However, traditional inorganic depressants such as sodium silicate have the disadvantages of high dosage, environmental pollution, and being non-efficient, which leads to a growing interest in eco-friendly and effective organic alternatives. In this study, a polysaccharide, dextrin, was used as a green depressant for the flotation separation of scheelite from calcite. Micro-flotation experiments indicated that dextrin selectively depressed calcite at natural pH yet scheelite remained floatable using sodium oleate (NaOL) as a collector. Adsorption density and zeta potential results indicated that dextrin was preferentially adsorbed on the calcite surface and prevented the subsequent NaOL from adsorption. By contrast, dextrin had a weak interaction with scheelite, allowing NaOL to be adsorbed on the scheelite surface. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the Ca2+ active sites on the calcite surface interacted with -OH groups on the carbon ring of dextrin. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests confirmed the chemical interaction between -OH groups in dextrin and Ca2+ active sites on the mineral surfaces, and importantly, the interaction was much stronger for calcite than for scheelite.KEYWORDS: Dextrindepressantgreen chemicalflotation separationscheelitecalcite Credit authorship contribution statementWei Yao and Yue Wu: Conceptualization, Methodology, Data curation, Formal analysis, Investigation, Writing – original draft. This study investigated the use of milled battery casing steel as the abrasive media in an attrition process, termed semi-autogenous attrition (SAA). The process aims to increase the liberation of the cathode materials, which are attached to other battery components, and also to release the agglomerated particles. The experimental parameters were pulp density, agitating speed and retention time. The performance of the SAA process was compared to wet sieving and attrition with agitation only. The optimum SAA conditions liberated 20% more cathode material to the <180 mm fraction and contained 90% Co with <2 wt% of contaminants (Al, Fe, and Cu). The results show that SAA can replace secondary milling. Moreover, the casing steel is a reliable abrasive media, which is already available in the system and easily separated from the cathode material. The casing steel can also be reused for multiple SAA.","PeriodicalId":18678,"journal":{"name":"Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Review","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134885099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the limited availability of its (vanadium) primary resources has raised concerns of supply security. In view of the criticality, recycling vanadium from secondary resources has been identified as a vital supply alternative. This article thus presents a comprehensive overview of metallurgical processes used in the recycling of vanadium from a variety of secondary resources, including spent HDS catalyst, spent SCR catalyst, fly ash, red mud, Bayer’s sludge, alloy scrap, tailings, etc. First, the physicochemical characteristics of these secondary resources are emphasized. Understanding the characteristics of vanadium-bearing secondary resources is important as it determines the recycling route. The metallurgical recycling processes of vanadium, which include aqueous- and thermal processes are discussed in depth, along with the theoretical backgrounds and fundamentals of each process. Also discussed are the industrial-scale processes and trend in research and development (R&D) for the respective secondary resources. Besides highlighting the status of recycling processes, the article also provides prospective directions for such resources.KEYWORDS: Vanadiumrecyclingsecondary resourcesaqueous processthermal process Disclosure statementNo potential conflict of interest was reported by the author(s).Supplementary materialSupplemental data for this article can be accessed online at https://doi.org/10.1080/08827508.2023.2243007.Additional informationFundingThis research was supported by the Basic Research Project [GP2022-010, 23-3212-1] of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT of Korea.","PeriodicalId":18678,"journal":{"name":"Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Review","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134970232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
