The evolution of these lineages has been extensively studied within the petroleum industry, in particular BP America Inc. and its heritage companies, due to their considerable utility in the deep-water Gulf of Mexico. This study presents their biostratigraphic usage and taxonomic concepts for the Upper Miocene-Lower Pliocene interval (NN8-NN14). They are further defined utilizing astronomically “tuned” sediments from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 154 (western equatorial Atlantic), yielding 42 primary calibrated nannfossil events. Based on these results, we divide Zone NN12 (Martini, 1971) into two new Subzones (NN12a & b) and emend its top and base. Additionally, the taxonomy and stratigraphic distribution of Amauroliths, Ceratoliths, and theD. quinqueramus lineage are clarified. Three newAmaurolith and Ceratolith taxa are described, A. brevigracilis, C. apiculus and C. cornulum as well as eleven new species of Discoaster: D. abrachiatus, D. astellaris, D. compactus, D. consutus, D. explicatus, D. gemmulatus, D. hexaramus, D. newellii, D. prolixus, D. tetracladus and D. vinsonii. Baumann","doi":"10.58998/jnr2149","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.58998/jnr2149","url":null,"abstract":"The flux of coccoliths from a one-year-moored sediment trap (March, 1988 to March, 1989) off Cape Blanc, NW Africa (20 ̊45’N, 19 ̊44’W) was studied. Coccolith flux was at a minimum during spring and fall. The minimum flux (51x107 coccoliths m-2d-1) in fall (September) corresponds to a strong decrease in nutrient content of the surface-waters. In winter, coccolith flux reached maximum values (384x107 coccoliths m-2d-1). At that time, insolation, wind velocity, and sea-surface temperature had average values, indicating average nutrient content and average light penetration into surface-waters. Detailed morphometric measurements were the basis for more precise estimations of the coccolith-derived carbonate content of the settled particles. Numerically significant taxa (Emiliania huxleyi, Florisphaera profunda, Gephyrocapsa oceanica), as well as low flux of large taxa, such as Helicosphaera carteri, Coccolithus pelagicus and Calcidiscus leptoporus, mainly form the coccolith carbonate contribution, which adds up to 13.32mg m-2d-1 (3.9-22.8mg m-2d-1), with a relative contribution of coccoliths to the total carbonate flux of 18% (7-35%). The morphometric measurements further revealed a bimodal distribution of F. profunda allowing separation of two morphotypes, F. profunda var. profunda and F. profunda var. elongata. The modern sediment-trap assemblage revealed a good correspondence with respect to coccolith flux (accumulation), species composition and the coccolith-derived carbonate content with the underlying Holocene surface sediment.","PeriodicalId":186533,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Nannoplankton Research","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126263985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
