The converter is based on the technique of multiphase control of chopping. This technique permits the augmentation of the output and of reducing the rate of harmonics. The authors present a new approach of the multiphase control based on the recurrent equations of phase currents. The technique of multiphase control, the analysis and the modeling of such a system are discussed. The study takes account of the frequency behaviour and the distortions. The experimental results, the integration of the converter to a renewable energy system are discussed.","PeriodicalId":184523,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2001. The increasing importance of power quality in a deregulated era has emphasized the importance of characterizing different phenomena that occur in voltage and current. This paper focuses on capacitor switching events, which cause a temporary variation in the fundamental frequency voltage magnitude in a medium voltage industrial distribution system. The aim of the paper is to investigate the potential use of both wavelet and fast Fourier transform to identify distinctive characteristics of capacitor switching operation. These characteristics are further utilized to determine the responsible party when transient phenomena related to capacitor switching occurs in the distribution systems. The effects of both voltage level and capacitor location in characterizing switching capacitor phenomena are examined. Based on these studies a general conclusion regarding switching operation is given.","PeriodicalId":184523,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2001. In this paper, the extracting method of faces from more than one person's facial area with a natural background is presented. The processes are executed by using human skin color and moving information, and consist of the following five stages: (1) detection of moving area; (2) extraction for skin-color areas; (3) evaluation of movement of each skin-color area; (4) extraction of facial areas from each skin-color area when movement is large; and (5) the extraction of facial areas from each skin-color area when movement is small. The moving area is first detected using the difference between two successive frames. The skin-color areas are then extracted based on the modified HSV color system from an input image. The judgment whether the movement of each skin-color area is large or not is done. The extracting process of the facial area is divided into two processes according to the moving quantity: (1) when the movement is large, the facial areas containing a neck area are extracted based on its motion information; and (2) when the movement is small, since the shape of the facial areas does not change between the successive frames, the facial areas are then clipped out based on the facial area that has already been extracted in the previous frame. The skin-color area corresponding to the facial area which is extracted from the previous frame is detected. Computer simulation using 1563 frames shows more than 89% extracting accuracy. From the experimental results, the prospects of using this method for the human face identification, image coding or the recognition of facial expressions are very encouraging.","PeriodicalId":184523,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2001. The controller is implemented by software on a microcomputer to control the unknown transfer function system of a real plant for testing the learning efficiency of self-organization and proper parameter tuning where the scaling factor (g/sub 0/, g/sub 1/) is set from an experiment corresponding with process characterization and the designer experience. The results show that the performance of this controller is improved in terms of the set point compared with the PID standard controller.","PeriodicalId":184523,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2001. The clearing of these mines takes place manually. Unfortunately, on average, for every 5000 mines to be cleared, one mine clearer is killed. A mine detector robot (MDR) is under development at the Electronic Research Center. The robot arm imitates a manual hand-prodding technique for mine detection. It inserts a sharp metal bar (probe) into the soil whose parameters, such as stiffness are unknown and vary depending on the type of soil. An explicit force control scheme is applied as the main control scheme, while an adaptive fuzzy controller is designed to deal with uncertainties and varying environment parameters. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed control scheme.","PeriodicalId":184523,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2001. In this bending process, the most complex process is due to the determination of the bend sequence and assigning proper tools for each bend. Finding the best bending sequence is itself a combination problem and this when coupled with tool selection results in a combination explosion, which clearly states that an exhaustive approach is impossible to solve the problem in a time-economic way. Moreover since human operators handle the above operation, a process that is not complex, their desire have to be considered. A genetic algorithm is used to generate the bend sequence and tool selection for each bend. It finds a feasible solution based on collision detection, a simple process and the operator's desire. We present genetic algorithms for finding the best bending sequence and tool selection for each bent, based on collision avoidance and the operators desire, we discuss our new approach towards solving it, and the ideas being implemented and are evaluated using real part data.","PeriodicalId":184523,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2001. The proposed control strategy, which is based on the frequency domain approach, is appropriate for a six-switch current source inverter rather than the fifteen switches topology that has been proposed in the literature. The algorithm used to generate the PWM pattern functions of the current source active power filter is presented. To show the effectiveness of the proposed PWM current control method, computer simulations using Matlab/Simulink/Power System Blockset are presented.","PeriodicalId":184523,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2001. Scalability of computer clusters 计算机集群的可扩展性

First, we have programmed and calibrated a PVFS simulator; using this simulator, we demonstrated that PVFS has a very good scalability where the number of nodes in the cluster is smaller than a given threshold. This threshold actually corresponds to the saturation of the network bandwidth. To go beyond this limit, we propose to use wide striping and replication in the same file system. We also propose a new data distribution technique based upon \"chained declustering\", that warranties high availability and scalability. This also allow's the system to be improved with minimal cost, without service interruption and with a minimal degradation of service. In addition, the granularity of the file system is ideal: the size of the cluster can be adjusted to the needed performances with a precision of one node. Finally, we propose a complete architecture, using cluster of clusters, where the performances are not limited by the network performances. In order to validate our file system, we use the PVFS simulator where the improvements have been implemented. The results show that the performances of the system are close to the ideal case. Once the size of the origin cluster is well defined, the total number of nodes in the system is not limited any more, and the performances increase linearly. We have also simulated an upgrade of the system, in order to measure the perturbation caused by the update of the new nodes: it is minimal and can be controlled by priority mechanisms.","PeriodicalId":184523,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2001. As the shape of the part becomes complex with many bends and the number of features in the model becomes larger, the hidden entity processing becomes slower. Optimized processing algorithms are needed to generate the orthographic views with hidden entities and feature information in order to develop competent software packages for the above application. Concepts and techniques to optimize the hidden line processing for complex sheet metal parts having large number of 3D objects, namely, faces, bend lines and other manufacturing features such as holes and forming shapes are described. The processing time required to produce results with desired accuracy has been greatly reduced by grouping the topological entities and processing the projection relationship among the objects of complex parts such as hidden line dependence, hidden line independence, and hidden line interdependence. The feature information are also optimally processed with the projection information of the 3D objects, and final views data will have feature information which are required to carry out easier inspection with original drawing data.","PeriodicalId":184523,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2001.
