Oral Presentation for: Improving operational efficiency through condition-based monitoring and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies","authors":"Will Castelnau","doi":"10.1071/ep24451","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1071/ep24451","url":null,"abstract":"Presented on 29 May 2025: Session 25 Woodside Burrup Pty Ltd (‘Woodside’) has operated the world-class Pluto liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants safely and reliably since 2012. This complex facility employs numerous heat exchangers to cool and liquefy natural gas. The heat transfer process is facilitated by large fin fans forcing ambient air through heat exchangers containing rows of hot finned tubes. Fin fans are crucial for the efficacy of this thermodynamic cycle. Hence, minimising their downtime and maintaining them is vital for achieving high production. Woodside developed low-resolution and low-cost wireless Internet of Things (IoT) vibration sensors coupled with advanced analytics techniques, to reduce maintenance costs and increase production efficiency. Data from the sensors, mounted on the rolling elements of fans and motors, detect performance changes and diagnose potential failures, reducing the need for human inspection. IoT technology has been instrumental in facilitating frequent and continuous data collection, enabling predictive maintenance. Shifting from reactive to proactive maintenance yields several benefits, primarily reducing operational costs and enhancing safety standards. This research highlights the successful implementation of minimum covariance determinant model and median absolute deviation for threshold setting to identify abnormal vibrations, with post-processing steps to manage alarm frequency. We demonstrate that the combination of low-cost sensing and high-density data coupled with our novel approach produces high accuracy by correlating real faults. This innovative exploitation of IoT presents profound possibilities to elevate operational efficiency through the strategic use of timeseries data, optimal anomaly detection, reducing potential failures and optimising maintenance. The insights are visualised through an interactive analytics platform, facilitating informed decision-making and enhancing operational effectiveness. Various methane measurement technologies can be deployed to detect, localise and quantify methane emissions. These insights inform targeted methane mitigation activities and provide a credible basis for methane emission disclosure through reporting frameworks. Woodside Energy has taken actions to measure and reduce its methane emissions profile and is developing a pathway to embed available measurements technologies. As a signatory to the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative’s ‘Aiming for Zero’ initiative, these actions will also support Woodside Energy’s responsibility to communicate mitigation activities and meet the transparency expectations of its stakeholders. Offshore oil and gas operations’ safety, logistical and technical challenges impact the selection of technologies used for methane emissions measurement. In 2024, Woodside Energy completed a study, at our Shenzi platform in the Gulf of Mexico, to evaluate the performance of methane measurement technologies through a field deployment trial. The study considered a variety of technologies such as satellite, aerial, drone and handheld devices, results from which will also support the development of a longer-term measurement, monitoring, reporting and verification strategy. This paper will outline the technology’s performance relative to measurement objectives including (i) the identification of mitigation projects, (ii) the alignment with reporting frameworks, and (iii) the potential for ongoing cost-effective deployment. It also provides an overview of the attributes of the technologies and the insights gained through their field deployment. To access the Oral Presentation click the link below. Over 600 cases have been diagnosed in Queensland’s resources industry since 2015. Due to the long latency of these diseases, diagnoses are expected to continue for many years even after reforms to reduce exposure have been implemented. In addition to effective exposure controls, quality health surveillance that detects disease early is key to managing risk. Exposure risks are present in the oil and gas sector such as diesel engine exhaust, welding fumes and the use of silica-based proppant powder in fraccing. Ineffective medical examinations contributed to Queensland’s failure to protect resource industry workers. Early detection of disease would have identified failed controls years sooner, allowing prompt interventions to reduce exposure and disease. Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) is the independent regulator for safety and health in Queensland’s resources industry. RSHQ regulates a national register of approved medical providers that perform lung disease screening to the high standards necessary for accurate diagnosis. This paper outlines the nature of health risks from exposure to airborne contaminants and the importance of fit-for-purpose medical examinations that can detect disease early for all resource sectors. Quality health surveillance is a critical consideration of any risk management system for the protection of workers’ health.","PeriodicalId":17318,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Japan Institute of Energy","volume":"65 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147916829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I try to link this concept to ‘petroculture’ since that notion too refers to practices that are so pervasive in modern societies that we tend to over-look them. Case in point is Royal Dutch Shell, in the Netherlands often and tellingly abbreviated to ‘de Koninklijke’ (the Royal one). By making explicit what most readers and citizens overlook because Shell seems as ‘natural’ in Dutch culture as tulips, bicycles and windmills, this contribution tries to make clear how the everyday aspects of Dutch petroculture in tourism, literature, and advertising are linked with the elite practices of managers and politicians.","PeriodicalId":17318,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Japan Institute of Energy","volume":"N° 10 1","pages":"1d-17d"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147901398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pt/NM/Z(24)75Ti(500sg) (N=Ni, M=Mo, Z=ZSM-5, 24=SiO2/Al2O3, 75=weight ratio, Ti=TiO2, 500=cal-cination temp. °C, sg=sol-gel method) and Pt/NM/Z(24)75Ti(600sg) prepared by the sol-gel method exhibited the higher activity in this reaction and the higher aromatics yields than the catalysts with single use of Al2O3 and TiO2 prepared by the kneading method. Further, Pt/NM/Z(24)30Al30Ti prepared by the kneading method and Pt/NM/Z(24)75Al(600sg) prepared by the sol-gel method exhibited the highest aromatics yield of 15% among the catalysts tested. The result indicated that the addition of TiO2 to the composite support would promote the interaction between molybdenum sulfide and TiO2, activate hydrogen and lead to enhanced cracking of ester group of triglyceride and cyclization of hydrocarbon fragments. When the sol-gel method was used, the catalysts with not only TiO2 but also Al2O3 exhibited the higher aromatics yields. Pt/NM/Z(24)75Ti(500sg) and Pt/NM/Z(24)75Ti(600sg) inhibited the formation of gaseous products while Pt/NM/Z(24)30Al30Ti and Pt/NM/Z(24)75Al(600sg) increased gaseous products, suggesting that the mechanism of aromatics formation might be different, and that the former would produce aromatics through the direct cyclization of longer-chained hydrocarbon fragments while the latter would produce them through gasification to C2-C4 olefins and the successive cyclization by the Diels-Alder reaction of olefins.","PeriodicalId":17318,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Japan Institute of Energy","volume":"281 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135665208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
