The article has attempted to investigate the effects of social affordances, news overload, and “news finds me” perception (NFM) on people's news avoidance. Building on the understanding of the conceptualization and operationalizations of news avoidance, a research model of social media affordances influencing news avoidance is constructed based on the perspective of cognitive load and technology affordance. The model was empirically tested using data from a sample of 1435 social media users in China by structural equation modeling technique. The findings of the study revealed that perceived news overload and NFM both significantly affect news avoidance; the three dimensions of social media affordances, social articulation, social transparency, and user-generated content, all have significant effects on NFM, while social articulation also has a significant effect on perceived news overload.
