However, this approach increases the complexity and dry mass of the satellite harness. Therefore, extensive research is done to replace, complement or extend the wired communications with wireless ones. In this context, this paper presents the UWB-based solution developed within the WiSAT project funded by ESA. Considering the determined set of requirements for intra-spacecraft wireless communications, the proposed VN360 UWB module implements a custom software stack of the ISA-100.11a protocol over the IEEE 802.15.4 UWB PHY layer. The solution is tested and validated in different laboratory environmental conditions (TRL 4), including the satellite mock-up built within WiSAT. The results prove the capacity of the VN360 UWB module to establish a reliable intra-spacecraft UWB connection.","PeriodicalId":177862,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Wireless for Space and Extreme Environments (WiSEE)","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116349687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to enhance the users mobility for indoor or outdoor environment, it is essential to choose the most appropriate receiver. LiFi systems suffer of a lack of receiver solutions about two great LiFi problematics: the integration of the receiver into mobile devices such as smartphones and the receiver capacity to work in indoor and outdoor configurations without complexifying to the system. SunPartner Technologies develops specific semi-transparent solar cells to solve these two problematics. In this paper, we show the main results concerning the ambient lighting effects obtained by semi-transparent photovoltaic modules developed by SunPartner Technologies. In particular, we show through LiFi measurements, that we can obtain three different SNR responses to ambient lighting increase. The conventional effect is obtained when the SNR decreases with the ambient lighting increase. The unusual effect concerns the SNR increase when the ambient lighting increases. Finally, the saturation stability effects show a constant SNR level for different ambient lighting. Through this research, we designed a specific semi-transparent photovoltaic module optimized for LiFi application and we performed a demonstrator that allows streaming-video using this specific photovoltaic module.","PeriodicalId":177862,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Wireless for Space and Extreme Environments (WiSEE)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131567792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most accurate results can be obtained by using CAD data of all parts belonging to the antenna and objects in its vicinity. However, depending on size and number of parts involved this can lead to a huge amount of data which can not be handled by current EM simulation tools anymore. Thus, usually a trade-off between simulation accuracy and object size needs to be found. In this paper, simplification algorithms for automatically reducing CAD data of a Galileo II satellite are introduced and tested.","PeriodicalId":177862,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Wireless for Space and Extreme Environments (WiSEE)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134353566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Leaks may be caused by space debris impact or structural aging and failure overtime. This paper addresses the issue of leak type detection by analyzing airborne ultrasonic waves through Fourier Decomposition and Singular Spectrum Analysis. Depending on the vessel material, size of the leak, and pressure gradient, different waveforms are produced. Once a large number of samples have been recorded, the resulting database is used for detecting leaks and identification of the leak specification. This study includes aluminum, steel, rubber, and plastic.","PeriodicalId":177862,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Wireless for Space and Extreme Environments (WiSEE)","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134038463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Real-time MIMO signal processing is implemented by using the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) devices. Software defined implantation of MIMO VLC can assist in enabling an adaptive and reconfigurable communication system without hardware changes. We measured the error vector magnitude (EVM), bit error rate (BER) and spectral efficiency performance for single-carrier M-QAM MIMO VLC using spatial diversity and spatial multiplexing. Results show that spatial diversity MIMO VLC improves error performance at the cost of spectral efficiency that spatial multiplexing should enhance. We propose the adaptive MIMO solution that both modulation schema and MIMO schema are dynamically adapted to the changing channel conditions for enhancing the error performance and spectral efficiency. The average error-free spectral efficiency of adaptive 2×2 MIMO VLC achieved 12 b/s/Hz over 2 meters indoor dynamic transmission.","PeriodicalId":177862,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Wireless for Space and Extreme Environments (WiSEE)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128204062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The wireless communication between nodes is responsible for most of the energy consumed in WSNs. A promising method to improve the energy efficiency is the usage of a Cooperative Multiple Input Multiple Output (CO-MIMO) scheme, where nodes form clusters to transmit and receive signals using a virtual antenna array. This work presents a study on the energy consumption of multi-hop and single-hop transmission compared to CO-MIMO and how to select the most efficient method. It also proposes a method for adaptively choosing the number of nodes that form a CO-MIMO cluster in order to maximize the lifetime of the network and to avoid disconnections. The proposed method takes into account not only the total energy consumption but also the distribution of energy within the network, aiming to keep the energy distribution across the network as uniform as possible. The effects of the proposed methods in the total available energy of the network and in the distribution of the energy is presented by means of numerical simulations.","PeriodicalId":177862,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE International Conference on Wireless for Space and Extreme Environments (WiSEE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130330769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
