The new officers and the council members are as follows: President, William E. Mitch, MD; Immediate Past President, Walter H. Horl, MD, PhD; President-elect, John Walls, MD; Secretary/ Treasurer, George Kaysen, MD, PhD; Councillors, Gianfranco Guarnieri, MD, Mary Kay Hensley, MS, RD, William Keane, MD, Yoshimatsu Niwa, MD, Boleslaw Rutkowski, MD, PhD, and Sudhir Shah, MD; Ex officio Council Members, Joel D. Kopple, MD and Shaul G. Massry, MD: The Society’s Thomas Addis Award was given at the meeting to William E. Mitch, We are pleased to present the Proceedings of the Ninth International Congress on Renal Nutrition and Metabolism. The Ninth International Congress was held in Vienna, Austria from August 29 to September 1, 1998. The Chairmen of the Local Organizing Committee were Prof. Walter Horl and Prof. Wilfred Druml. As with the previous International Congresses, several hundred participants came from many nations and several continents. The proceedings of this meeting reflect much of the current areas of scientific inquiry in nephrology particularly with regard to the broad field of renal nutrition and metabolism. Much information and many innovative ideas were presented and discussed. The subject matter includes new information on appetite, the role of inflamMD. The enthusiasm of the participants, the high quality mation in the pathogenesis of malnutrition, in the development of atherosclerosis and in the association between of the data presented, and the rigor of the discussions have convinced the Council of the International Society malnutrition and morbidity and mortality, the role of other factors in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in for Renal Nutrition and Metabolism that another meeting should be convened. Accordingly, the next Internachronic renal failure, the potential contributions of nutrients and growth factors to erythropoiesis and the hematotional Congress of this Society will take place on July 6–8, 2000 in Lyon, France. The presidents of this next poietic response to erythropoietin, mechanisms of uremic toxicity, and assessment and treatment of nutritional discongress are Professor Denis Fouque and Professor William E. Mitch. orders in chronic renal failure.","PeriodicalId":18722,"journal":{"name":"Mineral and electrolyte metabolism","volume":"48 1","pages":"215 - 215"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87805091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides excellent results in terms of morbidity and mortality. The better survival than usually reported on shorter dialysis is mainly due to lower cardiovascular mortality. The nutritional state of the patient is good, as well as the correction of anemia with low doses of EPO. But the main feature concerns blood pressure; hypertension is very well controlled without need for antihypertensive medications. The gentle ultrafiltration provided by a long session time associated with a low salt diet and a moderate interdialytic weight gain allows for normalization of the extracellular fluid space in most patients (dry weight) without important intradialytic morbidity. This low salt diet has paradoxically been forgotten in recent years while shortened dialysis time renders it more necessary than ever.</p>","PeriodicalId":18722,"journal":{"name":"Mineral and electrolyte metabolism","volume":"25 4-6","pages":"391-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000057480","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21535101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whereas some of the mechanisms that are being discussed in the atherogenesis of chronic renal failure are well established, many others remain hypothetical at present. One of the main reasons is that no long-term, well-controlled studies are available in this area which would have systematically tested the importance of factors such as high blood pressure, via the use of antihypertensive drugs, or disturbances of lipoprotein metabolism, via the use of lipid-lowering medications. Current clinical practice as to the use of the latter has been extensively reviewed in a recent meta-analysis by Massy et al. [69]. The majority of studies have been limited to relating hemodynamic or metabolic parameters to parameters of ischemia. Controlled long-term studies are required to reach valid conclusions on the implications of the numerous factors which theoretically may play a role in the atherosclerotic complications of chronic renal failure patients.</p>","PeriodicalId":18722,"journal":{"name":"Mineral and electrolyte metabolism","volume":"25 4-6","pages":"251-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1159/000057456","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21535295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
