The average number of blood vessels in the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model parameter was mainly employed to assess anti-angiogenic effectiveness against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-induced angiogenesis. All aqueous infusions, including GT, OG, CC, CF, HR, GT+OG, GT+CC, GT+CF, and GT+HR, showed inhibition against VEGF-induced angiogenesis in the CAM model. The infusions at a concentration of 5 µg/ml exhibited reduction in blood vessel development in different treatment groups compared to positive control. All infusion groups showed a reduction in total blood vessel length, except for OG, HR, and GT+CC, which had a similar effect (p = 0.05) as that of the control group. GT and GT+OG infusions demonstrated a significantly increased but equivalent (p = 0.05) anti-angiogenic impact as that of other infusions. The in-vivo CAM model demonstrated that all infusions reduced new blood production, with the GT and GT+OG combinations having the greatest effect.","PeriodicalId":18430,"journal":{"name":"Medicinal Plants - International Journal of Phytomedicines and Related Industries","volume":"17 1","pages":"99-105"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147921389","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Desert native flora of arid regions, possess untapped pharmacological potentials that offer locally accessible, inexpensive and safe therapeutic reliefs for mild to tragic disastrous diseases. However, the unique diversified phytochemical profile, composition and pharmacological impacts of native desert flora, responsible for their importance in health benefits is often disregarded. Desert plants and their seeds are a vast source of bioactive compounds, and understanding the phytochemical profile and pharmacological properties is necessary before adopting them in natural medicine. An investigation was carried out in selected seeds of native desert annual plants of Kuwait belonging to various families (Malva parviflora L., Phalaris minor Retz., Plantago ovata Forssk, Plantago boissieri Hausskn. & Bornm., Astragalus hauarensis Boiss., Astragalus annularis Forssk, Brassica tournefortii Gouan, Reseda arabica Boiss, Suaeda aegyptiaca (Hasselq.) Zohary and Silene villosa Forssk). Phytochemical distribution is based on the classifications of plant metabolites as tannins, phlobatannins, saponins, terpenoids, flavonoids, carotenoids, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, anthraquinones and reducing sugars, were qualitatively determined by universally accepted laboratory techniques. The results indicated the existence of tannins, saponins, and cardiac glycosides in all the ten investigated native desert plant seeds. The seeds of P. boissieri, R. arabica and S. villosa, displayed the strong presence of tannins and terpenoids, while P. boissieri and M. parviflora, strongly apprehended alkaloids. Saponins were recorded high in M. parviflora seeds, whereas cardiac glycosides in P. boissieri seeds. The presence of phytochemical constituents in the seeds of Kuwait native annual flora seemed to have prospective as the source for potential drugs or herbal formulations; however, further research arenas are required for their biological properties relating to its therapeutic effects.","PeriodicalId":18430,"journal":{"name":"Medicinal Plants - International Journal of Phytomedicines and Related Industries","volume":"17 1","pages":"60-73"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147899602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, group discussions, and field surveys. The data for different ethnobotanical indices were evaluated through quantitative methods ie Used Value (UV), Frequency of Citation (FC), Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC), Fidelity level (FD) and Informant consensus factor (ICF). A total of 68 plants, which come under 42 families, were recorded, and Fabaceae and Lamiaceae were important families, and each had 5 useful species. The UV ranged from 0.009 to 0.055. The taxa recorded with the highest used values were Ocimum tenuiflorum (UV 0.055) and Psidium guajava (UV 0.045). The RFC was recorded between 0.006 to 0.035, highest for Ocimumtenui florum (0.035), and lowest for Psidium guajava (0.029). The six species showing 100% fidelity are highly cited for commonly occurring ailments like diabetes, hypertension and, stomach aches, etc. The health disorders were categorized into 11 categories, and informant consensus factors recorded the highest for the category gastro-intestinal disorders (0.82), followed by ailments like respiratory disorders (0.81). The recorded plant species showed their rich density and are utilized in day-to-day uses. So these species should be raised in ex-situ environments. It would also help in improving the livelihoods of the local inhabitants.","PeriodicalId":18430,"journal":{"name":"Medicinal Plants - International Journal of Phytomedicines and Related Industries","volume":"17 1","pages":"165-177"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147908694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Polygonum polystachyum Wall. ex Meisn., Polygonum hydropiper L., Thymus serphyllum Linn., Fagopyrum esculentum Moench, Prunus persica (L.), and Juglans regia Linn., eaten as food by the tribal community of Bharmour District Chamba. The nutritional composition of these plants was analyzed as crude fats, potassium, sodium, crude fiber, protein, and carbohydrate. Higher nutritional composition occurred in leaves of P. hydropiper as compared to other studied species. The highest carbohydrate content was observed in P. hydropiper (12.28%), followed by P. persica (9.92%), F. esculentum (6.5%), J. regia (6.26%), and T. serphyllum (6.0%), and the lowest was in P. polystachyum (5.19%). Protein content was also highest in P. hydropiper (11.02%). Sodium and potassium contents were recorded highest in P. hydropiper, i.e., 5.49 mg/g and 25.47 mg/g, respectively. Crude fiber content in studied species ranged between 12.46 and 20.4% and was highest in P. hydropiper and lowest in P. polystachyum. J. regia had the highest fat content (2.15%). Phytochemical factors such as ascorbic acid, phenol, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, carotenoids, tocopherols, alkaloids, and phytate content were also estimated. Leaves of F. esculentum exhibited the highest amount of ascorbic acid (2.26 mg/g), phenol (20.63 mg/g), flavonoids (9.51 mg/g), and tannins (1.05 mg/g). Phytochemical analysis showed F. esculentum exhibited more phytoconstituents. We evaluated the antioxidant capacity in all the test plant species by using DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging. The highest radical scavenging activity was recorded in F. esculentum. Antibacterial activity of these wild plants towards E. coli and S. aureus was evaluated. Methanolic extract of F. esculentum had the highest antimicrobial potency towards E. coli (23.96 mm) and S. aureus (22.13 mm) in comparison to other studied species. The results of the present study suggested that collected wild plants were rich sources of nutrients, phytochemicals, antioxidants, and antibacterial properties. Therefore, these plants may contribute enormously to diet, food safety, health, and remedial benefits for Gaddis people in Western Himalayas.","PeriodicalId":18430,"journal":{"name":"Medicinal Plants - International Journal of Phytomedicines and Related Industries","volume":"17 1","pages":"178-189"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147902925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
