Data were collected from 210 brinjal farmers during October 2021 to April 2022 through personal interview and focus group discussions (FGDs). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that majority of the brinjal growers of the study area practiced PHI at the level of highly toxic (62%) in October, highly toxic in November (51.3), moderately toxic (83.5%) in December, moderately toxic (85.4%) in January, moderately toxic in February (74.5%), slightly toxic (51%) in March, and slightly toxic (62.9%) in April. Overall, the practice scenario of PHI by large portion of the brinjal farmers (97%) fell in unsafe categories whereas only 3% of them practiced PHI at a safe level. Survey responses indicated that extensive inaccurate pesticide usage, particularly inadequate PHI, endangers human health and the environment. It is suggested that Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), other GOs, and NGOs should take necessary joint efforts to instruct brinjal farmers on pesticide residue management by putting approved PHI level into practice and observing prudent pesticide use with reference to safe brinjal production.","PeriodicalId":17224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Bangladesh Agricultural University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135798871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was plotted in Split Plot Design with three replications. The experiment was consisted of two factors such as Factor A: M1= planting in gunny bags, M2 = planting in polybags, Factor B: five fertilizers composition treatments viz. T0: 0% (no fertilizers), T1: 25% (0.94 g/plant Urea + 1.25 g/plant TSP + 1.25 g/plant MoP), T2: 50% (1.87 g/plant Urea + 2.5 g/plant TSP + 2.5 g/plant MoP), T3: 75% (2.82 g/plant Urea + 3.75 g/plant TSP + 3.75 g/plant MoP) and T4: 100% (3.75 g/plant Urea + 5 g/plant TSP + 5 g/plant MoP) of N, P and K. All the parameters under study showed significant variations. Results showed that higher fruit length (3.83 cm) and diameter (2.54 cm), fruit weight per plant (190.08 g), yield (12.80 ton/ha) and TSS (7.44%) were found from planting of strawberry in polybags (M2) in compared to planting in gunny bags (M1). In relation to fertilizers composition higher fruit length (4.27 cm) and diameter (3.21 cm), total fruit weight per plant (216.79 g), fruit yield (16.35 t/ha) and TSS (8.10%) were recorded from mixed application of 100% fertilizer (4.75 g/plant Urea + 5 g/plant TSP + 5 g/plant MoP) of N, P, and K while the lower value was obtained from control. Among the treatment combination, the highest fruit length (4.13 cm) and diameter (3.09 cm), fruit weight per plant (199.57 g), fruit yield (17.50 t/ha) and TSS (8.17%) were found from planting of strawberry in polybags along with 100% (3.75 g/plant Urea + 5 g/plant TSP + 5 g/plant MoP) of N, P, and K.","PeriodicalId":17224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Bangladesh Agricultural University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135798880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were collected via face-to-face interviews between December 2020 and June 2021 from 301 randomly selected farmers from three districts in Bangladesh. Foot and Mouth (FMD) was the predominant disease in the study cattle. About 45% of cattle in Dhaka and 40% of cattle in Rajshahi were infected with FMD while Diarrhea (33%) and bloat (33%) were most prevalent in cattle from Sirajganj. Although the majority of respondents practiced regular vaccination and deworming for cattle, they had significantly less knowledge of vaccination and deworming. Moreover, there is a significant difference in regular practice and knowledge of farmers about vaccination among our study areas (p<0.007). FMD vaccine use was significantly higher among farmers of Dhaka (p<0.016) while the use of Black quarter (p<0.003) and Hemorrhagic septicemia (p<0.001) vaccines were significantly higher among farmers of Rajshahi. Most of the respondents provided prophylactic care by themselves or with the help of quacks while dependent on quacks or registered veterinarians for treatment. Half of the farmers faced various problems in health care management including the high prevalence of diseases (60%). Fifty-two percent of subjects from Dhaka had received different training such as cattle rearing and animal health and 84% of them implemented received training. The results of this study demonstrated that more awareness and training are needed regarding healthcare management and technology adoption in developing countries like Bangladesh for obtaining sustainable livestock production.","PeriodicalId":17224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Bangladesh Agricultural University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135799078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Personal interview technique was used to collect the data on solar and non-solar based boro rice farmers in the selected areas of Rangpur and Bogura district. Randomly eighty households (where forty of solar irrigation users and remaining forty of non solar users) were interviewed. Cobb-Douglas production function and descriptive statistics were used to explore the relationship between inputs and output. The major findings of the study are that socio-economic characteristics of small, medium and large farmers were different from each other in respect of age, literacy rate, farm size, and occupation, livestock ownership status, household income and expenditure. The Cobb-Douglas production found that, the solar irrigation cost, seed cost, harvesting cost and transportation cost have significant effect on solar irrigation based boro rice production and seed cost, labour cost, harvesting cost, transportation cost have significant effect on non-solar irrigation based boro rice production. Net Return and BCR for solar based per hectare rice production in Rangpur and Bogura were Tk 28580.66, Tk 21943.71 and 1.49, 1.46 respectively and for non solar based per hectare rice production in Rangpur and Bogura were Tk. 27745.40, Tk 22144.64 and 1.46, 1.43 respectively. Thus, solar practice is relatively more profitable. It suggested that the renewable based solar irrigation is assisting on sustainable crop production and also study found that it is economically viable, socially accepted and environmentally friendly.","PeriodicalId":17224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Bangladesh Agricultural University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135839419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This assay was performed with a view to examining the ecological effect of nutrient managements on plankton community in pond with four treatments having three replications; T0 was control without feed and fertilizer, T1 with only fertilizer, T2 with fertilizer and feed and T3 with only feed. Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fry was stocked and fed initially at 50% of body weight in T3 and gradually reduced to 5%. Feed in T2 was half of treatment T3; fertilization was done weekly. In the study, four phytoplankton groups were identified: Chlorophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, and Euglenophyceae, along with four zooplankton groups: Rotifera, Copepoda, Cladocera, and Crustacea. The most dominant phytoplankton and zooplankton groups were found as Chlorophyceae and Rotifera, respectively. The treatments showed significant difference (P <0.05) in plankton, notably between T2 and T0. The mean plankton abundance was highest in treatment T2. Findings indicated that application of both fertilizers and feed was better for plankton population growth than other treatments. So, the study could recommend that combined application of fertilizers and supplemental feed as the best option for semi-intensive fish farming.","PeriodicalId":17224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Bangladesh Agricultural University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135799082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: Potato peel can be a cheap and available source of preservatives as it is considered a waste after processing its tuber. Methods: We evaluated the serine protease inhibitory activity, antibacterial activity by Disc diffusion assay, and antioxidant properties by DPPH free radical scavenging assay and Ferric-ion reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP) of crude methanol and aqueous extract of potato peel. In addition, Total phenol, flavonoid, and tannin content were also quantified in both crude extracts. Results: Crude methanol extract was found more potential to have significant serine protease inhibition activity (IC50 = 534.87 μg/mL), DPPH free radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 183.56 μg/mL), and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) value of 351.81 µM Fe(II)/100µg of dried extract. Moreover, the total phenol, flavonoid and tannin content of the methanol extract were higher than the aqueous extract. Also, crude methanol extract showed maximum zone of inhibition (ZOI) against Vibrio cholera and Salmonella typhi (13.63 ± 0.53 and 13.25 ± 0.35 mm respectively). Later, column chromatography for the enrichment of total flavonoid content of methanol fractions exhibited elevated flavonoid content and serine protease inhibitory activity than crude methanol extract. Conclusion: This study showed, the methanol extract of potato peel is more potential than water extract.","PeriodicalId":17224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Bangladesh Agricultural University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135799085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this growing problem, a potential solution is to shift from cultivating water-intensive crops to less water-demanding crops like chickpeas in water-scarce areas, which could prove to be an effective strategy. With this view, a 3-year long (from 2015 to 2018) experience was done in two different locations (Gazipur and Rajshahi) to investigate the response of irrigation to the growth, yield, and water use of chickpeas. There were four treatments (each has three replications), namely, T1 = rainfed, T2 = one irrigation at post-sowing (20-22 days after sowing (DAS)), T3 = one irrigation at pod development (80-85 DAS) stage, and T4 = two irrigations each at post-sowing and pod development stages. The results showed that relying solely on rainfall was insufficient for satisfactory chickpea yield in Gazipur, emphasizing the need for irrigation. Conversely, if Rajshahi receives ample rainfall, there might not be a requirement for irrigation. Applying irrigation twice (at the post-sowing and pod-filling stage) in Gazipur and once (at the pod-filling stage) in Rajshahi, along with approximately 82.45 mm of irrigation in Gazipur and 75.94 mm in Rajshahi, resulted in enhanced growth and yield of chickpeas. The study findings indicate that chickpeas can be effectively cultivated with no or minimum irrigation, thereby reducing the risks of water-table mining in drier parts of the country.","PeriodicalId":17224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of The Bangladesh Agricultural University","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135802046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A consecutive two year experiment was conducted during Rabi season 2019 and 2020 at Taltali and Amtali upazila, respectively of Barguna district Bangladesh to find out whether organic manure amendment and gypsum fertilizer can reduce salinity related degradation of soil and increase sweet gourd yield in coastal region of Bangladesh There were six treatments having control (no amendment), gypsum fertilizer, cowdung, poultry manure and the combination of gypsum fertilizer with cowdung and poultry manure. The design of the experiment was randomized complete block design with four replications. Every plot received recommended rate of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash fertilizer. The text crop was sweet gourd. Organic amendment significantly increase fruit yield of sweet gourd in saline soil. The performance of poultry manure was better than cowdung. The poultry manure, and poultry manure plus gypsum fertilizer produced fruit yield of 29.1 and 38.1 t ha, which is 67 and 119% higher over control treatment, respectively. The gypsum application had positive effect on fruit yield when it is applied with poultry manure. Application of organic manure increase soil moisture content, and reduce soil pH and electrical conductivity. Organic amendment with poultry manure is therefore recommended for sustainable yield of sweet gourd in saline soil, and reduces salinity related land degradation in coastal region of Bangladesh.
