This year, the eight sessions were chaired by Prof. Dr. Heiner Detert, Prof. Dr. Sabine Laschat, Prof. Dr. Matthias Lehmann, Prof. Dr. Heinz Kitzerow, Prof. Dr. Tommaso Bellini, Prof. Dr. Matthias Bremer, Prof. Dr. Jan Lagerwall and Prof. Dr. Frank Giesselmann. After a few difficult years of Covid-19 pandemic this year the conference was finally held on-site giving the opportunities for the scientists from around the world to meet again in person and discuss thoroughly their research in various liquid crystal fields. The event was hosted by Prof. Dr. Matthias Lehmann (University of Würzburg) and Prof. Dr. Heiner Detert (University of Mainz) and welcomed by the vicepresident for innovation and knowledge transfer Prof. Dr. Matthias Bode. The group of Lehmann did exceptional work, giving people on site as well as those who could not be on site due to a COVID-19 disease the opportunity to present their work. Due to various security measures, the conference was not held in the Toscana Room as usual. It was moved to the larger AOK auditorium at Hubland campus to still ensure distancing between the participants. This year, over 60 people (Figure 2) contributed to the conference with 21 oral presentations and 41 posters. A novelty this year were the hybrid poster appetisers. To stimulate the discussion about their poster content, volunteers briefly summarised their poster before the poster session. A total of five scientists were invited to give a talk. The conference opened with a talk by Tommaso Bellini who reported on the liquid crystalline ordering of nucleic acids and its relation to Watson Crick pairing. On the next day the morning session kicked off with a talk by Xiangbing Zheng on ferro and antiferro chirality in columnar and bicontinuous phases. The third speaker Matthias Bremer described the Merck KGaA internal discovery and the bright future of ferroelectric nematic materials. Lydia Sosa Vargas then spoke about the range of applications of self-assembled macromolecular semiconductor materials. Lastly, Dharmendra Pratap Singh summarised his work on Charge Transfer in Supramolecular Systems. Topics of the conference were spread over a broad spectrum and covered all facets of liquid-crystalline research: From the recently discovered ferronematic phase to radical core structures and biosensing in zebra fish. Many contributions provided new insight into the effects of chirality in lyotropic and thermotropic mesogens, ionic and supramolecular liquid crystals and photoactive materials. Furthermore, recent results in the manufacturing of nanoand mesoporous liquid-crystalline composite materials derived from e.g. graphene, silica and chitin were presented. Another focus in research was sustainability by means of reuse of imine-based mesogens and recycling of shrimp shells for nanomaterials. AuNPs are successfully utilised to induce a controlled phase change of LCs and, simultaneously, LCs make an active control of the AuNPs optical properties. He studied at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland, and received the master’s degree in 1965. In 1971 prof. Jadżyn defended his doctoral dissertation, in which he analysed the influence of electric permittivity on the hydrogen bond polarity in organic complexes. 1974 he was awarded the postdoctoral degree (habilitation) based on the dissertation „Study of solvation of dipolar molecules in neutral solvents”. Later, in 1986, prof. Jadżyn obtained a professorship in physical sciences. His professional scientific career started 56 years ago in the Department of Dielectrics of the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Poznań, when he was appointed to a position as assistant in the Liquid Dielectrics Group. Since 1975 Jan Jadżyn was linked to the Institute of Molecular Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Poznań where he founded the dielectric laboratory and for 26 years (1988–2014) served as Head of the Department of Dielectrics. His research topics were mainly concentrated on the dielectric properties of liquids with hydrogen bonds and mesogenic molecular systems. He was especially interested in the study of properties of extremely diluted solutions of dipolar molecules and pretransitional effects in liquid crystals. For many terms of office Jan was a valued member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Molecular Physics. He was an active member of the International Liquid Crystal Society (ILCS) and one of the founding members of the very active Polish Liquid Crystal Society (PLCS) and later one of its Honorary Members. Furthermore, Jan was a member of the scientific committees of several European Conferences on Liquid Crystals (ECLC) over the years. During his career Prof Jadżyn was a visitor to many universities and research institutions, among them the Universities of Nancy and of Lille in France, the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, the University of Münster in Germany and the Institute of Experimental Physics in Koszyce in Slovakia. In particular, Jan valued the collaboration with scientists of the Institute of Chemistry at the Military University of Technology in Warsaw. Prof Jadżyn was a well-respected and valued teacher by generations of young physicists and a long-time higher education lecturer at the Poznań University of Technology. During his career, Professor Jan Jadżyn has published more than 240 papers, mostly on dielectric studies, in different highly regarded journals of international impact. Selected publications of Professor Jan Jadżyn are given below: * K. Prałat, J. Jadżyn, S. Balanicka, Dielectric properties and molecular structure of amide solutions. 1. Applications for these materials promise to be imminent, and yet many unknowns still surround some of their fundamental behaviours. In addition, new thermal and mechanical properties are continually being discovered. In this article, I review and summarise the key properties of an acrylate LCE developed during my PhD and compare them to the material from which it was derived – developed by the Uryama group. I highlight our material’s surprising negative Poission’s ratio and templateable properties and explore the possible structural roots of these behaviours.","PeriodicalId":18110,"journal":{"name":"Liquid Crystals Today","volume":"30 1","pages":"59 - 66"},"PeriodicalIF":3.1,"publicationDate":"2021-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45186117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
