Pulmonary arterial hypertension, characterized by increased blood pressure in the pulmonary artery, poses a significant risk for both morbidity and mortality in individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Aim‎ of‎ the‎ study: The aim of the current study was to evaluate association between hyperparathyroidism and incidence of pulmonary hypertension among haemodialysis patients. Methods:‎ This study was performed on 100 haemodialysis patients; they were divided according to incidence of pulmonary hypertension into 2 groups: 63 pulmonary hypertension patients and 37 patients without pulmonary hypertension. Results:‎ The most reported leading cause of end-stage renal disease was hypertension (65%), analgesic nephropathy (11%) and diabetic nephropathy (9%). About 27% of patients had residual urine output.The included patients received hemodialysis for about 3.06 ± 1.5 years with average ultrafiltration rate 3.3 ± 1.15 L. About 96% of patients received hemodialysis via A-v fistula and mean A-v fistula flow volume was 1111.7 ± 434.1. Conclusion: Disturbance in parathyroid release significantly affected incidence of pulmonary hypertension. Also, hypoparathyroidism is associated with increased incidence rate of pulmonary hypertension .","PeriodicalId":174236,"journal":{"name":"Medicine Updates","volume":"9 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141702847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It mostly affects the skin and peripheral nerves, triggering a variety of cellular immunological reactions that may have long-term effects, including peripheral neuropathy. WHO categorizes leprosy into two groups: paucibacillary, which has five or less skin lesions, and multibacillary, which has six or more. The disease spectrum is closely correlated with the level of cellular immunity and bacterial load. Objectives: to estimate the annual case detection rate of leprosy in Mansoura dermatology and leprosy hospital, the proportion of lepromatous leprosy and tuberculoid leprosy cases and to assess epidemiological trends of leprosy before and after the start of COVID-19 pandemic in Egypt. Methods: A cross sectional study included 289 patients who were diagnosed and registered as newly detected leprotic patients at leprosy clinic in Mansoura dermatology and leprosy hospital during 2010 and 2022. Results: Annual case detection rate of leprosy in each year estimated by number of reported leprosy cases in relation to the population number in the governorate measured by the central agency for public mobilization and statistics in each year has decreased gradually from 2010 to 2022 with the highest annual case detection rate in 2010 and lowest in 2022. Annual case detection rate of leprosy has been decreased from 4.001/1 million in 2010 to 0.861 /1 million in 2022. Conclusions : The results of this retrospective analysis of leprosy data showed a decrease in the annual case detection rate of new leprotic patients through the study period (289 patients from 2010 to 2022) in comparison with the previous old studies in Egypt . During COVID pandemic, there was significant decrease in average number of recorded leprotic patients/ year, as well as annual case detection rate (0.99 /1 million) of leprosy when compared to their average number/year and annual case detection rate (4.46 /1 million) before COVID pandemic.","PeriodicalId":174236,"journal":{"name":"Medicine Updates","volume":"11 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141703563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are typically classified into three taxonomic groups based on their chemical structure and pigmentation, which include brown algae (Ochrophyta), green algae (Chlorophyta), and red algae (Rhodophyta). However, marine microalgae produce harmful toxins that can cause various syndromes such as shellfish and fish poisonings. These Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) have increased in frequency, severity, and range, posing significant health risks to those who consume contaminated seafood. The goal of this study was to assess the clinical improvement and correlation with radiological resorption of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) hence we can decide appropriate time for conservative management. Materials and methods: 18 patients who had LDH on initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were included in this retrospective analysis. The average age was 36.9 ± 7.2 years, with eleven cases predominantly male. A total of 100% of the patients had sciatica, and 55.6% had pain in their lower backs. Since none of the patients underwent surgery, they were all given conservative care. For 8 to 11 months, patients were followed up clinically and radiologically (using an MRI) in the outpatient clinic. Results: 44.4% of patients had L5-S1 disc prolapse whereas 55.6% had L4-5 level affected. Sequestration affected 66.7% while Extruded disc was seen in 33.3%. Conservative management revealed that 66.11 % underwent spontaneous resorption of the ruptured disc in a mean time of 9.2 ± 1.1 months as seen radiologically in the MRI. Clinical improvement occurred in all patients in a mean of 5.9 ± 1.2. Conclusion: Spontaneous resorption of a herniated lumbar disc, which can happen due to retraction, dehydration, or an inflammatory-mediated mechanism, has become a more common event in lumbar disc prolapse. Clinical recovery typically occurred prior to LDH radiological improvement. The clinical resolution of symptoms and the radiological resolution of LDH were not shown to be significantly correlated.","PeriodicalId":174236,"journal":{"name":"Medicine Updates","volume":"9 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140436945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
