DemoMedia fills the gap that exists in today's video platforms which include recommender functionalities, but only trivial support for users to structure information. Thus, users are forced to write down notes from or about videos (needed for various reasons) on additional media, such as paper. This opens a media gap between video platform and note-taking or communication to others. DemoMedia becomes a note taking and communication tool for the user, as it offers a knowledge space on which users can freely arrange and associate information. Furthermore, its intelligent parsers compute relations that are implicitly expressed and queries knowledge bases for relevant information or related videos. Those get positioned on the space in a semantically meaningful way. On the other hand, computer programs can hardly identify the semantic of blocks and, therefore, tasks such as indexing the pages have, necessarily, limitations. Tools that can automatically identify the role can be useful to accomplish such a task. Web Page Segmenters are tools that, using visual and other clues in the page, can extract the functions of blocks. We suggest that a study to compare segmenters could be of interest to the community. A number of seminal papers have looked at the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) from a broad and historic perspective. Grudin's paper on 'Historical Continuity of Interface Design' which he published in 1990 and is a part of HCI history in itself characterises the evolution of user interface research with a focus on hardware in the 1950s, interface as software in the 1960s and 1970s, interface as terminal from the 1970s to the 1990s, and interface as work setting for groups of users from the 1990s onwards [11]. Bannon some twenty years later was 'Reimagining HCI: Towards a More Human-Centred Perspective' and points out that: 'The ambit of HCI has expanded enormously since the field's emergence in the early 1980s. Computing has changed significantly; mobile and ubiquitous communication networks span the globe, and technology has been integrated into all aspects of our daily lives.' [1, p. 50]. Bodker got a lot of attention with the notion of the 'Third-Wave HCI' on which she writes: 'In the third wave, the use contexts and application types broadened, and intermixed? Technology spread from the workplace to our homes and everyday lives and culture. Research in the third wave challenged the values related to technology in the second wave (e.g., efficiency) and embraced experience and meaning-making?'. [4, pp. 24-26]. In front of those developments-some of which can be seen as evolutions with gradual changes, some of which can be seen as more fundamental shifts, and some of which complement each other and keep on existing in parallel-there have always been great examples of concepts and tools to support human-information interaction. In fact, history has shown great combinations of HCI and hypertext. Engelbart's NLS half a century ago was ground-breaking and has been fascinating scholars until today [5]. On top of the great technological contributions such as structured documents and linked text and network communication and the mouse as input device, Engelbart and his team layed the ground for research on the more general theme of augmenting human intellect by providing users with powerful yet easy-to-use tools for working with information and for social interaction amongst users. For instance, the NLS had a audio and video conferencing tool integrated in the text editor. Despite the fact that both the theoretical contributions on the history of HCI since the 1950s and the stimulating tools by Engelbart and others put a strong focus on the single-user and the communication and cooperation among users, the latter social aspects have been partly neglected. Based on the de facto interchange standard BibTeX, the visual-meta Appendix presents all the information needed to cite the document (author, title, date, etc.) as well as clearly stating the values of any data (such as tables, lists, advanced layouts, etc.) and glossary terms. A visual-meta aware PDF software reader will then 'read' the document and find the visual-meta appendix which it will load this into memory. This will enable advanced functionality such as copying text and pasting it as a citation in one step, without interfering with legacy PDF readers. It will also reduce the need for citation managers and increase the opportunity for development of advanced citation management systems[1], [2], [3]. The work is inspired by and supports Doug Engelbart's push for an Open Hyperdocument System with xFile [4], [5], including the embedding of metadata for the use of advanced ViewSpec on reading. The paper suggests conducting semi-structured interviews with art curators as stakeholders. Thematic analysis should be done on the collected data which will help us to focus on the specific factors of greatest import to guide design of the tool set. Nürnberg","doi":"10.1145/3345509.3345861","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/3345509.3345861","url":null,"abstract":"As noted science fiction author Robert Heinlein once said: \"Man is not a rational animal, he is a rationalizing animal.\" [3] As recent work in behavioral economics has made clear, our irrationality is not random; we are irrational in predictable ways [4]. Despite this, many \"human-centered\" systems do not leverage this predictable irrationality in a way that is potentially productive for users. Hypertext research has its roots in the field of human computer interaction. Some of the most influential early writers in hypertext (e.g., Bush [1] and Engelbart [2]) described hypertext systems as ones that would extend and augment human capabilities. This foundational perspective on hypertext is still well-evidenced in some of the most recent research. Bush focused largely on extending human memory; Engelbart on augmenting human intellect. For these two pioneers, as well as a host of other hypertext researchers, the key aspect of hyper-text that allows it to augment humans so well is its rich under-standing of structure and the computations in and around it. It is practically axiomatic within the field that this rich structure is somehow closer to \"how humans think,\" though, as with most axioms, exactly why or how this is so is never fully and satisfactorily explained. Instead, the hypertext field relies on argument from example: non-linear traversals of information spaces (as opposed to an artificial linearity imposed by technologies such as writing) or emergent spatial organization of information (as opposed to prematurely formal organizations such as outlines). These examples (and others) work from generally \"correct\" forms of human thinking. Hypertext researchers, for example, do not claim that non-linear traversals of information spaces augment human intellect because some of the traversed links are faulty. On the contrary, linear representations are in some sense \"defective\" because they cannot represent the inherently non-linear thinking engaged in by humans, this \"defectiveness\" apparently attributable to a failure to capture useful associations that are (or could usefully be) present in the mind of the traverser. However, if fidelity of representation is the basis of the belief that hypertext can augment human thought, should we not also build into our understanding of structure the predictable biases we know are present? In this talk, we will explore the idea of accounting for the types of predictable irrationality discussed by behavioral economists in the understanding of hypertext structure. How can we model our biases? Does this bring us closer to accurate representations of human thought? Users can use spatial and visual attributes, such as proximity, shape, or color, to describe the information space. Spatial hypertext models are special. For example, they need a flexible handling of attributes. Using a relational database management system (DBMS) in the backend, leads to an impedance mismatch problem as spatial hypertext and relational database approaches build on different structural paradigms. In this paper, we introduce the spatial hypertext impedance mismatch and argue for a special structure store to avoid or, at least, reduce the introduced problem. Document stores appear to be an intuitive way or at least a good starting point for providing an intuitive way to store, retrieve, and manage spatial hypermedia structures.
