report bias (Birkeland et al., 2006). More objective and reliable selection processes can also minimize drop-out rates among pilot candidates in later and more expensive stages of training process. Therefore, selection procedures for military pilots deserve more attention as new scientific results become available (Broach et al., 2019). Unfortunately, scientific literature is remarkably scarce in addressing these crucial aspects of selection process, despite declaratively acknowledging the importance of stress resilience, stress tolerance and stress coping skills for future fighter pilots. Empirical support regarding the role of personality in pilot performance is lacking, and further improvements in the pilot selection procedures are expected (Carretta, 2000). Despite the relatively low predictive validity of personality assessment instruments (Broach et al., 2019), specific personality characteristics closely related to stress resilience were shown to play a significant role in mission success in military or other dangerous occupations (Wood et al., 2015). The features concerning stress and cognitive resilience, which may have long-term impact on future pilot’s task performance are neglected in the pilot’s selection process (Grassmann et al., 2017). Furthermore, some research recognizes individual differences in stress and cognitive resilience features as an important source of variability that have short-term and potentially long-term effects on individual task performance (Staal et al., 2008; Šarlija et al., 2021; Vine et al., 2015). Therefore, the value of objectivized assessment of stress and cognitive resilience in the early phases of pilot selection is not yet sufficiently recognized. In our recent project and articles, we have addressed the challenging problem of stress resilience prediction (Ćosić et al., 2019a; Ćosić et al., 2019b; Ćosić et al., 2019c; Šarlija et al., 2021), as well as cognitive resilience (Kesedžić et al., 2020). Mental resilience in this abstract considers stress and cognitive resilience, as well as influence of fatigue on successful operations in military and civilian stressful and unpredictable environments. Therefore, prediction of mental resilience in the context of military pilot selection deserves particular attention. Based on our multidisciplinary research so far on stress and cognitive resilience we propose an approach for prediction of mental resilience which is based on multimodal measurements and related stress resilience features like startle reactivity, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, cardiac allostasis, as well as cognitive ","PeriodicalId":188089,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Cognitive Aircraft Systems","volume":"131 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116363448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Causse","doi":"10.5220/0012127500003622","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5220/0012127500003622","url":null,"abstract":"Automation in modern cockpits contributed to improvements in flight safety by reducing pilot workload, fatigue, or increasing situation awareness (Lee & Seppelt, 2012). Yet, whereas lack of automation was problematic in the beginnings of aviation, growing role of automation now raises new challenges with experts pointing at risks associated with an over-reliance of pilots on automatisms. The first risk associated with use of automatisms is the loss of situation awareness associated with pilots being « out-of-the-loop » (Endsley & al., 1995) or unable to effectively monitor or question automated systems when required (Mumaw & al., 2001 ; Parasuraman & al., 1993). Second, when flying with high levels of automation, pilots may be prone to over-confidence (Antonovich, 2008) or automation complacency (Parasuraman & al., 2010) that can result in an improper monitoring of flight instruments that would further challenge pilot abilities to take-over in case of automation failure (Nikolic & Starter, 2007). Improper monitoring has been involved in 80% of major aircraft accidents in the US between 1978-1990 (NTSB, 1994). At last and in the long run, over-relying on automatisms may also induce loss of manual flying skills (Halsbeck & Zhang, 2017). The objectives of this study were to analyze airline pilots’ gaze behavior when using different levels of automation. We hypothesized that gaze behavior would be influenced by the level of automation and pilot’s role (pilot-flying or pilot-monitoring) ; that a low level of automation would be associated to lower performances, increased workload and an increased time spent on primary flight parameters ; and that these effects would be more important for pilot-flying.","PeriodicalId":188089,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 1st International Conference on Cognitive Aircraft Systems","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116102380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
