Kimura","doi":"10.2320/jinstmet.jbw201611","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2320/jinstmet.jbw201611","url":null,"abstract":"Two-phase microstructure consisting of the E21 type (Co, Ni)3 AlC, κ phase, and (Co, Ni) primary solid solution, α phase, forms having three different characteristic morphologies in the same alloy according to their thermal history. Two of them are observed in the as-cast microstructure; the primary α phase dendrite with fi ne cuboidal κ precipitates, and the eutectic lamellar consisting of α and κ phases. During heat treatments of the alloys at high temperatures, the nodular type discontinuous precipitation (DCP) lamellar, consisting of α and κ phases, forms locally in the primary α dendrite regions as the third morphology. The interlamellar spacing and nodule size of the DCP lamellar becomes larger with increasing heat treatment temperature. Micro-Vickers hardness numbers of the α primary dendrites having κ precipitates and the eutectic lamellar are comparable, and higher than those of the DCP lamellar. The alloy annealed at 1173 K for 96 h exhibits high yield strength, the 0.2% proof stress, exceeding about 800 MPa in compression, and the excellent ductility of 13.6% plastic strain at room temperature in tension. On the other hand, the DCP lamellar formation lowers the strength of the alloys, however high strength about 750 MPa can be maintained in the alloy heat treated at the highest temperature of 1373 K as the lowest yield stress of all. Elevated temperature strength measured at 1123 K for the alloy heat treated at 1173 K is 486 MPa of yield stress in compression. The DCP lamellar formation can be suppressed by the two-step heat treatments and by the unidirectional solidifi cation. The former has more homogeneous distribution of fi ne DCP lamellar than single-step heat treated alloys. The latter is very effective to improve the homogeneity and thermal stability of α and κ twophase aligned microstructure and to maintain high temperature strength of 452 MPa at 1123 K. Recently, some compounds have been reported as candidates for practical PGM extractants in addition to new concepts for PGM extraction mechanisms. In this review article, we present well–known PGM recovery processes based on solvent extraction, industrial extractants and their properties, and conventional extraction mechanism for PGMs. Additionally, we discuss recent interesting extraction systems (amide–type compounds and ionic liquid) and then introduce new extraction concepts based on the specific interactions at the outer–sphere of a metal complex in the organic phase. A droplet of dilute MgCl2 solution was put on the specimen. The specimen was set in the chamber with a relative humidity of 33% in order to make the droplet dry into the layer. The CCD camera system was employed to observe the change in the shape of the droplet and in the specimen surface during the drying process. In addition, the surface potential measurement equipment was applied for monitoring the surface potential of the specimen with the layer. When the droplet of dilute solution became thin and saturated, pitting corrosion occurred and the surface potential rapidly lowered. By contrast, thick and saturated layer did not induce pitting corrosion and the surface potential indicated the relatively low and steady. Therefore, it was revealed that the atmospheric corrosion occurred on the steel under saturated MgCl2 solution layer whose thickness less than 0.2 mm. The present study focuses on the effect of initial grain size before ECAP, using the samples having extremely large grain size of 210 μm and smaller ones of 30 μm. The final grain sizes of cold–rolled and annealed sheets were about 30 μm for both processes. It was found that Rankford value (r–value) of large grain size was higher compared with that of smaller one while ridging was alleviated in the latter. The recrystallization temperature of cold–rolled sheets was about 50°C lower in the larger grain size. It is considered that higher density of grain–scale shear bands in the sample of larger grain size promotes recrystallization and reduction of <001>//ND grains and increase <111>//ND grains, resulting in higher r–value. However, coarser arrangement of <001>//ND colony parallel to the rolling direction in large grain size may causes higher ridging in spite of the lower fraction <001>//ND grains.
