Rapid, accurate and in-situ characterisation of polluted stream water is essential to inform remediation strategies. A novel method for determining the sources of pollution in mining-impacted river catchments relies on accurate measurement of metal concentrations (e.g. Cu) and streamflow (using NaBr) at multiple points across a river catchment. Traditional ex-situ methods of Cu (ICP-MS) and Br (Ion Chromatography) analysis are time consuming and expensive. This limits the number of samples, and therefore the spatial detail of mine pollution source estimates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a novel functionalised electromagnetic (f-EM) sensor for detecting Br and Cu concentrations in stream water with continuous measurements. Results show that these changes can be detected with a good correlation between the concentrations and the reflection coefficient, S11. Br was detected at 1.05 GHz with f- EM sensors based on ITO with a polynomial correlation of R2>0.91; Cu ions were detected at 1.4–1.5 and 2.3 GHz with f- EM sensors based on chelating polymers with a linear correlation of R2>0.94. In conclusion, f-EM sensors can potentially be integrated during mine pollution source apportionment studies for real-time and in-situ detection of Cu (and other metals) and Br concentrations.","PeriodicalId":181015,"journal":{"name":"2018 12th International Conference on Sensing Technology (ICST)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121918151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It will lead to a waste of natural resources and infrastructure damage for example landslide due to pipeline leakage. The proposed optical sensor has applied laser dynamic effect exist in the lasing system and characterized it. Then it will demonstrate point to point sensing and compare performance with Acoustic Emission (AE) sensor that usually use in localized leak location. Result shows that the proposed optical sensor is working well with minimal signal processing and able to pinpoint the leaking point with less than 5% error.","PeriodicalId":181015,"journal":{"name":"2018 12th International Conference on Sensing Technology (ICST)","volume":"12 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120840980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially in mining, this variable has fundamental importance for transporting and handling stages, which represent the most expensive part of ore treatment. This work presents the development of a bench system for measuring iron ore moisture in real time. The sensor consists of a pair of stainless steel electrodes and, differently to other systems for this purpose, it is based on a modern current-to-voltage method, which presents simple circuit, low-cost, high accuracy, high signal-to-noise ratio, fast response and immunity to stray capacitances.","PeriodicalId":181015,"journal":{"name":"2018 12th International Conference on Sensing Technology (ICST)","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130596161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventionally, these linearization schemes are implemented in the discrete levels requiring dual supply rails (positive as well as negative), high power consumption, large component-counts and board space. In the proposed work, on-chip solutions are presented using a single supply voltage. Various design techniques are incorporated to enable a low-voltage, low-power operation and enhance the sensitivity of the sensor. The proposed schemes are designed in a 180-nm CMOS process. Preliminary simulation results in the architectural level show the efficacy of the proposed schemes. Integrated simulation results with the previously measured characteristic data of the GMR sensor show a good agreement with the theory as well as their discrete-counterparts.","PeriodicalId":181015,"journal":{"name":"2018 12th International Conference on Sensing Technology (ICST)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128790127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is possible to implement widespread environmental monitoring thanks to the availability of new wireless connection and low energy sensor modules. This paper describes a project using Internet of Things (IoT) technology combined with low energy modules to monitor an environment and display data on graphs to view information and the history of data in a given location. This project consists of the recording of environmental data (pollution, humidity, temperature…) and the display of said data on a mobile application or on a website. Particular emphasis is placed on the user interface and on the database design. The project described here was implemented at the University of Limerick, so this paper refers to the University of Limerick campus, but implementation would work in any place.","PeriodicalId":181015,"journal":{"name":"2018 12th International Conference on Sensing Technology (ICST)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125491663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Secure communication realises the protection goals of confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity, which are implemented by cryptographic functions. These functions need to evolve steadily in order to catch up with new attack vectors employed by cyber-criminals. This cryptographic evolution brings an increase of resource demand and consumption with it as cryptographic functions rise in complexity. The demand is difficult to satisfy by embedded platforms since they are often limited in their resources due to design efficiency. Therefore, adequate resource buffering is a crucial task in designing embedded systems that are future proof from a security point of view. In this work, we introduce a methodology for comparable resource benchmarking of cryptographic functions on embedded systems. Our approach enables designers and developers of embedded systems to achieve comparable results over an extended range of algorithms and implementations. This aids in the estimation of the cryptographic resource footprint. Further, we develop a measurement architecture for experimentation on different embedded platforms. We conduct a sample of reference measurements confirming well-known patterns in cryptography showing the validity of our framework. Finally, we argue for an open collaboration platform for sharing of benchmark results conducted with the framework.","PeriodicalId":181015,"journal":{"name":"2018 12th International Conference on Sensing Technology (ICST)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125272468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a determination requires accurate analysis in the field or in a laboratory. As the size of the study area grows, this activity can be time consuming and error prone because the number of specialists working under rigid criteria also increases. This paper proposes a novel methodology to classify grain size using unique wavelength reflectance data and artificial neural networks.
