It was widely reinforced by chemical education data. On the otherhand there was no data for the consequences in biochemistry learning. OBJECTIVE Weproposed the construction of an Aminoacid Paper Electrophoresis software as a tool forChemical Equilibrium teaching and learning which aims to integrate the representationallevels, being macroscopic, microscopic and symbolic in a way to evidence to student thedynamic character of the equilibrium phenomena. It attenuates misconceptions andreduces impairments on biochemistry learning. Although the simulator is based onclassical biochemistry topic it is designed to deal with chemical equilibrium concepts in thecontext of biochemistry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The software is an PaperElectrophoresis Simulator programmed in HTML5 language. It guides the student stepstoward the simulation showing the technique fundamentals and variables allowing tochoose aminoacids in a list, as well as build even tetrapeptides and run even four samplesin a single simulation after what is defined a pH for simulation. The simulation results areshown in a depiction of a paper electrophoresis device (macroscopic) the speciesproportion in the medium based on the Handerson-Hasselbalch formula (symbolic) and thespecies charge change based on the medium pH (microscopic). All activities are guided bya task list based on previous diagnostic on chemical equilibrium misconceptions.RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Results were based on observation of students classdiscussion and survey. Many of previously diagnosed misconceptions were attenuated intests of chemical equilibrium falling from a 72% to 35% error average; and a studentssurvey agreed with simulator objectives (90%), ease of use (94%), chemicalrepresentations straightness (82%), simulation results (71%) integration ofrepresentational levels (87%). The Brazil exhibits strong inequalities regarding the distribution of wealth, access to cultural assets and appropriation of scientific and technological knowledge. Each Brazilian should have the opportunity to acquire a basic knowledge of science and its operation that allow them to understand their environment and expand their professional opportunities. However, the overall performance of Brazilian students in science and math is bad. The basic science education has, most often, few resources and is discouraging, with little appreciation of experimentation, interdisciplinarity and creativity. Beside the shortage of science teachers, especially teachers with good formation, predominate poor wage and working conditions, and deficiencies in instructional materials and laboratories. If there was a significant expansion in access to basic education, the challenge remains to improve their quality. According to the last National Conference of STI, there is need of a profound educational reform at all levels, in particular with regard to science education. Already, the popularization of science can be an important tool for the construction of scientific culture and refinement of the formal teaching instrument. However, we still lack a comprehensive and adequate public policy to her intended. Clearly, in recent decades, an increase in scientific publication occurred: creating science centers and museums; greater media presence; use of the internet and social networks; outreach events, such as the National Week of CT. But the scenario is shown still fragile and limited to broad swathes of Brazilians without access to scientific education and qualified information on CT. In this presentation, from a general diagnosis of the situation, some of the main challenges related to education and popularization of science in the country will address herself.","PeriodicalId":185758,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biochemistry Education","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129325579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wikipedia emerged in the mid-2000s promoting a big change compared to otherencyclopedias, mainly because it is in digital form and allow its users to create and editinformation contained therein. Due to its easiness of use and readiness, it gainedprominence as a research resource and tool. By doing research on biochemistry usingWikipedia, we can see a vast amount of content that assists in learning, however givingspace for questions recurring about its reliability. OBJECTIVES: The research aims toverify if the information about Biochemistry found on Wikipedia are consistent to thosefound in the book \"Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry\" and present its references.MATERIAL AND METHODS: In order to evaluate selected topics in the biochemistry suchas proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids; the rates of Wikipedia and the bookwere compared and also the concepts presented in each subject in order to analyze theapproach and content of information that the Wiki uses. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:Considering only the indices, it is possible to say that the contents found in the Wiki listthe same issues that the book addresses, but organization is different. It also featuresseveral references from books of Biochemistry. When comparing the informationcontained in Wikipedia, we realize that they are in accordance with those found in thebook, but in a superficial way, making new sources of knowledge necessary to delve intothe content. CONCLUSIONS: Wikipedia can and should be used as an introductory toolfor acquiring knowledge about biochemistry. However, like any source of consultation, theWiki is not able to replace all other sources of reference since its approaches are brief,making the studies easily conducted and reaching only superficial levels.","PeriodicalId":185758,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biochemistry Education","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130313043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Each technology has been carefully researched and framed in the context of its potential impact on higher education. Within the Horizon Project there are currently seven categories of technologies, tools, and strategies for their use that the NMC monitors continuously. All they have the potential to foster real changes in education, particularly in the development of progressive pedagogies and learning strategies; the organization of teachers’ work; and the arrangement and delivery of content. Following the recommendations of NMC experts panel, we design an application named Augmented Reality Metabolic Pathways (ARMET) in order to improve motivation and to promote student interactivity to the development of skills needed to learn the metabolic pathways. Materials and methods: The ARMET app was developed