Growth rate, calcification rate, particulate organic carbon pro- duction, particulate organic nitrogen production, and the ratio of aberrant coccoliths to normal coccoliths were deter- mined. None of these parameters showed a trend over the range of nitrate concentrations tested. It is concluded that high nitrate concentrations, typical for culture media like f/2, do not affect morphogenesis of coccoliths, nor do they affect the production of particulate organic carbon or nitrogen in this strain.","PeriodicalId":186533,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nannoplankton Research","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127038494","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

C. murrayi typicall y has monomorphic body-cocco liths, but the new specimen bore several types of body-coccolith : at least two types of rhombolith, and a narrow, elliptical coccolith new to sc ience. This latter type is not rhombic like the others, but shares several rhombolith features. However, it dilfcrs by being longer, relatively flattent:d, slight ly twisted, and with distally-pointed ends. Although it is poss ib le th at the s ingle specimen rcprest:nts a coccospherc composed mainl y of ma lformed coccol iths, it is sugges ted here that the new coccolith type may be evidence of an alternate phase. As thousands of onl y rhombolith-bearing coccospheres have been previously observed by coccolithophorid workers, this new coccolith type may be produced for only a short duration.","PeriodicalId":186533,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nannoplankton Research","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127298664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The investigated core mainly consists of nannofossil-/foraminifera-bearing mud, sapropel layers SI to SS/6 (except S2), and tephra layers. A subtropical coccolitb association was recognised in sapropels SI, S4, SS, SS/6, while a temperate one characterises S3. A reversal in dominance between Gephyrompse< muelleme and Emilie<nie< huxleyi was observed in sapropel S3 at 256cm subdepth. A significantly lower coccolith diversity was observed in the sapropel and tephra layers themselves, as in the foraminiferal mud, probably because of the influence of anoxic conditions, including bacterial activity, or ash-falls on the coccolith assemblages. In addition, a moderate to intensive corrosion characterises the nannofossils in the bioturbated upper part of some sapropels.","PeriodicalId":186533,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nannoplankton Research","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126973480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Towards the central (abyssal) portion of the SCS, at depths below the inferred lysocline and the calcite compensation depth, F. profunda abundance values in the surface sediments reach >80%. An experiment, involving the use of an acidic solution in the preparation of smear-slides, showed an apparent increase in F. profunda abundance relative to the other taxa present in the original sample. F. profunda, therefore, is herein proposed as a dissolution-resistant species.","PeriodicalId":186533,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nannoplankton Research","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130676163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most studies have considered the Danian sediments to be mostly missing. Another hypothesis suggests that a conglomerate represents the contact between the Cretaceous and Paleogene. We examined the boundary succession of the Deramazan section in the Sulaimani area (NE Iraq) in order to determine the calcareous nannofossil assemblages and address the biostratigraphy around the boundary. The rock strata in the studied section are characterised by alternations of olive-green to greenish-grey sandstone, siltstone, shale and marlstone interlayers in both the Tanjero (Upper Campanian–Maastrichtian) and overlying Kolosh (Paleocene–Lower Eocene) Formations. The upper part of the section includes a thick conglomerate bed. We found that deposition across the boundary was essentially continuous, with no discernible break in sedimentation. The base of Zone NP1 (base of the Kolosh Formation) was identified by the bases of Biantholithus sparsus , Cruciplacolithus spp. and Coccolithus pelagicus , plus an acme of Cervisiella operculata , which seems to indicate no hiatus. There is some reworking of Cretaceous taxa above the boundary, into NP1 and NP2.
