Three PWM control techniques that yield substantial filter size reduction for three-phase (self-commutated) rectifiers are presented and analyzed in this paper. Filters required by typical line commutated rectifiers are used as the basis for comparison. Moreover, it is shown that in addition to filter minimization two of the proposed three control techniques improve substantially the rectifier total input power factor.","PeriodicalId":184231,"journal":{"name":"1984 IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference","volume":"210 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123557811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method generates non sinusoidal input and output voltage/current waveforms and yields poor system reliability. This paper presents an upgraded method of power conversion that eliminates both problems. In addition it allows bidirectional power flow which improves efficiency and simplifies cooling requirements. The subject method requires a PWM rectifier and a PWM current source inverter. Advanced PWM techniques employed with both static converters allow the minimization of all associated passive components.","PeriodicalId":184231,"journal":{"name":"1984 IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128136397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the conventional technique injects and measures the analog signals, the proposed digital modulator injects a digital perturbation and measures the resultant duty cycle modulation. Since the duty cycle signal, derived from all feedback loops, provides the ultimate control of a switching regulator, the loop gain defined at the duty cycle modulator is unique. Employing the digital modulator, this loop gain can be measured even with a switching regulator employing the current injected control. Furthermore, this new technique overcomes false measurement problems found in the conventional technique when the feedback signal at the point where the loop gain is measured contains a pulsating nature.","PeriodicalId":184231,"journal":{"name":"1984 IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115729239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis is performed by partitioning the switching time into several states and introducing the high-frequency equivalent circuit corresponding to each state. The equivalent circuits include not only inductive or capacitive parameters but also the parameters related to the transistor's switching speed and the diode's recovery characteristics. As a result the effects of these various parameters on the surge and noise generation are made clear quantitatively. Particularly an important feature of the relationship between the transistor's switching speed and the surge and noise voltages is obtained.","PeriodicalId":184231,"journal":{"name":"1984 IEEE Power Electronics Specialists Conference","volume":"218 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115075717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Bipolar-Static-Induction-Transitor (B-SIT) with extremely fast switching times is utilized. The gate drive and the snubber circuits are presented. A new way to achieve current hysteresis control without noise problems for switching frequencies up to 100 kHz is developed. Measured overall efficiency and the transistor losses are presented. At 1 kw dc output, the total transistor switching and conduction losses are 9 watts at about 100 kHz switching frequency. The overall rectification efficiency is in a 97–98.5% range. Justification for the use of step-up converters is given. Component selection and the stability in the feedback loop is analyzed.
