A low-cost accurate measurement system was realized, based on an embedded microcontroller and exploiting two inductive probes facing each other. Such system was designed to operate with moving plates, passing through the probe assembly mounted in a fixed position. The developed system was properly calibrated, following a procedure implemented ad hoc, and its performance was assessed using sample ferromagnetic test objects. The achieved accuracy of the thickness estimation is about 20 μm at 2 readings/s measurement speed. The accuracy of the system does not depend on the type of ferromagnetic material (i.e on the value of the magnetic permeability, provided it is large). Afterwards, an experimental campaign was conducted, characterizing the thickness of solid and laser beam machined ferromagnetic slabs.","PeriodicalId":185183,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Systems Engineering (ISSE)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133589411","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Technical systems in particular are undergoing major changes. Tomorrow’s systems are characterized by their autonomy, high level of interconnection, and socio-technical interfaces. These systems can no longer be developed by one engineering discipline alone, but require interdisciplinary development teams. This type of development requires a high degree of collaboration, communication, and orchestration. Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) supports engineers in the interdisciplinary development of future systems. MBSE uses models to generate a unified and complete view of the system. This allows changes to be easily tracked and the visualization helps to understand the system discipline-independent. The creation of these models still requires high effort. New AI technologies can be used to derive potential assistant systems in the context of MBSE. This paper shows realized examples of AI-based assistance systems. They are motivated by the experience of using MBSE in research and development projects with high complexity and inter-disciplinarity. The presented results are defined and first prototypically realized assistance within student projects.","PeriodicalId":185183,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Systems Engineering (ISSE)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127199770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is manifested by an inability of the heart to pump enough blood in the circulatory system to meet the body’s need of oxygenated blood. For many patients who have not responded to drug treatments, the only alternative is a heart transplantation. While the patient is waiting for a donor heart, he/she must be kept alive comfortably until a donor heart becomes available. Clearly, prolonging life is relevant only if the patient’s quality of life is improved. One approach to accomplish this goal is to implant a mechanical pump (known as a Left Ventricular Assist Device or LVAD) whose purpose is to help the heart by pumping an additional amount of blood in the circulatory system to supplement the amount of blood pumped by the heart. In this paper, we propose a novel approach in which the heart and the LVAD are considered as a system of systems (SoS), one biological and the other mechanical, that together must work in tandem as an integrated SoS to accomplish the difficult task of keeping the patient alive while also providing him/her with a comfortable quality of life. Without this SoS working properly and responding to the patient’s changing needs, the patient will not survive. In this paper, we review the various components of this SoS and explore the challenges and benefits of this new technology in treating heart failure patients.","PeriodicalId":185183,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Systems Engineering (ISSE)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127035703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, SoS engineering goes beyond addressing requirements to addressing capabilities. Due to the independence of the constituent systems, capability is formed by complex interdependence of legacy systems. It is also subject to uncertainty of the evolutionary development of the SoS, making it important to not only see the bigger picture but to plan for the changing capability patterns in the life of an SoS. This study looks at the body of knowledge surrounding definitions, support systems and practices around the concept of capability in the context of SoS. The results show; context dependent nature of the definition of capability, country-specific support systems, ongoing efforts to form more robust frameworks and dominant establishment of this theme in the defense sector.","PeriodicalId":185183,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Systems Engineering (ISSE)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127042382","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Change detection of aged infrastructure such as roads and ports by using satellite remote sensing has been introduced to judge the needs for their maintenance, however, it has the challenges of rapidity, accuracy and certainty of the observed data. To cover the weakness of remote sensing, reporting from citizens (so called \"citizen sensors\") which detect the local or micro changes/damages of the infrastructure could work. By matching the remote and citizen sensing data, we could verify and improve the certainty of the observation results. However, there is a challenges of citizen sensing system: incentives and quality control. Upon this problem recognition, this study aims to develop the model to provide incentives to citizens to collect and report the quality data by using the \"community currency\" system. \"Community currency\" is a tool to covert the unseen values in the community into the monetary values (such as discounts points or rewards that could be used in the local shopping) to change the behavior of citizens to take such unvalued actions. This paper shows the results of developed model to calculate the reasonable and workable monetary value (rewards) to motivate citizens to collect and report the changes of the community infrastructure (e.g., micro damages of the roads surface) with required