However, it lags behind in electronics systems design and manufacturing (ESDM) capabilities. However, it is important for India to develop this sector both because of the tremendous economic opportunities it offers as well as its huge strategic relevance from security perspective. Government of India envisions making India a leading destination for ESDM sector in the world. This paper discusses some of the policy initiatives which can help India achieve this vision.","PeriodicalId":180836,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129976591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Serval Mesh Software is a mobile telephony platform that can operate independent of fixed infrastructure, by using the WiFi capability of the device to automatically form a wireless mesh network that supports the carriage of voice calls, short messages and other modes of communication.\u0000 Context and use cases for the Serval Mesh Software are included to provide the reader with some context. After describing the lack of inherent ad-hoc WiFi support on Android mobile telephones and the problems that result, this paper describes the WiFi Multi-Modal Management component incorporated into the Serval Mesh Software, that is used to maximize the mesh connectivity options available on any given model of telephone handset.\u0000 The approach taken is to modularize the detection and control of the WiFi hardware on each model of handset so that support for new handsets can be added without recompiling the software or managing a single byzantine monolithic control script that contains the commands for all supported handset models. This modular approach is then leveraged to facilitate automated acquisition of WiFi ad-hoc mode on hitherto unsupported models of Android telephone handsets, removing the need for labor-intensive manual crafting of these scripts, and the bottleneck and infrastructure-dependence that this previously entailed.\u0000 The paper concludes with preliminary results indicating the success of the improvements to the Serval Mesh Software project described in this paper, including anecdotal reports from third-party users of the software.","PeriodicalId":180836,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief","volume":"283 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116092788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reaping the profits of voice over WLAN, we can enhance the underlying technologies behind emergency call to improve the QoS parameters. Nowadays, the researchers have been focusing to bring in new technologies like VoIP for variety of applications. Healthcare is one of the major area where emergency calls are extensively required. Hospitals are one of the first users of VoWLAN solutions, mainly because of the significant need for effective communication among high-valued medical staff. In case of a medical emergency, VoWLAN can mean the difference between life and death. The emphasize of the paper is to analyze the resource and cost effective utilization of VoWLAN, particularly for reduced delay based emergency call routing.","PeriodicalId":180836,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128339289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The network server would either grant or reject transmission requests by estimating, from the cognitive radio's geo-location, the likely impact its transmission would have on incumbents and other cognitive radio devices. This decision must be based on an accurate real-time radio environment map (REM) [1] which is kept up to date by readings from cognitive radios, sensors and dynamic radio propagation prediction. By this means the imperative of coexistence in the signal strength domain of cognitive radio technology can be satisfied. It is also shown that this approach also offers a means with which to detect physical-layer attacks.\u0000 It is explained that Integral Equation-based propagation prediction algorithms are appropriate candidates for the dynamic propagation engine necessary for the purposes outlined above given their 'automatic' nature and that they can give results arbitrarily close to the exact numerical solution.\u0000 The humanitarian relevance of cognitive radio is that where operated as infrastructureless networks they will provide telecommunications services to deprived areas and could prove vital in disaster recovery. Where there is network support cognitive radios will become cheaper as a result.","PeriodicalId":180836,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123172551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The conventional SLM method requires the transmission of side information i.e. the index of the selected signal (with lowest PAPR) with each OFDM symbol. This leads to reduction in data rate loss. In this paper we have proposed two new phase sequence sets (i) modified binary chaotic sequence and (ii) modified Hadamard sequence for SLM-OFDM system based on quaternary modulation and suggested a new mapping scheme called \"Rectangular Mapping\" to map the Quaternary data to 8-PSK constellation by using two phase factors {1, j} to eliminate the requirement of SI. The proposed method provides good PAPR reduction in comparison to existing SLM schemes and provides consistent SER performance as SI is not required.","PeriodicalId":180836,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief","volume":"304 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115932640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction for OFDMA is motivated by a desire to increase the mean transmit power and to improve the power amplifier efficiency. This paper presents use of chaotic sequences generated using tent map for multiple data rate spreading and PAPR reduction in OFDMA system. Increase in PAPR due to variable spreading could be reduced by spreading using chaotic sequences. Chaotic sequences gave constant PAPR values for different combinations of data rates. It was also noted that the sequences could be chosen irrespective of the data rates used. Bit error rate was found to be comparable with that for Orthogonal Variable Spreading Factor codes.","PeriodicalId":180836,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125861280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All decisions are based on information which has to be interpreted in context. By making the information systems context-aware we can have systems that significantly improve the human capabilities to handle situations. Further, most of the time, we react to events that take place. We organize activities, and gather information and resources, in response and handle the event in the context in which it takes place. The challenge comes up when we design systems that support our abilities to handle events, anticipated as well as unanticipated. In this tutorial be discuss the current state of the art for Context-aware Systems, Event-driven Systems and present some ideas towards the design and implementation of Context-aware, Event-driven Systems. Some examples of the systems being developed and deployed at the University of Maryland will also be presented.","PeriodicalId":180836,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131225405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we propose an emergency medical service system which can be used in disaster hit areas. Our proposed system aims at reducing this problem and help doctors to serve the injured and save lives. The system designed is easily portable. This system can also be efficaciously link the disaster affected community with the doctor who is willing to assist from anywhere in the world. The proposed portable system can measure physiological signals of people without the requirement of elaborate patient monitoring system, which also consumes lot of power. The expedite response underpins our system and by its exclusive usage in the most challenging environments makes it a perfect solution for patient monitoring in disaster affected areas. The experimental results show the performance of our system is comparatively similar to the manually measured parameters.","PeriodicalId":180836,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Wireless Technologies for Humanitarian Relief","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131599374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