using Unity, 3D molecules obtained from Protein Data Bank and ChemSpider-chemical structure database, the usage data are stored into a database (MySQL) and are analyzed using the statistical software R. Results and conclusions: ARMET mixes several technologies out of seven categories recommend in the NMC Horizon Report: Mobile app, Bring Your Own Device, Flipped Classroom, Learning Analytics and Augmented Reality. The principal criterion for the inclusion of those technologies into the app was its potential relevance to teaching and learning biochemistry. ARMET is available for iOS and Android platforms, and includes PDF files with a set of cards, the game board and classroom worksheet’s. The students and teachers can register for free. Teachers can create classes and track student performance. ARMET collects data for personalizing learning experiences addressing the challenge to build better pedagogical tools to establish effective formative assessment for metabolism teaching.","PeriodicalId":185758,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biochemistry Education","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123684103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ao iniciar a disciplina (pre-teste) e apos 4 dias de atividades (pos-teste) os alunos assinalaram 5 caracteristicas positivas e negativas mais importantes de um professor de uma lista com 21 caracteristicas de cada um. As diferencas entre pre e pos-teste foram comparadas entre si e com as respostas de um grupo controle de 20 alunos do mesmo programa que nao haviam cursado a disciplina. As diferencas entre pre e pos-teste foram similares nas 5 turmas e significativamente maiores em relacao ao controle. Em relacao as caracteristicas positivas do professor, diminuiu no pos-teste a importância de o professor ser dinâmico e bom comunicador, tendo aumentado a de ser coerente. Quanto as caracteristicas negativas do professor houve aumento do autoritarismo, diminuindo competencia, desinteresse e incoerencia. Una de las salidas de los egresados en Bioquimica es la docencia en secundaria, por lo que nos planteamos en la asignatura de Laboratorio de Instrumentacion Bioquimica desarrollar una actividad en la que los alumnos disenaran practicas de laboratorio que puedan realizar alumnos de secundaria con materiales caseros o faciles de conseguir. Estas actividades se recogieron en un blog, para que pudieran ser utilizadas por profesores de secundaria y aquellas personas interesadas en la ciencia. Durante el desarrollo de la asignatura los alumnos en grupos de 4 bajo la supervision del profesor, prepararon el material y presentaron la practica escogida a sus companeros. Los alumnos propusieron las siguientes actividades que han sido filmadas y recogidas en el blog: fabricacion de jabon, estudios de dispersion de colorantes con detergentes, reaccion luminiscente, confeccion de un indicador de pH con col lombarda, la reaccion arco iris (reduccion del permanganato potasico con azucar), simulacion de sangre con ferrocianuro potasico, extraccion de cafeina de una bebida energetica, extraccion de ADN de frutas y verduras, fabricacion de una crema hidratante, fabricacion de nitrato de celulosa, demostracion de la fotosintesis, freir un huevo con alcohol y demostracion de los efectos nocivos del tabaco. La respuesta del alumnado fue entusiasta y motivadora, dandose cuenta al final de las practicas de que eran capaces de preparar este tipo de actividades y que esta podia servir para ayudar a otros estudiantes interesados por la ciencia y de esta manera motivarles para estudiar el grado de Bioquimica. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three groups of students (50 each) were evaluated. Two of them were submitted to different simulatory activities,such as: a) visiting the virtual laboratory of Utah University (USA) to understand gel electrophoresis and polymerasechain reaction (PCR) techniques, b) extracting DNA from oral mucosa by means of a homemade protocol, c) investigating simulatory paternity tests, d) proposing their own microarrays by painting them on paper and then interpreted the results according to the colors, e) designing primers (small fragments of DNA to PCR) with the free software Primer3 and testing them in silico PCR. The third group of students was only submitted to oral theoretical classes about all these themes. The progress of the understanding was qualitatively evaluated and compared by the analysis of questionnaires. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The groups submitted to the virtual classes were responsive during the development of activities and had a better performance in the examinations than the group that had only theoretical classes, showing better comprehension about the themes. Their greatest difficult was the limitation in the English language to interact with the websites (they often asked about an alternative site in Portuguese). The program was an attempt to assume both academic and biotechnology sectors, preparing capable professionals for the development of new products and biochemical process. Our initial challenge came with the ingress of the first classes bringing doubts related to their formation and action profiles, sometimes confused with clinical analysts or pharmacists. Lecture series with professionals was used to demonstrate the present scenario with a growing market share, instigating discussions about the pedagogic project. The secondchallenge was the student’s pressure to recognition of under graduation programby the Brazilian Education Ministry (MEC) and the biochemical professional recognition by one Regional Council. The bachelor degree was recognized by the MEC in 2004 and the Regional Council of Chemistry became our major partner. The  success of the initiative of the UFV has been giving good results such as the participation in the formation process of the Bachelor Degree in Biochemistry of the Federal University of Sao Joao Del Rei (UFSJ) and stimulated the creation of another biochemistry course at State University of Maringa (UEM). The success of our students in Phd programs spread in Brazil evidences the quality of Biochemistry bachelors from UFV. Now the egresses have been recognized by biochemistry and biotechnology industry. However we still face problems with impaired recognition in many federal concourses that do not recognize the Biochemist as a chemistry and biotechnology professional. With high expectative, we wait that the biochemistry bachelordegree spreads widely in the country making possible the opening of new opportunities in all ways.","PeriodicalId":185758,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biochemistry Education","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125835954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
