\u0000 \u0000Summary \u0000Cesarean section in the cat and dog \u0000Most bitches and queens presented with dystocia end up \u0000having a cesarean section. Even if expulsion of the fetuses \u0000is in principle possible via the birth canal, conservative \u0000obstetric treatment not always succeeds in delivering all \u0000the fetuses. Surgical intervention is mandatory if relative \u0000or absolute fetal oversize, uterine torsion or rupture, or \u0000obstruction \u0000of the birth canal is present. A cesarean section \u0000is also the treatment of choice if maternal well-being is \u0000compromised, as it usually is the most efficient treatment \u0000with the lowest risk, especially if more than one fetus \u0000remains to be delivered. In order to keep the anesthesia \u0000time as short as possible, the preparations for cesarean section \u0000and care of the neonates are made prior to anesthetic \u0000induction. One should choose an anesthetic protocol that \u0000meets the special needs of the dam and fetuses, and with \u0000which one is familiar. Whether an ovariohysterectomy is \u0000performed at the time of the cesarean section depends on \u0000the findings during surgery and on the owner’s request.

It improves safety in anaesthesia. The measurement is influenced by probe position, pigmentation, perfusion and ambient light. Knowledge of the measurement principles and influencing factors allows an optimal interpretation of the results and an adequate error management. The following review article describes the measurement principles and error sources of pulse oximetry.