quality. The main research question was optimization of the calculation/conversion model to value the citizen sensors. For this, the model has taken the approach to value the expected cost reduction and extra benefits (i.e., damage avoidance) that could not be obtained without citizen sensing (assuming the existing surveying works by local authorities). The result also shows the community currency system with the developed model could enhance the quantity and quality of the citizen sensing data.","PeriodicalId":185183,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Systems Engineering (ISSE)","volume":"235 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132522093","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is accompanied by the trend towards software-intensive avionics systems due to the requirement for complex and computationally expensive algorithms. Considering the successful application of agile developments in the software domain, one might conclude that the agile paradigm would be the perfect fit to address these issues. However, for highly safety-critical domains such as aviation, multiple conflicts with the agile paradigm exist. Especially the constraint to follow rigorous and well documented processes contradicts the ideas of agile. To bridge this gap, a comprehensive and well documented, but still flexible process is necessary. Accordingly, this paper proposes a first step towards such an agile safety-guided design, by combining Model-Based Systems Engineering with the System-Theoretic Process Analysis. Particularly, focus is placed on enabling an iterative safety-guided design by providing functionality to track design changes to the corresponding safety artifacts. This automated functionality is enabled by a formalized execution of the safety analysis. At first glance, formalization sounds like a contradiction to the agile paradigm. However, we argue that formality and agility are not necessarily contradicting each other. Our theory is that moving the focus of formality from the human activities to the assisting functionality even increases overall agility. The iterative safety-guided design and resulting identification of safety improvements is demonstrated with examples of a flight assistance system.","PeriodicalId":185183,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Systems Engineering (ISSE)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124909740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes a new approach to implementing a semantic layer that allows integrating and publishing MBSE data stored in heterogeneous models in a uniform way by means of Semantic Web technologies. The tool-independent views on engineering data provided by the semantic layer enable the implementation of services for accessing, classifying, checking and reuse of federated information. High complexity of networked advanced systems is an important cause. In order to cope with high complexity, Model-Based Systems Engineering is seen as a possible approach. The Advanced Engineering Change Impact Approach – AECIA presents a model-based Engineering Change Management – ECM approach that supports a holistic propagation and impact analysis as well as the communication of engineering changes. For this purpose, practice-relevant requirements are identified and, based on these, analysis and modeling activities of the ECM approach are derived. The identified activities are grouped into activity groups that systematically support the validation of incoming change requests, the analysis and modeling of change propagation and impact, and the communication and documentation of change information for an agile engineering environment. The presented Advanced Engineering Change Impact Approach addresses the identified requirements and thus enables an iterative, agile as well as model-based engineering change management.","PeriodicalId":185183,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Systems Engineering (ISSE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129726194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Activities subsume planning, conceptualizing and designing system elements as well as creating and documenting the associated artefacts. The application of interdisciplinary engineering methodologies is required to systematically elaborate the complex system with all necessary interdependent artefacts. Historically grown from classical mechanical engineering methods, interdisciplinary engineering approaches have prevailed and led to today’s Systems Engineering methodologies. The applicability of activity-oriented engineering methodologies is limited due to the comprehensive level of detail and inherent complexity. Therefore, an artefact-oriented approach is gaining importance in industrial practice – the RFLP approach which is defined by the most relevant artefacts in system engineering: requirements, functions, logical elements, physical elements. It is understandable for developers across all disciplines. The artefact-oriented view of the RFLP approach can be a helpful complement to engineering methodologies, but misses the detailed description of linkages to engineering activities to elaborate the artefacts. Therefore, the engineer lacks a guideline to exploit the advantages of the RFLP approach and to combine them with a company-specific engineering methodology. In this paper, the RFLP approach is mapped to practically relevant engineering methodologies, extended by a new element and defined by detailed handouts. Based on a systematic analysis of shortcomings as well as on a mapping of the RFLP approach to industrially relevant engineering methodologies, the handouts for the RFLP approach are elaborated and extended by integrating the artefact verification. Subsequently, the resulting RFLPV approach is validated in an industrial case study of a window lifter for a car series. With the results of the paper, engineers are enabled to combine the artefact-oriented view of RFLPV as a complement to the activity-oriented engineering methodology.","PeriodicalId":185183,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Symposium on Systems Engineering (ISSE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121381291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
