However, these particles have interfacial energy higher than conventional pigments; thus, they have a tendency to interact with each other to form a secondary agglomeration which may cause deterioration of those functions. To solve these problems, applying high shear force using a high-speed mixer is one of the prospective methods to produce monodispersed uniform dispersion of ultrafine particles. In this study, the relationship between optical properties and high-speed mixing was examined using a high speed thin film mixer. When hydrophilic TiO 2 nanoparticles were dispersed in ion-exchanged water, the extinction coefficient decreased in accordance with the peripheral speed of the rotor. Particle size distribution depends on the mixing speed and has good correlation with the increase of distinction coefficient.","PeriodicalId":17464,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the society of cosmetic chemists","volume":"49 1","pages":"142-146"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80619608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, analyzing the internal state of the skin could make it possible to provide evidence-based counseling, which could offer benefits to customers. However, it is difficult to perform simple analyses of the inner condition of the skin, and conventional methods of analysis generally require costly laboratory equipment. Therefore, we used multiple regression analysis to create an estimation formula to calculate the skin’s inner structure feature values based on skin surface feature values, which can be easily obtained. As objective variables, we used the number of dermal papillary structures and a score for dermal fibrous structure clearness. As explanatory variables, we used the feature values for sulci cutis and crista cutis characteristics, color characteristics, and frequency characteristics, as calculated from data including skin images. The concordance rate between corresponding beforeand after-scores obtained with our novel estimation formula and the actual scores based on measured values for the number of dermal papilla structures was 100% and that for the clearness of dermal fibrous structures was 95%. These results demonstrate that skin surface feature values, which can be obtained using a simple device such as a microscope, can be used to estimate the condition of the inner structures of the skin, including the number of dermal papillary structures and the clearness of dermal fibrous structures.","PeriodicalId":17464,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the society of cosmetic chemists","volume":"16 1","pages":"219-229"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85383096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, some studies about TRPM8 functions besides the temperature sensor are in progress, but little is known about the role of TRPM8 in human skin melanocytes. Therefore, we examined the function and effect of Geranium robertianum L. on TRPM8 in human skin melanocytes. As a result, mRNA expressions of melanin synthesis-related factors were decreased by this TRPM8 activator. On the other hand, a TRPM8 inhibitor exerted reverse effects. In UVB-irradiated melanocytes, TRPM8 activity and mRNA expression were decreased, and mRNA expressions of melanin synthesis-related factors were increased. Moreover, Geranium robertianum L. increased TRPM8 activity and mRNA expression, and decreased mRNA expressions of melanin synthesis-related factors in human skin melanocytes. On the basis of these results, it was concluded that TRPM8 had a suppressive function for melanin synthesis and the reduction of this function by UVB irradiation induced the acceleration of melanin synthesis in skin melanocytes. Since Geranium robertianum L. enhanced TRPM8 activity and mRNA level, it may prevent and improve pigmentation induced by the excessive synthesis of melanin.","PeriodicalId":17464,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the society of cosmetic chemists","volume":"44 1","pages":"300-310"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86662580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
