Enron, one of the most profitable companies in the USA in 1990s, experienced a completely unprecedented disaster and the ensuing investigations revealed that a lack of ethical integrity among the high officials was one of the most crucial reasons for the downfall of such an established company. Shortly after Enron collapse, a number of companies in different countries faced similar consequences and a crucial factor that they all appeared to share was unethical practices. The core aim of this study is to explore how the think-tanks in the corporate world made a quick response regarding the development of the ethical practices within the activities of corporations and how ethics gained greater magnitude within the administration of business activities. To achieve this aim, we undertook a comprehensive content analysis of the relevant secondary data substantiated by a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) attended by academics working in the field of corporate governance, in order to gain relevant insights in the study objectives. The scholarly views of the individuals who participated in the FGD, we believe, can add value to our results by enriching the study. The study findings suggest that the downfall of Enron immediately and hugely contributed towards raising the profile of ethics and the introduction of a series of ethical codes regarding corporate performances.","PeriodicalId":185999,"journal":{"name":"Bangladesh Political Science Review","volume":"52 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141235737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These two countries rely on each other for their common strategic interests, such as security and development. It is widely perceived that Indo-Bangla relations are currently at their peak, and that these two countries are jointly moving forward for their mutual benefit. By reviewing the secondary literature for the purpose of conducting an institutional analysis, however, this article will critically analyze this relationship in a changing reality, that comprises the rise of Hindutva, China’s growing influence in South Asia, and the Rohingya crisis, which have causing simultaneously disadvantaged positions for both India and Bangladesh, the latter having been dominated by India historically. Thus, each of these dimensions might potentially turn positive aspects of the Indo-Bangla relations into negative ones, and Delhi must address Bangladesh’s concerns meaningfully in order to safeguard its geopolitical interests.","PeriodicalId":185999,"journal":{"name":"Bangladesh Political Science Review","volume":"11 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141229289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bangladesh has been practicing democracy for more than three decades and has enjoyed a period of relative stability for more than a decade. This emerging economy of South Asia has been witnessing a noticeable development in its business sector, which constitutes several industries across the country. As a parliamentary form of governance has now been in place for a period of time, a number of business leaders, primarily the owners of businesses in Bangladesh, have begun to engage in politics more actively than was the case previously. In Bangladesh, politics was formerly predominantly controlled by veteran politicians coming from the root level of the political parties, but now an evident transformation has occurred. This article aims to identify the influence of business leaders on policymaking. As policies ultimately determine the future of employees, who are also the citizens of Bangladesh, this whole issue clearly requires a close examination. The article employs secondary data in order to analyze the relationship between the business owners’ involvement in politics and the changes that have taken place as a result of this. As business and politics work hand in hand on a global scale, the author explains the potential opportunities and challenges that this paradigm shift will create for Bangladesh.","PeriodicalId":185999,"journal":{"name":"Bangladesh Political Science Review","volume":"1 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141229258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The members of the affected community, however, appear to have a poor understanding of the nature of land subsidence and its consequences. This study, therefore, aims to assess the community members’ understanding of as well as the actions that they take to solve problems of this nature in the rural, southwestern coastal zone of Bangladesh. A qualitative comparative case study approach was employed in this study, where two rural communities from the southwestern coastal districts were selected as the cases. By subjecting the data to thematic analysis, the study found that, although a few civil society members and activists are, to some extent, aware of the occurrence of land subsidence and its linkage with waterlogging, however, most of the members of the communities lack adequate knowledge or an understanding about the nature, causes and consequences of the land subsidence issue and its connection to the waterlogging problem in their locality. Thus, it was found that they take no or very few measures to cope with the risk of land subsidence. The study’s findings imply that the policymakers should formulate a strategy for making the members of the community aware of the nature, causes, and consequences of land subsidence issues.","PeriodicalId":185999,"journal":{"name":"Bangladesh Political Science Review","volume":"7 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141233609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In every country in the world, however, there exists a phenomenon known as a tax gap; i.e., not all of the people who are supposed to pay tax on their income are doing so. Why some pay taxes while others decide not to comply with the mandatory legal requirements to do so remains a question that has not yet been answered in full. Income tax is multidisciplinary in nature: economics, psychology, law, accounting, political economy, sociology, public sector