Wu","doi":"10.1109/AVFOP.2011.6082123","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/AVFOP.2011.6082123","url":null,"abstract":"To support the need to distribute analog signals from microwave antennas dispersed throughout military aircraft, much research has been devoted to developing microwave photonic links (MPLs) with very high linearity and low noise figures. Frequency-modulated (FM) photonic links are a promising technology to provide high dynamic-range signal transmission for these airborne antenna remoting systems. FM lasers, where a phase modulator in the optical cavity varies the optical frequency with applied RF power, have been demonstrated with very high modulation efficiency [1, 2]. Demodulation performed using an optical filter based frequency discriminator and direct detection (FM-DD) (also called slope or interferometric detection) can be engineered for low nonlinearities by optimizing the transfer function of the filter [3]. In fact, for a given photocurrent, there exists an optimum bias voltage that maximizes the OIP3. One can envision a DC control circuit that would be able to maintain the optimum OIP3 performance from the photodiode. Such mechanisms in long links include chromatic dispersion and double-Rayleigh scattering, the latter of which introduces multi-path interference (MPI). However, these processes are generally not a concern in short links for avionic platforms except when reflections from fiber optic connectors produce strong MPI. Phase modulated links provide distinct advantages over intensity modulation for digital [1] and analog [2] applications; however, they are severely impacted by laser phase noise. The reduction of mixing spurs provides an important advantage over conventional RF mixers for wide-band operation.
