This method is concerned with the reduction of packet collisions in the network to improve the throughput by snooping to determine the available time for packet transmission. A mathematical model is developed and analyzed. The numerical results show that the proposed method gives a better performance than that of conventional protocols when receiver collisions are unavoidable.","PeriodicalId":178842,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. But they cannot be served if the network does not have enough resources or knowledge, or they are new services. We introduce a new network management scheme, resource evolutionary management (REMan). It consists of four domains, user, managed, managing and supplier. All resources are classified into three classes; computing, place and knowledge. Place resources are storage and communication resources. Resource provider, in the managing domain, will do the provisioning function for managed domain. Resources, especially knowledge, are evolvable using the resource evolutionary algorithm. Service availability analysis has shown the enhancement of network services by increasing service availabilities in user service aspect.","PeriodicalId":178842,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The presented method is a hybrid type of DWT and DCT. The sub-block DCT is employed to the DWT-details. DWT-details have usually zero mean and small variance and hence the sub-block DCT method is very efficient. The size of sub-block for DCT is 8/spl times/8 pixel for level 1 DWT-details and 4/spl times/4 pixel for level 2 DWT-details. The simulation examples show that the presented method gives a better picture quality that of the usual JPEG method.","PeriodicalId":178842,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Our mechanism classified connections into two classes: real time class and non-real time class. In real time class, an ATM protection switching (APS) mechanism, a preventive restoration method defined in 1.630, is used as a restoration scheme that is realizing fast restoration and high reliability. In the non-real time class, the interactive restoration mechanism using k-shortest control paths is applied. The performance evaluations via simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism and the improved restoration ratio than the pure APS mechanism.","PeriodicalId":178842,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. In this algorithm we developed a binary format of a given frame and after integrating the pixels' value in a block; the difference of target block and candidate are taken as the measure of match. This value must be no less than the pre-setup threshold value. It was found that the new algorithm required less computation than any other matching criteria and this was justified by our experimental results using an MPEG encoder.","PeriodicalId":178842,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. We implemented the MPLS LER system by adding the MPLS service controller and MPLS interface module (MIM) with 2.5 Gbit/s throughput to the ACE2000 ATM switching system. We also describe the implementation of the MIM that can support ships-in-the-night mode such as ATM service and Internet service in the MPLS LER system. We designed the MIM to have a high-performance IP router function as well as ATM processing functions. It consists of a physical layer processing part, IP forwarding engine and VC merging part, ATM layer processing part, and switch interface part. The most important part of this module is IP forwarding engine, because it has a major effect on the performance of the MPLS LER system. We propose a high-performance IP forwarding engine that can support QoS-based multi-services such as ATM service, MPLS VPN service, emulated leased line (ELL) service, and real-time (RT) service, as well as best-effort service. It provides a high-speed IP lookup by a hardware-based pipelined and parallel lookup control scheme and CAM-based IP search engine. It provides 622 Mbit/s wire-rate forwarding performance and 14 Mpps lookup performance.","PeriodicalId":178842,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Of these, Bluetooth technology promises a wider acceptance in term of home networking in the near future. The potential of easily embedding Bluetooth technology in communication devices, computing devices and home appliances make it a more attractive alternative to SWAP. Although the layer up to the data link layer has been standardized by the Bluetooth consortium, how complete home networking solutions can be realized, is still not clear. This paper addresses this aspect, and proposes a way to establish a complete home network deploying Bluetooth technology.","PeriodicalId":178842,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Normally, switches have to exchange VLAN membership information with its neighboring switches via some form of VLAN registration protocol. This is to ensure proper operation of VLAN forwarding and VLAN filtering services in a LAN. However, in the implementation done by the authors in this paper, no VLAN membership information is exchanged between any switches. The VLAN registration protocol is simply replaced by the router that sends a simple periodic multicast packet to all switches in the LAN. Some conformance testing is done to verify the correctness of the implementation. Some minor limitations about the implementation are described as well.","PeriodicalId":178842,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. Smaller cells increase the handoff traffic drastically and wideband services cause severe network fluctuations with their frequent handoffs. As a result, it is a challenge to provide stable QoS in wireless networks. In addition, some wideband services suffer from poor QoS under congestion, where wideband services have less chance of getting enough resources compared to narrowband services. We introduce a region, a logical cell, defined as a minimal set of cells, which enables stable call control in wireless traffic conditions. Then, we propose a two-level call admission control (CAC) mechanism, in which CAC is performed in a region as well as in a cell. The simulation results show that the proposed CAC mechanism not only guarantees QoS under any traffic conditions, but also improves the QoS. The CAC also achieves service fairness by reducing QoS differences among the services.","PeriodicalId":178842,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. The allocation of radio resources in 3GPP documents is based only on the amount of data in the radio link control (RLC) transmission buffer. This may cause difficulties in adapting high traffic burstiness that is an intrinsic property of variable bit rate (VBR) traffic. UMTS presents the functionality which is needed to establish, modify and maintain a UMTS service with a specific QoS. We use a token bucket filter in a mobile station (MS) for an uplink traffic shaper to provide conformance between the negotiated QoS for a service and the data traffic. In addition, we introduce an improved traffic volume measurement mechanism using this model which enables measurement of both current buffer payloads and incoming traffic. That is, a token bucket filter and a traffic volume mechanism are able to support VBR services in wireless networks efficiently. Through simulation, we also show that our scheme has better bandwidth adaptability.","PeriodicalId":178842,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings.
