Objective: To investigate whether stroke patients recuperating at home complied with prescribed Unsupervised Home Exercise Programme (UHEP) and what demographic characteristics were associated with non-compliance. Methods: We administered questionnaires assessing full compliance and demographic characteristics of 108 consenting stroke patients attending the Outpatient Physiotherapy Clinics of two hospitals in Kano, Nigeria. Results: Seventy-four percent of the participants were non-compliant with their UHEP. Stroke over one year with Odds Ratio (OR) = 2.1, 95% CI=1.823-3.315, polygamy (OR=3.1, 95% CI=2.661-5.012), occupying rented apartment (OR=10.8, 95% CI=2.037-28.319) and living with non-family members (OR=4.6, 95% CI=1.324-11.765) were significant predictors of non-compliance while gender, age group, marital status, education, monthly income and building type were not significant predictors (P>0.05).Conclusions: Most patients did not comply with their UHEP. Some of the socio-demographic factors responsible were duration of the stroke above one year, polygamy, living in rented apartment and with non-family members. Risk factors for non-compliance should be adequately considered when planning UHEP for stroke patients in order to enhance compliance.

Exercise is being used simultaneously with drugs and it has been observed to have influence on the pharmacokinetic of drugs. Similarly, most individual utilizes both exercise and drugs to maintain good health and physical fitness. Exercises and drugs play important roles in control of pain, obesity, weakness, protection against degenerative diseases, improving cardiovascular endurance and respiratory efficiency. Just like drugs, it stimulates a healing response that couples both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mechanisms to repair, regenerate, and grow stronger tissues. There are evidences that both drugs and exercise play the same roles in some diseases; hence, there is likelihood of interactions in the physiological responses of the body. Exercise is accessible, safe, and an inexpensive anti-inflammatory medicine and it also has web-like interactions in the body unlike drugs that has a single targeted action. Physiotherapists utilize exercises in the management of conditions such as osteoarthritis, stroke, hypertension, diabetes and cardiac diseases; and most of the subjects are equally on drugs. This review showed that exercises affect pharmacokinetic variables of drugs resulting in either positive or negative influence depending on the type of drugs, exercises intensity, duration and excretory organ.

There is little data available on injuries sustained by physical therapists in Nigeria. \u0000Objective: This sfudy was carried out to detennine the nature, prevalence, job risk factors and consequences of occupational injuries with particular focus on musculoskeletal injuries experienced by physical therapists in the south western part of Nigeria. \u0000Methods: A hundred copies, self administered questionnaire composed of thirty (30) close-ended questions were administered to physical therapists working in hospitals and private clinics. Questions included occupational history of the physical therapists; duration of injury; body parts affected; activities that aggravate symptoms; patients predominantly treated; management and preventive strategies. The data were analysed using descriptive analysis. \u0000Results: Seventy-eight percent (78%) of the physical therapists had past histories of occupational injuries. The most prevalent injured body parts were the lower back (45.2%), wrist and hand (26%) mid back (10.6%) and neck (6.7%). The highest job risk factors were manual therapy techniques (20.9%), transferring patients (13.8%) and static position (12.2%). Stroke (31.7%) and low back (28.2%) patients were predominantly treated. Activities that cause re-injury include manual technique and repetitive tasks. Muscle strain was the commonest type of injury (55%), while fracture was the least (1 %). \u0000Conclusion: This study concluded that occupational injury was high among selected physical therapists in the South West of Nigeria.