management, etc; all come into play to explain why some people pay their taxes while others decide not to. The economic approach attempts to understand tax compliance from the perspective of the tax gap, while the psychological approach is based on exploring the citizens’ voluntary willingness to act not only withing the letter of the income tax law but also within its spirit. This paper attempts to provide an overview of the current ‘Tax Compliance’ literature, from the neo-classical economic deterrence models to the behavioural economics models and demonstrate the limitations of the tax compliance literature from the perspective of developing countries.","PeriodicalId":185999,"journal":{"name":"Bangladesh Political Science Review","volume":"22 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141233703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary principle of community policing is to create a harmonious communal life via joint efforts on the part of both the police and the community. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of community policing in Bangladesh in terms of its philosophy, based on secondary data sources. The data were described using descriptive and qualitative methodologies. The study found that many different methods of community policing have been applied in Bangladesh, to date, but that, in its contemporary form, community policing was first deployed in 1990 in Bangladesh’s Mymensing district. Currently, community policing is being practiced in many districts throughout Bangladesh, without any reference to the philosophical aspects of community policing, such as collaboration, organizational reform, and problem-solving. To secure the safety of the community, as well as to maintain order with in, the philosophical component of community policing in Bangladesh should be examined.","PeriodicalId":185999,"journal":{"name":"Bangladesh Political Science Review","volume":"11 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141235165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, they have begun to be criticized by the proponents of more orthodox Islamic revivalism. Although the Sufis’ relationship with the revivalists have been studied from a myriad of perspectives, the former’s relationship with the English-educated middle class of Bengal has so far remained unexamined. By analysing Pir-related literary works in the Bangla language, this article argues that Sufi-Pirs were, in the main, negatively portrayed in the dominant discourse that prevailed among the more educated sections of society in Bengal (now Bangladesh). In the face of such negative portrayals, some recent Sufis have adopted counterstrategies to prevent further assaults on their image by popular authors and activists.","PeriodicalId":185999,"journal":{"name":"Bangladesh Political Science Review","volume":"10 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141229648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dispute, which was supposed to be resolved in 2011, remains unresolved, due to disagreement on both sides. The political parties in Bangladesh have fostered a narrative, which persuaded the current Awami regime to attract China’s investment, which could serve as a reminder to India of the urgent need to resolve the River Teesta dispute. This study discusses how the discursive power fostered in Bangladesh may jeopardize the Indo-Bangla relations. By applying deductive logic based on document analysis, this study argues that India and Bangladesh should hasten to resolve this most vexing River Teesta-sharing issue, thus reducing an irritant at the bilateral level and boosting river water cooperation at a more general level.","PeriodicalId":185999,"journal":{"name":"Bangladesh Political Science Review","volume":"4 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141233616","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to explore the nature of the political socialization of students at the University of Dhaka. In order to collect the primary data, 400 students from four faculties of the University of Dhaka were surveyed purposively. The study argues that the students at the University of Dhaka are politically socialized, although their degree of political socialization varies among the students according to whether their educational background is in the arts, social sciences, science, or business. Of all the agents, the media impacts the most on the process of students’ political socialization. The study found that most of the students at this university possess the cognitive, affective, and evaluative capacities to understand political issues and objectives. The media, their family, and the university play prominent roles in developing the students’ attitudes and knowledge about political objects and issues. The findings indicate that the media play the most influential role in generating cognitive, affective, and evaluative attitudes and orientations towards the political leaders and political institutions.","PeriodicalId":185999,"journal":{"name":"Bangladesh Political Science Review","volume":"56 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141232138","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research question of this paper is: do the scholars working in the field of comparative regionalism present a comprehensive, intelligible framework for studying regionalism based on a common conceptualization of the essential ideas and identification of the general factors required for successful regional integration in different settings? By reviewing the primary literature, this paper argues that the literature in the field of comparative regionalism lacks a coherent framework for facilitating the study of regional integration in different settings. This deficiency is due to a failure to conceptualize these fundamental phenomena from a general perspective and identify the common factors that affect successful regional integration.","PeriodicalId":185999,"journal":{"name":"Bangladesh Political Science Review","volume":"5 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141233655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
